Bombs Kill At Least 60 In Attacks In Uganda Capital During Today’s World Cup Finals | Updates

Bombers Kill at Least 50 (Including Foreigners) in Attacks in Uganda Capital By JOSH KRON Published: July 11, 2010 KAMPALA, Uganda — At least three bombs exploded Sunday in a synchronized attack on large gatherings of World Cup soccer fans watching the televised final on outdoor screens in this normally peaceful capital, turning a boisterous night of cheering into scenes of death and panic. The police and witnesses said more than 50 people were killed including some foreigners, among them at least one American. Marc Hofer/Associated Press Photo: A man attended to an injured woman after a bomb went off in a restaurant in Kampala’s Kabalagala district on Sunday. People carried an injured man at the Mulago Hospital in Kampala on Sunday. The bombs struck at 10:30 p.m. local time in the middle of the match between Spain and the Netherlands under way in South Africa, hitting a popular Ethiopian garden restaurant and a large rugby field in a different Kampala neighborhood where hundreds of people had massed to watch the game. Ugandan police officials said they suspected that the Shabab, a militant Islamic group in nearby Somalia, might have been behind the bombings. If so, it would be that group’s first attack outside Somalia. But the police said it was premature to draw conclusions. “We can’t rule anything out,” said Kale Kayihura, Uganda’s police inspector general, at the scene of one of the attacks. “This was obviously terrorism, from the way it was targeted at World Cup watchers in public places.” Joan Lockard, a spokeswoman at the American Embassy in Kampala, confirmed that at least one American was killed. She did not identify the victim. Local journalists at a major hospital said an unidentified number of American citizens were among the wounded. The Shabab group, one of the more fearsome militias vying for power in Somalia, bans music, dancing and sports, has links to Al Qaeda and has repeatedly threatened targets in Uganda as well as in Burundi because both countries contribute to the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, a lawless nation in the Horn of Africa. The police said other suspects were former rebels in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo with connections to Uganda. The Ugandan capital is relatively safe and relaxed compared with other big cities in Africa, and such bombings are extremely rare. But the city turned tense and fearful early on Monday, as military vehicles and ambulances screeched through the streets and Kampala’s bars and discos emptied. At the Ethiopian restaurant that was attacked, an outdoor cafe with lawn tables known as the Ethiopian Village, soldiers and onlookers watched side by side as rescue crews extracted the dead and the wounded from the wreckage. The police said the bomb appeared to have been placed under a dining table where a group of foreigners, including some Americans, had been sitting. At least 15 people were killed in that blast, police officials witnesses said. “It was so loud,” said a woman named Mami, one of the owners of the restaurant, which had become popular with soccer fans because it showed the games on an outdoor screen. “I am so confused. My God. My God. My God.” At the rugby field where fans had gone to watch the final game on a large screen, police and witnesses said they counted at least 44 bodies. Lines of chairs had been blown apart. One middle-aged woman sat dead, her head hung back, blood dripping. “We were just watching football when the two bombs went off,” said Brian Bomakech, a Ugandan fan at the field. “So many people were hurt, so many people have died.” In Mogadishu, the Somalian capital, Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa, a Shabab commander, was quoted by The Associated Press early Monday as saying he was happy with the attacks in Uganda. The sheik refused to confirm or deny any responsibility by the Shabab. “Uganda is one of our enemies,” The A.P. quoted him as saying. “Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah’s anger be upon those who are against us.” The bombings came two days after another Shabab commander, Sheik Muktar Robow, called during Friday Prayer in Somalia for militants to attack sites in Uganda and Burundi. In Washington, a White House spokesman, Tommy Vietor, said late Sunday that the United States was prepared to provide assistance to Uganda. “The president is deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks, and sends his condolences to the people of Uganda and the loved ones of those who have been killed or injured,” he said. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/07/12/world/12uganda1/12uganda1-hpMediu… added by: EthicalVegan

Experimental Airplane Goes Mach 6!

The X-51A WaveRider is an unmanned U.S. Air Force experimental aircraft capable of reaching hypersonic speeds (specifically, six times the speed of sound, or 4000 miles per hour) using new scramjet engine technology. Test flights began in December 2009 and continue today. – Design – The end of the Cold War and the transition from manned spyplanes like the U-2 and the SR-71 Blackbird to satellite surveillance and unmanned, remote-operated spyplanes somewhat reduced the military's long-lived desire to develop a hypersonic high-altitude aircraft. Nevertheless, the air force did begin to fund the studies that led to the X-51 in the 1990s, taking advantage of NASA's own hypersonic research on previous prototypes like the X-43. To reach its extremely high velocities, the X-51 takes advantage of a new jet propulsion technology known as the scramjet. Previous high-speed aircraft, like the SR-71 Blackbird, used ramjets, which were once the speed kings of the jet world. However, within a ramjet engine, the air actually slows down to subsonic speeds, is then combusted with jet fuel and accelerated back to supersonic speeds, and finally used to propel the aircraft forward. A scramjet design allows the engine to burn fuel without slowing down the air as it enters the engine. Ramjet-powered aircraft never exceeded a few times the speed of sound, but this innovation means that future scramjet aircraft will travel several times as fast, perhaps even Mach 20 or more. added by: Armageddon_Now

