Meghan Markle & Prince Harry: Bracing For an Awkward Thanksgiving?

Well, it’s that time of year again. On Thursday, millions of Americans will gather to spew mouthfuls of mashed potato at their loved ones as they get all red in the face at the sight of kneeling football players. Thanksgiving can be especially daunting if you’re half of a new or newly engaged couple, as you may wind up getting raked over the coals by relatives you’re meeting for the first time, or ones who are just now taking you seriously because there’s a ring on your finger. Are royals exempt from this sort of awkward encounter? Well, usually yes, since they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in the U.K. But Harry fell in love with an American, which means many of his future Novembers will be spent in confusion over why a holiday that supposedly celebrates gratitude and togetherness is now synonymous with politically-charged vitriolic debate. Fortunately, the couple will be spared any discussion of whose family to spend the holiday with, as Harry’s kin is understandably not on board with a holiday that celebrates the act of fleeing England. Meghan has much to be grateful for this season, as not only will she soon be royalty (She’s not officially engaged to Harry yet, but insiders say it’s only a matter of time.), she also made a major career change recently. After eight seasons and countless–we’re guessing lawsuits?–Meghan has bid farewell to the show that made her famous-ish. Yes, Markle has quit Suits , and sources say her emotional last day of filming took place last week. “Meghan was supposed to wrap by the end of Wednesday but, for whatever reason, she ended up having to work Thursday morning in Toronto,” a source tells E! News. So now she’s through with work obligations and free to focus on her royal future. Many fans are wondering if Harry will be joining Meghan and her family for his first stateside Thanksgiving. Not surprisingly, the answer is … no one really knows. Insiders say Harry is planning to join Meghan in LA, but that hasn’t been confirmed by any sort of royal schedule. Whatever the case, Markle will reportedly be making yet another major change in her life immediately following the holiday. “It’ll then be time for Meghan to move to London and into Harry’s place,” the insider says of Meh’s Black Friday agenda. We’re hoping Harry will be joining the Markle clan and trying to make sense of American football on Thursday, but if he opts out, that may be for the best. According to an Australian historian , the holiday has special meaning to Meghan, as one of her ancestors was a founder of the Massachusetts community of Nantucket. That fellow–who we assume starred on the colonial version of Suits entitled Waistcoats –had a great-great-great-grandfather who was beheaded by Harry’s most notorious royal forebear, Henry VIII. Could make for some awkward dinner table convo. And you were worried about your MAGA-hat wearing uncle butting heads with your Bernie Bro cousin who’s back from his first semester at art school. Tarek and Christina El Moussa Mourn Death of Flip or Flop Contractor

Both Tarek El Moussa and Christina El Moussa have taken to social media in mourning of a loved one. The same loved one, it turns out.  On Friday, Frank Miller lost his battle with laryngeal cancer, passing away peacefully at an Orange County hospital in California. The long-time contractor had worked closely with Tarek and Christina for years on Flip or Flop, the home renovation series that has been such a huge hit for HGTV. In tribute to their late friend, the former couple shared memories of Frank and bid him farewell over the weekend. “Good bye My dear friend Frank,” Tarek wrote, adding: “I have always looked up to you and have respected you as a brother. You have touched not only myself and my family but thousands and thousands around the world. “You have impacted so many lives with the fight inside your heart and soul… “I will NEVER forget you and I hope to one day be as strong as you.” “Now…don’t slack!” Tarek concluded. “I assume you are already working on remodeling heaven! Miss you buddy.” Christina also sent a few thoughts Miller’s way. “Frank since the day I met you I had the utmost respect for you,” she wrote. Continued the popular HGTV personality: “Hardworking and REAL. Always a pleasure to be around and always made me laugh. You fought your hardest!! You are so admired and respected by all who know you. “God has a special place for you in Heaven. Love you and miss you.” Tarek and Christina split up about a year ago. They recently acknowledged their divorce and how far they’ve come in separate social media posts . In May, the co-stars went public went the tale of Frank’s cancer diagnosis. A GoFundMe account was sent up by Miller’s co-worker, Alison Diaz, that ended up raising over $31,000 to help Frank cover his medical treatments. “As some of you know… he’s been fighting multiple cancers for many years, even while filming our show, and he’s still putting up the fight of his life,” Tarek wrote on Instagram at the time. “The doctors told him a year ago he would not make it past 6 months, he’s proving them wrong, this man is a beast.” Tarek, of course, has overcome two different cancer diagnoses himself. The GoFundMe remains active, it should be noted. If you’d like to make a donation, please go ahead and do so . May Frank Miller rest in peace.

