Grandmother Of 10 Dies In Jail While Being Held On $300 Bail

The rest is here:

$30 could have potentially saved Janice Dotson-Stephens’ life. The 61-year-old grandmother of 10, from Texas, died in jail after being held on $300 bail since July 17. She was reportedly charged with criminal trespassing. However, her family didn’t know she was being held until her unfortunate passing. The in-custody death of Janice Dotson-Stephens, who languished in a Texas jail for months over an alleged minor offense, showed how the cash bail system can tragically kill people… https://t.co/d6V7RiIrT5 pic.twitter.com/l1KWueur99 — NewsOne (@newsone) December 19, 2018 Dotson-Stephens had a history of mental illness. According to Refinery 29 , Dotson-Stephens struggled with manic depression and paranoid tendencies for more than 40 years. “Despite her illness she was a great mother,” Michelle Dotson told Refinery29. “She knew she didn’t always have control and so when she did, she wanted us to be our best.” This instance wasn’t Dotson-Stephens’ first run-in with law enforcement. In the past, when she was arrested the family would be informed and she would be transferred to hospital and placed under psychiatric evaluation. “She had people who loved her and family who would have easily paid the $30 USD to get her out of jail if that’s what we had to do to take the next step,” Dotson-Stephens’ sister-in-law Leticia Dotson said in an interview with KSAT ABC . Her death is being investigated by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Black women continue to die in police custody. Earlier this year, Sandra Bland’s family released a documentary that explored the circumstances around Bland’s mysterious death . We hope all families get the justice they deserve. Bennett, whose last VMA appearance was in 1993, will introduce the tribute, which includes footage of him recording “Body and Soul” with Winehouse this past March at Abbey Road Studios in London. “It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse, and when you listen to the recording of ‘Body and Soul,’ it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known,” Bennett said in a statement. The single and video will be released by Columbia Records on September 14, Amy’s birthday, in support of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, established by the late singer’s family to help a number of charities connected with children and young people. The song will also appear on Bennett’s Duets II, out September 20. “Our family is honored that the VMAs are giving Amy this wonderful tribute,” Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s father, said in a statement. “We know that Amy’s performance of ‘Rehab’ at the MTV Movie Awards played an important part in Amy’s worldwide success.” Winehouse, known for the depth and power of her soulful voice, will be remembered by fans and peers for her awe-inspiring talent and classic hits such as “Rehab,” “Back to Black,” “Me & Mr. Jones,” and “You Know I’m No Good.” She died last month at the age of 27 of yet-undisclosed causes in her London apartment. On Tuesday (August 23), Winehouse’s family released a statement saying that toxicology reports found no traces of illegal substance in her system. Adele Says Amy Winehouse ‘Paved The Way For Artists Like Me’

‘Rolling in the Deep’ singer writes about being inspired by Winehouse. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Getty Images A common thread in many of the stories about the death of Amy Winehouse is the huge influence the “Back to Black” singer had on a new generation of young vocalists. Many of those singers, from Jessie J to Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson have weighed in on their sadness about the passing of Winehouse at the age of 27 from yet-undetermined causes. And while Winehouse has been mentioned as a touchstone for any number of new British pop crooners such as Duffy and Estelle, the one artist most frequently cited as a descendant of the Winehouse influence is Adele . With her smash hit 21 album , the year’s fastest selling to date on the back of a massive hit single, “Rolling in the Deep,” Adele is enjoying the kind of cross-over success that helped Winehouse move millions of copies of her 2006 breakthrough, Back to Black. She’s clearly benefitted from the trail blazed by the “Rehab” singer and on Monday (July 25), Adele reacted to the news with a thoughtful, heartfelt blog post in which she wrote about just how important Amy was to her sound and how much her influence will be missed. Click for photos of Amy Winehouse’s life and career. “Not many people have it in them to do something they love, simply because they love it,” wrote Adele in a post titled “Amy Flies in Paradise X.” “With no fuss and no compromise. But she knew what she was capable of and didn’t even need to try. If she wanted to do something she would and if she didn’t she’d say f— off. It came easy to her and that’s why we all loved her so much. We believed every word she wrote, and it would sink in deep when she sang them. Amy paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again whilst being fearlessly hilarious and blas