BREAKING NEWS:Bombs Strike World Cup Watchers In Uganda, Kill 64

KAMPALA, Uganda — In simultaneous bombings bearing the hallmarks of international terrorists, two explosions ripped through crowds watching the World Cup final in two places in Uganda's capital late Sunday, killing 64 people, police said. One American was killed and several were wounded. The deadliest attack occurred at a rugby club as people watched the game between Spain and the Netherlands on a large-screen TV outdoors. The second blast took place at an Ethiopian restaurant, where at least three Americans were wounded. One American was killed in the blasts, said Joann Lockard, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Kampala. Kampala's police chief said he believed Somalia's most feared militant group, al-Shabab, could be responsible for the attack. Al-Shabab is known to have links with al-Qaida, and it counts militant veterans from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan conflicts among its ranks. A head and legs were found at the rugby club, suggesting a suicide bomber may have been to blame, an AP reporter at the scene said. At least three Americans – part of a church group from Pennsylvania – were wounded at the Ethiopian restaurant. One was Kris Sledge, 18, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. “I remember blacking out, hearing people screaming and running,” Sledge said from the hospital. His right leg was wrapped and he had burns on his face. “I love the place here but I'm wondering why this happened and who did this … At this point we're just glad to be alive.” At the scenes of the two blasts, blood and pieces of flesh littered the floor among overturned chairs. Police Chief Kale Kaihura originally said at least 30 people had been killed, though the toll could be higher. Later, a senior police official at the scene said that 64 people had been killed – 49 from the rugby club and 15 at the Ethiopian restaurant. The official said he could not be identified. Kaihura said he suspected al-Shabab, that country's most hardline militant group. Its fighters, including two recruited from the Somali communities in the United States, have carried out multiple suicide bombings in Somalia. If Kaihura's suspicions that al-Shabab was responsible for the Uganda bombings prove true, it would be the first time the group has carried out attacks outside of Somalia. added by: keithponder

Gulf Coast Must Act Now! Community meeting with Dr. Riki Ott and Dr. Steven Picou

