Wanda Orme Almost Interesting Self Portraits of the Day

Wanda Orme is some self proclaimed artist, rich kid, from the UK who moved to LA to go to school and to develop her art with more of an intellectual approach.. You know, if you take your slutty photos without a Master’s Degree in Sociology, can you even consider what you do a contribution to the world…of course you can’t…it’s just shameless… But when you can apply bullshit collegiate theories to your half nudes, about the plight of man and gender and all that other shit we don’t care about cuz we just want to see the tits….it becomes pretty fucking pretentious…. It’s like she took the long and convoluted road to taking shameless pics of herself….because sometimes it takes a bitch some time to get her feet wet or to convince herself that what she is doing is more important than it actually is. I almost ALMOST…i repeat ALMOST like these pics, but there’s something missing…I am not buying her angle….her cropped out face, look at her body….nonsense…. But maybe I just can’t accept someone calling themselves an artist. I like to think that is something that OTHER people call you…and not just vapid idiots who want to seem important, in a childish bullshit way….like “Oh I’m an artist, you’re an artist, I’m a model, you’re a writer, I’m a film maker, you’re a musician”…when you’re all jsut a bunch of rich kids in a loft acting important…The “I’m a Filmmaker” line fucking kills me…especially now when everything is digital and all you do is edit on some software clips you shot on your iphone….clown. I like when society as a whole embraces what you do…and not because you tell them what you do….over and over and over….Don’t tell me what you are, I’ll tell you what you are…cuz that’s how REAL society works. Our History Makers: W.E.B. Du Bois

Visit link:

W. E. B. Du Bois , the African American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, and editor, is most known for his pursuit of social justice and literary imagination. One of the best African American writers to date, Du Bois published over 1,000 essays and writings, some standing the test of over 100 years and still used in classrooms today. Click Here To Read W. E. B. Du Bois Bio Below is a list of the most influential writings of W. E. B. Du Bois. Feel free to add to the list below by adding your comment. 1. The Souls of Black Folk Said to be W. E. B. Du Bois’ most influential piece of writing, this classic piece of American Literature by W. E. B. Du Bois changed the perspective on African American writers, as well as the horrible social life for blacks in the early 1900′s. The Souls of Black Folk also holds an important place in social science as one of the early works to deal with sociology. 2. The Philadelphia Negro In 1897 W. E. B. Du Bois worked as the Assistant in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he conducted a social experiment of the Negro community in Philadelphia. His publication that would soon follow his experiment would turn out to be one or the greatest writings on the “Negro” in America. Du Bois gathered information by traveling house to house and conducted personal interviews with each individual head of household. 3. The Negro This non-fiction writing was the first comprehensive history of African and African-derived people, from their early cultures through the period of the slave trade and into the twentieth century. Published in 1915, this book influenced both white and black communities of its time, bringing a better awareness to the plight of the African American. This book was also highly instrumental in helping to inspire generations of people to see things from an African perspective. 4. The Talented Tenth , second chapter of The Negro Problem , a collection of articles by African Americans The talented Tenth is a term that was created by W. E. B. Du Bois to give name to a group of African Americans who had the distinct duty of lifting African Americans from poverty and discrimination to a middle class standard. Du Bois used the term “the talented tenth” to describe the likelihood of one in ten black men becoming leaders of their race in the world, through methods such as continuing their education, writing books, or becoming directly involved in social change. He believed that this was the only way for African Americans to strive in an environment that was set up for failure in the black community. Men we shall have only as we make manhood the object of the work of the schools — intelligence, broad sympathy, knowledge of the world that was and is, and of the relation of men to it — this is the curriculum of that Higher Education which must underlie true life. On this foundation we may build bread winning, skill of hand and quickness of brain, with never a fear lest the child and man mistake the means of living for the object of life. 5. Black Reconstruction in America Published in 1935, Black Reconstruction In America took an in-depth look at the Reconstruction of the south after its defeat in the American civil war. Du Bois’ basic argument was one of rich vs. poor and how Black and White laborers, who are the proletariat, were divided after the civil war on the lines of race, and as such were unable to stand together against the white propertied class, the bourgeoisie. Du Bois stated this was the reason for the rise of Jim Crow Laws and the failure of reconstruction. What makes this book so important is how relevant it is when you look at the problems in today’s society.

Gulf Coast Must Act Now! Community meeting with Dr. Riki Ott and Dr. Steven Picou