‘Batman V Superman’ Isn’t Getting Any Help From ‘Dark Knight Returns’ Writer

It’s no secret that “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” takes a lot of inspiration from Frank Miller’s seminal, “The Dark Knight Returns” – from the older, weathered Batman with short ears to his armored throw-down with the Man of Steel. But according to Miller, who I spoke with at San Diego Comic-Con, he has… Read more »

WATCH: Zach Galifianakis Kills A Giraffe In ‘The Hangover Part III’ Teaser Trailer

Todd Phillips likes his exotic animals. The Hangover had a tiger, the sequel featured a monkey, and, this teaser trailer for  The Hangover Part III   includes cameos by a  giraffe (that appears to meet an untimely end) and some sort of bird of prey.  There’s also a beefy dude in a pig mask chasing Zach Galifianakis . Does that count?  If you prefer your comedy to be delivered by humans, check out the sexual tension scene involving Galifianakis, Melissa McCarthy  and a lollipop— and  Ed Helms  throwing up in his mouth. There’s not enough Ken Jeong in this clip as far as I’m concerned, but it’s good to have the Wolf Pack back. The Hangover Part III opens on May 24. More on The Hangover Part III:  Engorgio! WATCH: Indie Darling Julia Garner Talks ‘Electrick Children’ & ‘Sin City 2’

Last year, independent film gave us Elizabeth Olsen, and this year it appears the spotlight is set to shine on her Martha Marcy May Marlene co-star Julia Garner.   But whether she’s doing an indie film like Electrick Children or Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s upcoming Sin City 2 , Garner says “it’s all about finding a good story”. What’s the story behind Electrick Children ?  Kickstarter!  When writer/director Rebecca Thomas and producer Jessica Caldwell, then film students at Columbia, wanted to fund her feature film about a Mormon teenager’s voyage of discovery they turned to the popular website – and literally struck gold. More Mormons?  Yes it looks like pop culture isn’t done with the religious group yet, Thomas told me she “wanted to adapt the Virgin Mary story from the Bible, and thought if there was ever a girl who thought she had immaculate conception it would probably be from one of these really closed-off fundamentalist communities.” Check out my full interview at The Cinema Society and Make Up For Ever’s NYC screening below: Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . Iran A Possible Oscar No-Show After Boycott Threat

Even as Iran’s boisterous leader (but not supreme leader) President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is in New York for the opening of the U.N. Assembly this week, and already causing some local controversy here staying at a luxury Manhattan hotel, his country is apparently opening a new front in its anti-U.S. proclivities – The Oscars. An Iranian official said his country should boycott the 2013 Academy Awards and not submit a film for Best Foreign-language consideration due to the anti-Islam video Innocence of Muslims which rocketed the Muslim world since its debut on YouTube earlier this month. Iranian cinema has won accolades at festivals around the world for some time now. The government has jailed various filmmakers there, most notably Jafar Panahi ( Crimson Gold ). Last year, fellow Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi won the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language film for A Separation , a first for a filmmaker from that country. But now, Iran’s filmmaking community may be shut out of the Oscars – at least in the foreign-language category – if the country’s head of its government-controlled cinema agency has his way. Javad Shamaghdari said the committee that oversees selection of Iran’s choice for the Oscar category should “avoid” doing so, according to A.P. , which quoted Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency. The committee had already identified Ye Habbeh Ghand ( A Cube of Sugar ), which centers on a family wedding that turns into a funeral after the groom’s relative dies, to represent Iran’s choice at the Oscars in February. The government still needs to give its consent for the title to move forward. Shamaghdari said the a boycott of the Oscars should take place until the Academy denounces Innocence of Muslims , the once-little noticed video that has resulted in major clashes outside U.S. missions throughout the Islamic world, killing at least 51 people including the U.S. ambassador to Libya. Shamaghdari has in the past pulled Iranian films from festivals worldwide. After Farhadi’s win earlier this year, Iranian officials praised the Academy Award triumph for A Separation , especially since it took the prize over an Israeli film also vying in the category. Some nationalists, however, denounced what they saw as a less than rosy view of Iranian life portrayed in the film, which involves a marriage falling apart. [ Source: A.P. ]

How Do You Like Them Veins, Bub? First Official Look At Buff Hugh Jackman From The Wolverine

D’you mind if he puts his Adamantium claws around you? Twentieth Century-Fox has released the first official photo of an extremely lean and ripped Hugh Jackman in James Mangold’s film adaption of Frank Miller and Chris Claremont’s 1982 limited comic series classic,   The Wolverine.   The superhero’s sinewy look appears to jibe with comments that Jackman made to Empire magazine that he had Robert De Niro’s unhinged performance as Max Cady in  Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake of Cape Fear a s a benchmark for his performance. “You were terrified of that character from the moment he took his shirt off and you saw all the tats; you know he was this coiled spring that would rip your head off, no matter how nonchalant he acted. That’s who Wolverine is. I always thought of him as being lean, animalistic, not necessarily pretty. He has all this berserkery, and he’s terrifying when he loses all reason in blind rage.” Set in Japan, Logan/Wolverine becomes romantically involved with a woman whose hand in marriage is promised to another man.Lots of claw and swordplay follows as his refusal to give up the woman he loves leads to clashes with the woman’s father, her  brothers and Silver Samurai. The film is set to be released July 23, 2013 Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

If you’re already jonesing for more gritty Batman heroics, you won’t have to wait for the eventual home video release of The Dark Knight Rises to get your fix: The folks at Warner Premiere have announced the September release of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns , an animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s celebrated 1986 graphic novel charting the return of the retired Caped Crusader to a Gotham City in need. Bonus cool points: Peter Weller as Batman! This version of Bat-lore follows a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne as he comes out of retirement to battle old foe Harvey Dent/Two Face, also tangling with The Joker, local cops, and the U.S. government. Sidekick Robin pops up — in the form of a 13-year-old girl named Carrie — as does fellow DC superhero Superman, with whom Batman battles.
