Irv Da Phenom Learns Rap’s Ropes From Tech N9ne

‘He heard my music and was like, ‘Man you’re supposed to be making music with us,’ ‘ Irv tells Mixtape Daily of his relationship with Tech. By Rob Markman Irv Da Phenom Photo: MTV News Fire Starter : Irv Da Phenom Essential Info : You get back what you put out. It’s a concept that Kansas City, Missouri, rapper Irv Da Phenom understands well. That’s why the up-and-coming rapper isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. Now, on his latest album, Who the F— Is Irv Da Phenom?, the Midwest MC looks to really define himself. “I’m just a young man from Wyandotte County, Kansas City, a hard worker [who] was gifted to do music,” Irv told Mixtape Daily in answer to the very question that his album title poses. “I’m just trying to provide my point of view through music and move people with it.” The self-proclaimed Phenom first got into music while singing in the church where his father was a deacon. As a child he wasn’t allowed to listen to rap music, but eventually, by the age of 13, he found hip-hop influences in Eminem, Busta Rhymes and his hometown hero Tech N9ne . Turns out that Irv would meet Tech as a teenager during a studio session and then years later end up touring with the Strange Music juggernaut. “As years went on, he seen me doing my thing around the town, rapping. And then I pop up at his shows,” he said of his relationship with Tecca Nina. “It just eventually grew and grew. I was blessed to be able to go out on tour with him. He heard my music one day and was like, ‘Man you’re supposed to be making music with us,’ and that’s how we ended up linking up.” Irv didn’t ink with Tech’s Strange Music but started his own independent label, Def Metal Gospel, through which he released his underground albums. If a rapper who flies a flag that draws inspiration from metal and gospel music sounds different to you, that’s cool, because that’s the way Irv intended it. “It’s already a Lil Wayne, it’s already a Young Jeezy, it’s already a Rick Ross, so why would I worry about fitting in to what they are?” Irv explained, instead choosing to be himself. “I just do what I know — somebody out there is just like me.” While on the road with Tech, Irv did pick up some great touring habits. For one, he learned the importance of a quality stage show. Standing center-stage and rapping just won’t cut it. Secondly, he saw the worth in going directly to his fans. Irv has more than 11,000 Twitter followers and a respectable digital presence, but he is best when he is face-to-face with his fans, selling physical CDs at meet-and-greets before his shows. “It’s real important to actually go reach the fans, go touch ’em and let them see you out and about,” he said. David Banner Drops Free Album Featuring Chris Brown, Lil Wayne

Rapper talks to Mixtape Daily about Sex, Drugs & Video Games ; LP out now as free download. By Rob Markman David Banner Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Album : David Banner’s Sex, Drugs & Video Games Key Cameo : “Amazing” (featuring Chris Brown) Essential Info : David Banner knows a thing or two about making hit records, and he promises that his latest album, Sex, Drugs & Video Games, will feature some pretty over-the-top music and some pretty notable guests as well. Chris Brown , Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg will all appear on the LP, which Banner is offering as a free online download on DatPiff.com . Sex, Drugs & Video Games, which dropped on Tuesday (May 22), is technically a free album, but Banner is accepting donations on his DavidBanner.com website to help artists exist outside of big corporations. “What I am trying to do is make the two most important parts of the musical equation … important again: That’s the artist and that’s the fans,” Banner told MTV News back in March of what he dubs the 2M1 Movement. “Corporate entities have made the artists and the fans feel like they’re not important, where without them, it all would fall.” Banner’s goals are progressive, and a good number of his LP’s collaborators operate and are successful within the major-label system. In theory DB’s distribution method could be a conflict of interest for some, but because of Banner’s relationships with the artists he works with, he doesn’t foresee any issues. “I don’t necessarily involve people in my politics. I would tell Chris all the time, Dude, I don’t necessarily want you to be connected with the things that I believe in, because I know there is a certain sacrifice with the things that I believe,” he said. “Only thing I tell people is the record is hot and it’s my album. … Whether I connect these songs to a movement or not, it doesn’t matter because if you strip the movement off of my album, it’s jammin’.” “Amazing,” Banner’s current club banger, features Chris Brown on the hook. Though the Mississippi rapper/producer is sending a message with this album, the song is just about having a good time. “Everybody that’s around me, that supports me, they know what I stand for, and then I think vicariously through me they’re actually able to express some of things that they may not want to express in their own career,” he said. What’s your favorite track off of David Banner’s new album? Let us know in the comments. For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Mike Posner Is ‘A Rapper Trapped In A Singer’s Body’