Further tests needed to determine cause of singer’s death on Saturday. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Rob Loud/ C3 Presents/ Front Row Center It could be several more weeks before we find out what caused singer Amy Winehouse ‘s death on Saturday at the age of 27. Police announced on Monday (July 25) that initial autopsy results were inconclusive and that additional toxicology tests were needed. According to The Associated Press, those toxicology screens could take two to four weeks to complete. Winehouse was found dead in bed at her Camden, England, apartment on Saturday afternoon, and initial reports indicate that no drugs were found in the flat. In 2008, Winehouse’s father, Mitch, revealed that years of smoking and drug-taking had resulted in his daughter suffering from the early stages of the incurable pulmonary ailment emphysema, which had scarred her lungs. Since rising to fame in 2006, Winehouse had struggled with a number of health issues and been hospitalized on a number of occasions for various ailments. Click for photos of Amy Winehouse’s life and career. She also struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, which resulted in Winehouse’s notoriously spotty live performance record , cemented in June by the cancellation of a planned European comeback tour after a disastrous gig in Belgrade . (Read one MTV News staffer’s account of an early Winehouse show in the Newsroom .) The coroner has adjourned the inquest into the singer’s death, which will allow Winehouse’s family to plan her funeral, which could take place as early as Tuesday. The coroner previously said that police have found no suspicious circumstances surrounding the Back to Black crooner’s death. Winehouse’s father, a cab driver-turned-lounge-singer, flew back to England on Sunday in the wake of his daughter’s death and visited her Camden apartment on Monday morning. According to BBC News , he thanked her fans — who have gathered in a vigil outside the building — for their support. “I can’t tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier for us,” he told the gathered mourners. “Amy was about one thing and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends and to you guys as well.” The singer’s mother, Janis, and brother, Alex, also visited the site to see the collection of flowers, cards and photos that Winehouse’s admirers have left. On Sunday, the family released a statement in which they said, “Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time.” Will You Remember Winehouse More For Her Music Or Troubles? Tell Us on Facebook. Solar Defends Guru’s Final Letter: ‘Those Are His Words’

‘This is what Guru wanted, not what Solar wanted,’ the Gang Starr MC’s friend tells MTV News about controversial statement. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Sway Calloway Solar and Sway Photo: MTV News The controversy over Guru’s last statement to the public continues. On Tuesday, after the Gang Starr MC’s death , his friend Solar put out a letter that he said Guru wrote in his final days. The letter had Guru distancing himself from his Gang Starr partner, DJ Premier. Fans, fellow MCs and even Guru’s family questioned whether the letter was authentic. Solar maintained the same stance he had on Tuesday afternoon when he talked with MTV News: The letter is real, and he had not doctored the words. “This is what Guru wanted, not what Solar wanted,” Solar told Sway on Wednesday (April 21). “Only thing I can say is, when he wrote his statements and we recorded his life story [Solar said that he and Guru also wrote the MC’s life story months ago], he recorded it the way he saw it. He didn’t record it to fit somebody else’s desires. He didn’t write his story or his records to fit what Gang Starr fans wanted or what Jazzmatazz fans wanted. He did his music and lived his life according to what Guru wanted. Guru is a man. He lived his own life. He was in no way, shape or form not living his life according to his own plans. He wasn’t being dictated to. He wasn’t being told what to do. He made his own decisions. He ate what he wanted to eat, lived where he wanted to live, dated who he wanted to date.” Solar said he and Guru put the letter together in January, one month prior to him being admitted in the hospital, where he would stay until he died Monday of myeloma cancer. When asked if the words were 100 percent Guru’s, Solar said: “To the most part. When it’s written, you put it in the proper framework. But yes, these are his words. “Guru wrote some of it himself,” Solar added. “The myeloma affected his hands, his coordination. So he sat down and talked to me. I made physical notes, and I made mental notes of his life, strategic events, songs, concepts. We realized over the last year these things had to be documented. His particular document had to be edited down from a larger statement, which was two statements combined. It was [originally] one statement: ‘If I’m in the hospital and things get to a certain point, what do I want to release to the fans?’ He had a statement that was released earlier, and people said, ‘Oh, it’s not Guru.’ Every major star, every major athlete who passes and releases a statement through their loved ones, this is standard. There’s nothing odd about this.” On Wednesday, Guru’s family released a statement refuting points in the letter Solar released, including mention of a charity organization. DJ Premier released his own statement expressing his love for his former music partner. Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below.
