Barack Obama Gives Seal of Disapproval to Americans For Prosperity

President Obama spoke on August 9th to the Democratic National Committee in Austin, Texas. Interesting enough, the people of the United States paid for this political fund raising trip. President Obama couldn't restrain himself from taking pot shots at the American people. His speech is available on the White House website at least for hopefully a few more days. One of the organizations that Mr. Obama disparaged was Americans For Prosperity. Mr. Obama said: Right now all around this country there are groups with harmless-sounding names like Americans for Prosperity, who are running millions of dollars of ads against Democratic candidates all across the country. And they don't have to say who exactly the Americans for Prosperity are. You don't know if it’s a foreign-controlled corporation. You don't know if it’s a big oil company, or a big bank. You don't know if it’s a insurance company that wants to see some of the provisions in health reform repealed because it’s good for their bottom line, even if it’s not good for the American people. A Supreme Court decision allowed this to happen. And we tried to fix it, just by saying disclose what’s going on, and making sure that foreign companies can’t influence our elections. Seemed pretty straightforward. The other side said no. They don't want you to know who the Americans for Prosperity are, because they're thinking about the next election. But we’ve got to think about future generations. We’ve got to make sure that we’re fighting for reform. We’ve got to make sure that we don't have a corporate takeover of our democracy. added by: congoboy

Open Thread: Liberals’ Ingenious Plan to Sink the Tea Party

That’s pretty much it. It’s the new campaign from Erica Payne, who according to CBS is a “former Democratic National Committee official who has founded other organizations like the Democracy Alliance, a group of liberal donors whose partners have invested over $100 million in progressive organizations.” Payne aims “to dismiss the Tea Party and promote the progressive cause” by…making t-shirts and mocking the movement through poorly-made videos. In other words, it’s the ultimate in astroturf. What does this new tactic mean for the Tea Party movement? Does it mean anything?

New Attempt at Civil Discourse From the Left: ‘F*ck Tea’

A “progressive” political activism campaign has launched a new project apparently aimed at engaging opponents in civil discourse about important issues of the day. Their motto: “F*ck Tea.” Setting its sights on the Tea Party movement, the Agenda Project has launched an online store to sell shirts and mugs with the slogan and inform visitors of some statistics about the Tea Parties – none of which are sourced. On its own website , the Agenda Project claims its goal is “to build a powerful, intelligent, well-connected political movement capable of identifying and advancing rational, effective ideas in the public debate and in so doing ensure our country’s enduring success.” “Our goal is to return normal Americans to the center of the policy debate by cultivating an understanding of public policy, facilitating common action, and connecting the best ideas and the strongest leaders with engaged citizens, elected officials, the media, political insiders, and experts through a variety of in-person and on-line platforms,” the group says. Apparently that didn’t fit on a t-shirt. Politico reports that the Agenda Project was founded by Erica Payne, who also helped establish the Democracy Alliance and the Center for American Progress, a left-wing think tank.

What Is Going On in Iran, Then?

You were maybe too busy opening presents or seeing It’s Complicated and eating Chinese food to read Andrew Sullivan this weekend, but you have probably heard that something is up in Iran. Andrew Sullivan’s Daily Dish covered the events in real time , and today’s New York Times has a very good piece on what went down on Sunday.

In Defense of Throwing Tomatoes at Sarah Palin

Since we opened up that can of stewed pears by praising the guy who threw tomatoes at Sarah Palin , we figured it’s a good time to explain why it was cool that he did that. In other words: Food fight ! Here are the reasons (besides the obvious ones) that we think it was a good idea for Jeremy Paul Olson to throw food at Sarah Palin today during her Minnesota reading, for which he is currently incarcerated: Throwing food at people has a long, messy history The first recorded incident of throwing food at a public figure in history, according to our ten minutes of Googling, was in 60-something AD when Roman emperor Vespasianus Ceaser Augustus was “pelted with turnips” at a riot, most likely by people sick of having nothing to eat but turnips. In the 1770s, preacher John Crook was similarly assaulted when he tried to convert the heathens of the Isle of Man to Methodism