Dr. Steven Picou, Professor of Sociology at University of South Alabama and Dr. Riki Ott, marine toxicologist and foremost authority of the Exxon Valdez disaster spoke to a group of people from Mobile and Baldwin Counties at Alabama Delta Resource Center. An interesting and almost unbelievable note is that Riki Ott and Steven Picou became close friends after the Exxon Valdez incident. Dr. Picou left Mobile and spent a lot of time in Alaska conducting research about the social impact the oil spill had on residents. Riki Ott said, “Steven was there to help my people, and now I’ve come to help his people.” Such is a bitter-sweet twist of fate. Dr. Picou opened the meeting by speaking about what we can expect from the social impact, and how the cleanup efforts will be more destructive than the oil spill itself. He referred to PTSD — Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He and Dr. Ott agreed that the BP disaster is the Exxon Valdez in fast forward mode, that everything is unfolding at a much faster rate. In Alaska, the first suicide took place 4 years after the spill. The Gulf Coast experienced its first suicide (the charter boat captain at Gulf Shores, AL) on Day 65. Dr. Picou diagrammed how the loss of social capital emerges into a corrosive community. We have already witnessed the loss of trust in BP, and then the loss of trust in the federal government, then it dribbled down to the state government. (The newspapers and media are quoting leaders on the local government level as having lost trust in the state government.) When the only trust in government the community retains is for government at the local level, Dr. Picou warned that, too, will soon fade (and it already is). This downward spiral will continue until citizens turn against other citizens, then family members against each other. (Already, in the last 4 weeks, the hard-hit fishing community of Bayou La Batre, AL has witnessed a 50% crime rate increase.) Not only in Bayou La Batre, but everywhere that is directly affected, we’re seeing what some are calling the “spillionaires” and what one member in the audience called the “BP Whores.” In other words, BP picks and chooses who will work for them. One unemployed fishermen gets to participate in the Vessels of Opportunity program (skimming, laying boom, etc.) while his/her neighbor’s boat sits idle, and the owner faces bankruptcy in less than a handful of months. (Note from Jen: I spoke with an occupational safety expert who worked Exxon Valdez. He told me that Exxon placed “moles” in the community there to find the families who were feuding with each other, and then stoked the flames by hiring from one family and not the other. BP is doing the same. They are pitting us against each other because as long as they can keep us fighting amongst ourselves, we cannot see clearly enough to unite and fight with them. DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO CONTINUE. SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING AND CHANGE IT!) “This is not a 100-meter dash we’re running. This is a marathon. And we haven’t even run the first lap, yet.” Riki Ott describes the oil as an amoeba — it’s constantly moving, yawning, stretching, growing. It’s an evolving monster and we are under siege by it. “The Exxon Valdez incident directly impacted the lives of 22,000 people. The BP Oil Spill will directly impact the lives of 30 million people.” Dr. Ott — “When BP says that we will make you whole again, what they are really saying is that we’ll see you in court.” Nineteen years after the Exxon Valdez, Exxon ended up paying 10 cents on the dollar for every claim filed. The law that is written holding oil companies responsible does not include: devaluation of property, or symptoms that are related to cold, cough or flu. This is the loop-hole that will get BP out of this. The toxins will attack our respiratory tracts, leaving long-term damage, yet because “cough” is excluded, BP will end up having to pay very few medical claims. Dr. Ott said that we are in a democracy crisis, that she thought it was bad during the Exxon Valdez, that Exxon was aggressive and the U.S. government was passive, but what she is seeing here is much worse. BP is much more aggressive than Exxon ever was in that it is calling all the shots in the clean-up effort and has seized control of the media and censorship, even down to seizing control of no-fly zones. She said that if the U.S. government was passive during the Exxon Valdez, they are, for all intents and purposes, non-existent during the Gulf crisis. She said that one EPA whistle-blower had once stated that the South was the region of the country to which EPA formulated one extreme end of the spectrum for its “tolerance” test, i.e. how much people would take before they began to scream in protest. She said that Southerners are known to be more docile, accepting and respectful of authority, that it’s the way we’re raised — a part of the “southern hospitality” package. With a twinkle in her eye, Dr. Ott said, “But just what if the South were to rise again!” She came to the Gulf Coast May 3. What she witnessed caused even her to relapse into post-traumatic stress syndrome. She had to get away, if only for a few days. Memorial Day weekend she decided to fly back home to Alaska for a few days. She got as far as Seattle airport, turned around and came back. She knows what it is like, and for the time being, she isn’t leaving us. Synthetic Marijuana Spurs State Bans

Seated at a hookah lounge in the Tower Grove district, Albert Kuo trained his lighter above a marbleized glass pipe stuffed with synthetic marijuana. Inhaling deeply, Mr. Kuo, an art student at an area college, singed the pipe’s leafy contents, emitting a musky cloud of smoke into the afternoon light. Mr. Kuo, 25, had gathered here with a small cohort of friends for what could be the last time they legally get high in Missouri on a substance known popularly as K2, a blend of herbs treated with synthetic marijuana. “I know it’s not going to kill me,” said Mr. Kuo, who likened the drug’s effects to clove cigarettes. “It’s a waste of time, effort and money to ban something like this.” On Tuesday, Gov. Jay Nixon, a Democrat, signed a bill prohibiting possession of K2. Missouri is the nation’s eighth state this year to ban the substance, which has sent users to emergency rooms across the country complaining of everything from elevated heart rates and paranoia to vomiting and hallucinations. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/11/us/11k2.html?_r=1&ref=politics added by: unimatrix0

Obama Administration Protected Black Panther Who Advocates Killing "Cracker" Babies

A former Justice Department lawyer hired during the Bush administration alleged on Tuesday that the department scaled down a voter-intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party last year because his former colleagues do not want to protect white people’s civil rights. The case arose after two members of the New Black Panther Party stood outside a polling place in a majority-black precinct in Philadelphia on Election Day in 2008. A video of the men, posted online, showed them dressed in paramilitary clothing, and one carried a billy club. In January 2009, less than two weeks before the Bush administration left office, the civil rights division invoked a rarely used section of the Voting Rights Act to file a civil lawsuit alleging voter intimidation by both men, the party chairman and the party. In April 2009, the division seemed to win the case by default because the New Black Panthers failed to show up in court. But the following month, a longtime Justice official, Loretta King — who was then the acting head of the division — decided to reduce the scope of the case. The department dropped the charges against the party, its chairman and the man who was not carrying a club. It pressed forward with the lawsuit against the man with the club, obtaining an injunction that forbids him from carrying a weapon near an open polling place in Philadelphia through 2012. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN67KJdd6Mw added by: ibrake4rappers13