Dr. Steven Picou, Professor of Sociology at University of South Alabama and Dr. Riki Ott, marine toxicologist and foremost authority of the Exxon Valdez disaster spoke to a group of people from Mobile and Baldwin Counties at Alabama Delta Resource Center. An interesting and almost unbelievable note is that Riki Ott and Steven Picou became close friends after the Exxon Valdez incident. Dr. Picou left Mobile and spent a lot of time in Alaska conducting research about the social impact the oil spill had on residents. Riki Ott said, “Steven was there to help my people, and now I’ve come to help his people.” Such is a bitter-sweet twist of fate. Dr. Picou opened the meeting by speaking about what we can expect from the social impact, and how the cleanup efforts will be more destructive than the oil spill itself. He referred to PTSD — Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He and Dr. Ott agreed that the BP disaster is the Exxon Valdez in fast forward mode, that everything is unfolding at a much faster rate. In Alaska, the first suicide took place 4 years after the spill. The Gulf Coast experienced its first suicide (the charter boat captain at Gulf Shores, AL) on Day 65. Dr. Picou diagrammed how the loss of social capital emerges into a corrosive community. We have already witnessed the loss of trust in BP, and then the loss of trust in the federal government, then it dribbled down to the state government. (The newspapers and media are quoting leaders on the local government level as having lost trust in the state government.) When the only trust in government the community retains is for government at the local level, Dr. Picou warned that, too, will soon fade (and it already is). This downward spiral will continue until citizens turn against other citizens, then family members against each other. (Already, in the last 4 weeks, the hard-hit fishing community of Bayou La Batre, AL has witnessed a 50% crime rate increase.) Not only in Bayou La Batre, but everywhere that is directly affected, we’re seeing what some are calling the “spillionaires” and what one member in the audience called the “BP Whores.” In other words, BP picks and chooses who will work for them. One unemployed fishermen gets to participate in the Vessels of Opportunity program (skimming, laying boom, etc.) while his/her neighbor’s boat sits idle, and the owner faces bankruptcy in less than a handful of months. (Note from Jen: I spoke with an occupational safety expert who worked Exxon Valdez. He told me that Exxon placed “moles” in the community there to find the families who were feuding with each other, and then stoked the flames by hiring from one family and not the other. BP is doing the same. They are pitting us against each other because as long as they can keep us fighting amongst ourselves, we cannot see clearly enough to unite and fight with them. DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO CONTINUE. SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING AND CHANGE IT!) “This is not a 100-meter dash we’re running. This is a marathon. And we haven’t even run the first lap, yet.” Riki Ott describes the oil as an amoeba — it’s constantly moving, yawning, stretching, growing. It’s an evolving monster and we are under siege by it. “The Exxon Valdez incident directly impacted the lives of 22,000 people. The BP Oil Spill will directly impact the lives of 30 million people.” Dr. Ott — “When BP says that we will make you whole again, what they are really saying is that we’ll see you in court.” Nineteen years after the Exxon Valdez, Exxon ended up paying 10 cents on the dollar for every claim filed. The law that is written holding oil companies responsible does not include: devaluation of property, or symptoms that are related to cold, cough or flu. This is the loop-hole that will get BP out of this. The toxins will attack our respiratory tracts, leaving long-term damage, yet because “cough” is excluded, BP will end up having to pay very few medical claims. Dr. Ott said that we are in a democracy crisis, that she thought it was bad during the Exxon Valdez, that Exxon was aggressive and the U.S. government was passive, but what she is seeing here is much worse. BP is much more aggressive than Exxon ever was in that it is calling all the shots in the clean-up effort and has seized control of the media and censorship, even down to seizing control of no-fly zones. She said that if the U.S. government was passive during the Exxon Valdez, they are, for all intents and purposes, non-existent during the Gulf crisis. She said that one EPA whistle-blower had once stated that the South was the region of the country to which EPA formulated one extreme end of the spectrum for its “tolerance” test, i.e. how much people would take before they began to scream in protest. She said that Southerners are known to be more docile, accepting and respectful of authority, that it’s the way we’re raised — a part of the “southern hospitality” package. With a twinkle in her eye, Dr. Ott said, “But just what if the South were to rise again!” She came to the Gulf Coast May 3. What she witnessed caused even her to relapse into post-traumatic stress syndrome. She had to get away, if only for a few days. Memorial Day weekend she decided to fly back home to Alaska for a few days. She got as far as Seattle airport, turned around and came back. She knows what it is like, and for the time being, she isn’t leaving us. Trey Songz’s Mom Makes Splash At BET Awards

Singer brought April Tucker onstage with him when he accepted the award for Best Male R&B Artist. By Hillary Crosley Trey Songz at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Though Prince received the biggest honor of the BET Awards with a Lifetime Achievement tribute, Trey Songz ‘s mother was the belle of the ball. Joining her son as his date, Ms. Songz made quite an impression on the show’s younger audience, so much that she earned #1 on Google’s trending topics. Born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia, April Tucker gave birth to Trey, born Tremaine Neverson, at the age of seventeen. Living on welfare and in Section 8 housing, Tucker enrolled in Virginia State University and graduated six years later, earning a degree in Sociology with a minor in Administration of Justice. Serving as a juvenile probation officer in Baltimore, Maryland, and a resource specialist in several Maryland counties, Tucker grew interested in helping children. Following her then husband, who was a military man, to Junction City, Kansas, Ms. Tucker became a program manager for Big Brothers and Big Sisters there and helped children at risk. Despite her relocations to Baltimore and middle America, Tucker decided that Trey would have a better childhood with her parents back in Virginia, where he began singing in church. Now that her son Trey is a wildly popular R&B singer, Tucker and her firstborn (Trey has a younger brother named Forrest) make a point of doing charitable work. In the past, the two have given clothing donations and turkeys during Thanksgiving to Petersburg’s needy. Despite their distance, Trey and his mother are very close, and she describes him as “a regular guy with a God-given voice and talent for writing.” Responding in kind, the singer’s tattoo on his chest describes his adoration for his mother. “To God I pray may April’s showers rain on her Forrest,” reads the tattoo. “And grow the strength that started with one Rose.” Earlier in the evening, the Virginia native won the award for Best Male R&B Artist and brought his extremely good-looking mother onto the stage with him to accept his trophy. Following tonight’s show, BET will debut Trey’s documentary, “My Moment,” which follows the singer during the recent Blueprint 3 tour with Jay-Z across America. What Type of Nerd Are You? [Sociology]

