T he hit late-80s sitcom A Different World was instrumental in shaping the narrative surrounding Black students and higher education. The cast of the show recently paid it forward by presenting a $100,000 check from Ford to an HBCU, Ebony reported. The Cast of 'A Different World' Discuss the Show's Cultural Impact https://t.co/MuzZcZkKaC #HBCU #HBCUnews — HBCU Lifestyle (@HBCU_Lifestyle) November 21, 2018 The check, which was a part of Ford’s Ultimate Homecoming Takeover initiative, was given to Southwestern Christian College in Texas, the news outlet writes. The initiative was launched as an avenue to empower Black students to further their education and strengthen programs at historically Black colleges and universities across the country. Amongst the cast members who presented the check were Cree Summer , Jasmine Guy , Darryl Bell , and Kadeem Hardison . The actors discussed the Black experience at colleges and universities throughout the country and spoke about the influence of their show. “I loved the diversity of the cast. Usually, actors are the Black person on a show [as in there’s only one type of black person] and it’s very hard to represent everything about Black people in one person,” said Guy, according to the news outlet. “We had different classes, different colorings, different backgrounds, different aspirations and that’s one thing I loved about A Different World . It showed the true spirit about what being Black is, and that it is diverse within itself.” Bell added that the show was powerful in sparking important conversations surrounding the Black community as the storylines addressed social and political issues. “No matter what topic was discussed, it wasn’t a monolithic response; it was something that was always challenging and relevant, it was important and we managed to be funny while we did it! That’s why I think it lasted so long and stayed evergreen,” he said. Several celebrities have shown their support for HBCUs this year. In July, Beyoncé awarded eight HBCU students with scholarships. T here are some concerns about the safety of Black students at the University of South Alabama after nooses were discovered Tuesday (September 25) hanging from a tree on campus. See Also: Michigan State University Has A Strange Response To A Racist Student The university released a statement on Wednesday notifying the college community that the campus police identified the student responsible for the incident. “A University of South Alabama student has been interimly suspended and banned from campus, pending a formal hearing, after confessing to an incident discovered last night outside the campus dining hall. USA Police have determined the student acted alone in hanging a bicycle and two nooses in a tree,” the statement said. Free counseling was offered to students, but it’s unclear what steps the university will take to ensure student safety. The local NAACP chapter noted in its statement that Mobile, where the campus is located, was the site of the last documented Ku Klux Klan lynching. “This is a rare and isolated incident, and from a safety standpoint the student responsible has been suspended and barred from campus until a formal disciplinary hearing can be held,” the university’s spokesman Bob Lowry told NewsOne . Prior to the president’s statement, the Mobile County chapter of the NAACP criticized the university for not immediately addressing the situation. “This is a circumstance that many of us feel needs immediate attention considering America’s history and Mobile’s history,” a statement from Jordan Harris , president of the chapter, said. Harris pointed out that members of the KKK were responsible for hanging 19-year-old Michael Donald in 1981 from a tree in Mobile. A cafeteria worker was also fired after posting an offensive tweet from the university’s dining hall account. “The rope outside of the caf last night was just a sign that our food is KILLER! Come get some fried chicken and tell us any different,” the tweet said. The worker was an employee of Aramark, which manages the dining facility, the university stated. Katie Couric asked Bey what she thought about Kelly’s loose lips during their interview on ABC’s “20/20,” and Beyonce didn’t seem upset about it at all. Beyonce playfully responded to Katie’s question by asking, “Did she?” And then placed her finger by her bottom lip and said, “Hmmm?” Beyonce also discussed directing her new concert DVD, pregnancy cravings, fake baby bump reaction from her family, parting ways with her father and former manager Mathew Knowles. Anthony Mackie ( The Night Catches Us, Million Dollar Baby ) and Lance Gross ( Our Family Wedding, House of Payne ) may or may not strike you as acting newcomers. But when you compare them to Laurence Fishburne and Denzel Washington, they’re definitely Hollywood babies. Samuel L. Jackson has been around since Spike Lee’s breakout films and Laurence Fishburne has been acting since 1975 playing Wilford Robinson in Cornbread, Earl and Me. We pay homage to the top Hollywood vets, who probably say to younger actors, :You know, back in my day…” 1. Laurence Fishburne Not only was he the famed kid in Cornbread, Earl and Me , but Laurence is still works regularly on television and movies. 2. Samuel L. Jackson He always plays the risky roles that other actors may find unbecoming, but he’s one of the highest paid actors–Black or White. 3. Glynn Turman From  Cooley High to A Different World , he’s definitely got his acting stripes! 4. Morgan Freeman He’s got a lot of flack for his role as Miss Daisy’s docile driver, but he’s been acting since the mid-60s and it’s hard not to distinguish his voice narrating commercials and movies. 5. Denzel Washington He was the first black actor to win an Oscar for leading male role; need we say more?!
