Frozen came out on November 27, 2013. But every single parent around the country will confirm that this Disney blockbuster truly left its mark over the past 12 months. And he or she will likely be doing so while “Let It Go” is blaring from their car stereo for the 37th time that day. Indeed, due to the film’s cultural impact; its wide reach; its infiltration into millions of homes; and, of course, its soundtrack, Frozen’s main protagonist, Princess Elsa of Arendelle, is THG’s Celebrity of the Year #6 . Before delving into the myriad ways in which Elsa has grown into a global icon, let’s take a look at Frozen by the numbers: It grossed $400 million in the U.S. and Canada. It grossed $1.3 billion around the world. It became the highest-grossing animated movie of all-time. It won two Academy Awards. It won two Critics Choice Awards. But numbers can only explain so much. Frozen also inspired an entire storyline for Once Upon a Time Season 4 . It led to a surge in “Elsa” as a baby name. It enabled folks such as Anna Faith Carlson to make a living. In case you were blissfully unaware (like most of the television viewing public), Glee is still a show that’s on a major network somehow. While most of the series’ formerly obsessed fans abandoned Glee after one of the many times it jumped the shark, Fox granted the long-slumping ex-hit a stay of execution so that it could properly wrap things up…and, of course, cash in on the popularity of Frozen. Lea Michele: “Let It Go” Yes, we’ve known for months that Lea Michele would sing “Let It Go” during the Glee’s sixth and final season, and unlike so much of what the show’s writers have done in recent years, it makes perfect sense. Not only does the Broadway-show-stopper style of the tune make it a perfect fit for both Glee and Michele’s singing voice, but “Let It Go” was originally sung by Idina Menzel , who plays Lea’s mom on the show. At the very least, it makes a lot more sense than Once Upon a Time’s co-opting of Frozen’s characters , which was an idea that seemed to spring from a writer’s meeting in which someone pointed out that Disney owns ABC and people really like Frozen. Glee has a talented cast, and depending on what you look for in a show, that might be reason enough to tune into the final season. Judging by the colossal ratings for Once Upon a Time’s season premiere last night, audiences are being sucked into the world of Disney’s Frozen once again. Ever since it was announced back in spring that the show would feature storylines based on the animated musical smash, fan interest in OUAT has been at an all-time high. The casting of Georgiana Haig as Queen Elsa in June generated controversy. (Most fans approved, but some had been pushing for Elsa lookalike and Internet celeb Anna Faith Carlson ). But we doubt producers’ decision to cast Tyler Jacob Moore’s as Hans will provoke will be the subject of much debate. Yes, People magazine provided us with our first look at Moore as Hans , and this dude certainly has the right look. It remains to be seen whether Moore will be able to capture Hans’ mix of sleazy charm and barely-contained rage, but we can’t imagine another actor looking more perfectly like the Prince of the Southern Isles made flesh and blood. In addition to the Ice Queen and Hans, the show’s casting directors perfectly nailed the Elsa’s sister, as well her parents King Agdar and Queen Idun – all of whom look pretty much exactly as they did on the big screen. Hopefully, the show’s writers will be able to rise to the occasion as well. Those Frozen fans can be tough to please. Dads, avert your eyes and lock up your daughters … If you thought the apparently real Frozen wedding dress was the most ridiculous product stemming from the hit movie you could buy … you’re still right.