All the nerds are in one place this week at SXSW, but, let’s face it, we all have a little bit of nerd in us. These days geekdom is large and diverse enough for everyone. Where do you fit in? There are certain things that all geeks have in common: an intense interest in a very specialized field, fervent enthusiasm for a set of hobbies, a group of other people who share their obsessions, and probably a little bit of social awkwardness. Sure, there are people who fit these stereotypes exactly, but there are enough permutations and substrata of each of these categories that there has to be some leeway. And some people combine traits and interests from a number of these worlds into one big ball of übernerd. But deep down inside, you know which way your dilithium crystal crumbles. Embrace it! Enjoy it! Nerds have already taken over Hollywood. One day they’ll conquer the globe! Sci-Fi Geek Description : The most influential of the bunch when it comes to pop culture, this group has pretty much taken over the entertainment business. They love anything related to comic books, superheros, galaxies far far away, fantasy worlds, alien invasions, or Sigourney Weaver in space. Without them, blockbusters wouldn’t have monster opening weekends, Fringe would have no viewers, and Batman would have no fans. Not only do they obsessively collect the books, DVDs, and figurines related to their favorite titles, the often dress up in their costumes in the hopes of becoming the characters themselves. Substrata : Comic Nerds, Trekkers, LAIR revelers Gathering Place : San Diego Comic Con Knows Way Too Much Useless Information About : The life and many deaths of Jean Grey Eagerly Anticipating : Iron Man 2 Tech Nerds Description : These are the power players in the business world because they have the most money. This is the guy who needs the latest gadget, can configure your computer in a snap, and actually bothers to read the instruction manual that comes with a digital camera. He probably has at least a little knowledge of computer programming, optimizes his web browser to do absolutely everything for him but fix his fancy coffee, and could probably take over the whole world with nothing but an iPhone and a maniacal laugh. Whether he’s a Mac or a PC, he is all nerd. Mad Scientists Description : You can’t mess with the original. These are the chemists, engineers, physicists and other general crazies who are more comfortable in the controlled confines of the lab than in the messy, messy real world. However, they are responsible for the food we eat, the cars we drive, and the drugs we take—even sometimes the illegal ones. Without them, we’d still be using stone wheels and struggling to start a campfire with a flint. They are our saviors, but total bores at dinner parties. Rather than just being a hipster into the newest and hottest bands and changing their tastes according to the zeitgeist, this person is also a fiendish collector of a certain genre of music. Whether it’s late American bluegrass, German opera, early East Coast hip-hop, or Baltimore booty house, they have a finely tuned and exhaustive collection and scoff at anyone who never heard of whichever undiscovered “genius” they’re researching. He has been in more legislative bodies than female ones, and knows all the key players in all of them. There is not one minute detail of parliamentary procedure, voting district, or legislative record that he has overlooked. He lunches with lobbyists, suppers with strategists, and drinks with demagogues. They keep Meet the Press in business and fall asleep with the CNN crawl running through their little heads. They play interactive Halo with strangers online, twist and twirl Mario on screen until their retinas bleed, and engage in strange Pokemon battles on our roof. They have a special place in their entertainment console for their Playstation, Wii, XBox, Game Cube, Classic NES, rescued Sega Genesis, and thrift store Atari. When not in front of a TV they play on hand-held devices in the car and on the subway. No, video games aren’t just for kids anymore. The kids grew up and became nerds. He’s too nerdy for mainstream gay culture and too gay for mainstream nerd culture, so he is all alone except for the other lost souls he meets over the internet who share an interest in the games, comics, slashfic, and other goodies created just for them. There are some nerdy categories specific to gay culture, but many homosexuals have an affinity for sci-fi. He has minute statistics memorized, he dresses funny for special events, he probably hasn’t scored in a long time, and he doesn’t engage in the thing that he loves most in the world. The wins and losses of his favorite team mean more to him than anything and can affect his mood for days. More than just a casual viewer, don’t dare ask this guy, “How about them Yankees?” unless you want to hear a rant about how the managerial Kremlinology of the team has adversely affected ERAs, RBIs, and designated hitters in alternating away games. Substrata : Football fanatics, Statistics junkies, Cheeseheads Gathering Place : Tailgate parties Knows Way Too Much Useless Information About : Fantasy sports league drafting Eagerly Anticipating : Opening day of Major League Baseball