‘I got love and acceptance in that community, and that’s something that I really take seriously,’ Mike Posner tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Mike Posner Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Layover Key Cameo : “Rocket Man” (featuring Bun B) Essential Info : Mike Posner is in touch with his rap side. On his new mixtape The Layover, he enlists the help of noted spitters like Bun B, Big K.R.I.T., Twista, Slim Thug, Cyhi the Prynce and Machine Gun Kelly — not that the “Cooler Than Me” singer lacks hip-hop swag, though. “I’m kind of like a rapper trapped in a singer’s body,” Posner told Mixtape Daily. “That was the whole idea of me starting to sing in the first place. It took me a long time to stumble upon a sound, and I figured out I wanted to kinda sing rapper’s lyrics.” Maybe it’s his smoky voice or the way he intertwines slang into his lyrics, but the seemingly poppy Posner is a definite product of the hip-hop generation. Doubters need look no further than the recently released Layover. For much of the tape, Posner takes classic records like Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and Elton John’s “Rocket Man” and adds his own swag. On “Henny & Purple” the Detroit crooner dedicates an entire song to getting high and drinking drank; for “On Fire,” he and Machine Gun Kelly revisit Posner’s 2009 track “Drug Dealer Girl” and deliver a well-equipped sequel. Things get even dustier when Mike enlists former Slum Village lyricist Elzhi to jump on “Mittens Up.” On the bouncy track, Mike borrows from 50 Cent’s “Wanksta” when he sings, “Damn, homey, in high school you was the man, homey,” but it is Elzhi who has the tape’s most densely packed lyrics. “That’s why I make mixtapes, that’s why I work with Don Cannon, that’s why i work with Big Sean,” Posner said. “Even though I don’t rap, I got love and acceptance in that community, and that’s something that I really take seriously and hold close to my heart.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Trae Tha Truth Reaches For The Crown On Undisputed

Houston MC talks to Mixtape Daily about teaming with host Don Cannon and a gang of rap faves like Wiz Khalifa on latest tape. By Rob Markman Trae The Truth Photo: A.B.N. Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Headliner : Trae Tha Truth Mixtape : Undisputed Key Cameo : “Getting Paid,” featuring Wiz Khalifa Essential Info : A lot of MCs claim to be your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper, but judging from the amount of love that Houston’s Trae Tha Truth has been receiving lately, he may have sole claim to that crown. Just check the track list on his latest mixtape, Undisputed, which includes appearances by Young Jeezy, Pusha T, Rick Ross and Wiz Khalifa. It’s clear that Trae gets his respect. Undisputed comes as Trae is putting the finishing touches on his new studio album, Street King. The tape is hosted by DJ Don Cannon, and for Trae, the union between he and Cannon, is significant. “It was kinda something that was overdue with me and Cannon’s career. We’ve been in the talks of it for a minute but we both was real tied up,” he told Mixtape Daily. “Cannon actually hit me maybe two to three weeks before we put it out and was like, ‘It’s time.’ When he told me it was time, I came back into Houston , kinda stopped what I was doing, and got it going.” Despite being well-respected in the industry, Trae still feels that he and Cannon have a long way to go in terms of mainstream notice. “We were doing the tape just off the strength of us, just because we feel a lot of people overlook me for what I do on the music and a lot of people overlook him as far as what he do on the DJ game,” Trae explained. “We’re both household names, but we still gotta show a lot of people what it is.” Driven by hard-core street cuts like “Gettin Paid,” featuring Wiz Khalifa, Trae continues to reign as underground rap royalty, his stock rising with each release. On “Inkredible (Remix),” producer StreetRunner adds a new beat to Trae’s 2010 single, while Jadakiss adds a new verse. Now that the tape has dropped, Trae seems to have picked up the right momentum as he prepares the release of his full-length Street King on June 28. A week before the album’s release date, Trae will touch down in New York City for a rare headlining performance at SOB’s. Fred the Godson and French Montana are already confirmed guests, but Trae promised Mixtape Daily that there’ll be some surprises. I always seen him come in the studio when he was with Wayne. It’s crazy, because I never asked him for a track. I never wanted to press up on him like that. One day, he hit me up. He was like, ‘Yo, man, let’s do some songs.’ So I came to the studio. The first two songs [you saw videos for], ‘Holla at Me’ and ‘All the Girls Love,’ them two songs was like the first time we ever recorded. When we recorded them songs, he was like, ‘Let’s do a mixtape.’ It’s crazy, ’cause the mixtape, we did in a whole week. I flew out to VA, and we knocked out the whole mixtape. “Chris works fast,” he continued. “Me — I ain’t gonna lie — I write slow. I’m real picky. He was knocking the hooks out real quick, I was knocking out the verses. We knocked out, like, three songs a day.” Fan of a Fan has a dual meaning. Obviously, the tape’s two stars have a mutual admiration for each other, but they also wanted to acknowledge their followings. ” Fan of a Fan is basically our dedication back to the fans,” Tyga explained. “I feel like a lot of people is not doing it for their core audience. These are the people that come to our shows, these are the people that call these radio stations and fight for us all day. So why not give them something for free?” The tape touches on relationships with the ladies and spending money, and it also pushes C. Breezy as a rapper. ” ‘Deuces,’ it’s about you getting rid of this girl. You try to make it work, but you gotta move on,” Tyga explained. “So you basically put up one finger, then another and say, ‘Deuces.’ ‘Like a Virgin Again,’ that’s one of them old classic 2002 R&B songs. Like holding hands at the dance. That song’s about making a girl feel special, ’cause that’s what all girls want, of course. Telling her like, ‘If you are a virgin or you’re not a virgin, I’mma make you feel like one again.’ ‘What They Want’ is the first song on the mixtape. It’s introducing us together as a duo. It’s what the fans want. ’48 Bar Rap,’ that’s Chris rappin’. Showing his rap skills. “Chris is a certified rapper,” Tyga added. “That’s straight from Tyga at Young Money. Of course he’s a great singer, but he does his little rap thing too.” Tyga is working on his next album, Careless World, and said to look out for Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV “soon.” Other Heat This Week

The record is going to be a summer anthem. The Cam’ron-assisted cut could be the young Harlem spitter’s breakthrough single. “I don’t know what nobody thought,” Cam laughed last weekend in Atlanta when asked about the song. “It’s me. This is what I do for a living. But shout to Vado. It’s his record. He got the beat and all that. I was like, ‘Nah, we gotta put that out immediately.’ ” “The song is about partying, living the Harlem life. Ballin’. You already know,” Vado added. Everyone is talking about that long-awaited Diplomats reunion , which Cam and Jim Jones are still trying to work out now, but Killa isn’t waiting. He’s still focused on his new clique. “Let me break it down: We’re the U.N. That’s the name of the team,” Cam described. “The U.N. is ‘Us Now.’ We got an album coming out in August that’s gonna be stupid. Vado’s solo joint, look towards December [for that one]. But I want everybody to be focused on that U.N. album, ’cause when that comes out, it’s gonna be bananas. Stupid. This August. [‘Speakin Tongues’], this is the first single off of it.” As of now, the U.N. is officially just Killa and Vado; they have three other artists who are down with them but not signed. Cam and company have 10 videos coming to the Web in the next several days, including “Ooh Baby” “Large in the Streets” and “Stop It Five.” Vado is going to put out his solo mixtape with DJ Drama, Slime Flu, soon, and that brings us the business at hand: Boss of All Bosses 2.5. “At first, it was like the lost tapes. Tracks that were throwaways, then we added more flavor to it,” Vado explained. “What happened with the 2.5, ” Cam clarified, “we gave Drama maybe 25 songs [for Boss of All Bosses 2 ]. He was like, ‘You might as well come back with 2.5 in two weeks.’ But we were doing so much new music, we might as well call it 4.8. It’s crazy. It’s about 20 songs.” Other Heat This Week

Jessica Simpson Is ‘Stronger’ After Shooting ‘The Price of Beauty’

‘I know there’s nothing that anybody can say about me that will take me to a very low place,’ Simpson tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson Photo: WireImage She’s been criticized by people for her appearance. She’s had John Mayer talk about her private life to Playboy magazine. And while these things might have gotten under Jessica Simpson’s skin in the past, the singer, who premiered her new VH1 docu-series “The Price of Beauty” on Monday night, said these days, she’s up for any challenge. “I definitely faced a lot of fears in every country that we went to, but that’s what it was about,” she told MTV News. “It was about going out there and seeing how far I can push myself and seeing what I can discover. Like, ‘Who am I?’ ” She added that given her new, fresh perspective on things, she doesn’t care what anyone has to say these days. “I view the world very differently,” she said. “Everything’s not as big of a deal as people make it out to be, and that’s a really great place to be in. I know there’s nothing that anybody can say about me that will take me to a very low place, because I am stronger.” It was her experiences traveling all over the globe that gave Simpson strength. “The extremes [people] go to to feel beautiful, I think our society puts way, way too much pressure on a woman to feel beautiful,” she said. “But the extremes that we saw in all these different countries were amazing. It was, like, outrageous. “We went to Uganda. We were in fattening huts [where] the fatter you are, the more beautiful you are in this certain village we were in,” she continued. “And so the men want their women to look like cows, because the cows are their prize possession. So the bride-to-be has to gain 90 pounds before she gets married. It does push its limits to what’s healthy, what’s not healthy. I’ve done all kinds of stuff on this trip.” Did you watch Jessica’s new show? What do you think about the lengths people will go to for beauty? Weigh in below!
