Reality Check: 500,000 Haitian People Still Living In Tents On The Two Year Anniversary Of The January 12 Earthquake [PICS]

It doesn’t even seem like it’s been that long , does it? Sadly, Haitians have grown used to seeing earthquake rubble and the makeshift camps that sprang up after that fateful day in January 2010. The United Nations, Haitian officials and private aid agencies have said that Haiti has made strides in the two years since the quake. But few deny that recovery has been painfully slow. All you have to do is look at Leocal. And she might be considered one of the lucky ones. She has a “home,” however modest. The United Nations estimated the 7.0-magnitude earthquake affected nearly 3 million people and killed about 220,000. More than 1.5 million people were left homeless in a country that was already the poorest in the Western hemisphere and wracked by crisis. Consider that 70% of Haitians did not have stable jobs before the quake and there were only 5.9 doctors per 10,000 residents. Two years later, almost as many Haitians are still unemployed. Debris still clutters the capital and other places. About half the rubble, the equivalent of five football stadiums full, has been removed, according to the United Nations. About half a million people are still homeless. Many still live in tents in the shadows of the collapsed presidential palace, perhaps the most visible symbol of Haiti’s misery. “You can’t stay on the streets,” Leocal said. “If that’s what you have, you have to rebuild.” She is not alone in her frustration. Thousands of Haitians marched Wednesday through Port-au-Prince to the Parliament building to demand a reform of land laws so they can be freed to build homes, said Marjorie Bertrand Dumornay, coordinator of the grass-roots campaign funded by ActionAid Haiti. “The rebuilding process is mostly led by the foreigners,” she said. “There is no national plan. The Haitian state does not have the will.” Michel Martelly, the former pop star who was elected president last year partly because he presented a fresh face in Haitian politics, campaigned on a pledge to fix Haiti. But it took him months to even form a government and he recently said that motivating people to move in the nation’s “culture of immobilism” has been a challenge. Standing recently on a site where he said more than 600 families had been living in tents until just days ago, Martelly said the government was able to relocate them in housing. The project, he said, cost $9 million because damaged homes had to be either repaired or reconstructed. He acknowledged that many thousands are still waiting. “But it’s about sending the signal,” he told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “It’s not about having the magic stick and making the problem disappear in one day. If you plant a tree today, in order to enjoy the shadow, you have to wait five years. So changing Haiti is going to take time and healing the wounds is going to take time.” Here’s wising the Haitian people continued progress in their healing and rebuilding. Take a look at pictures taken in Haiti over the past on the flip.

Pras Explains Endorsing Wyclef Presidential Rival

‘The reality is we need a real leader … a transformative leader,’ onetime Fugees bandmate tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Pras Photo: MTV News Wyclef Jean has now formally announced to fanfare that he’ll run for the presidency of Haiti . But for all of the support coming his way, the musician didn’t manage to receive the endorsement of one of his former Fugees groupmembers. Pras has endorsed rival candidate Michel Martelly, telling MTV News on Friday (August 6) that Martelly is better equipped to revive the ravaged country. Pras stressed his appreciation for Wyclef’s efforts to aid Haiti but said he simply thinks his friend would be in over his head. “Basically, I went down to Haiti yesterday to endorse a friend of mine named Michel Martelly. He’s an ex-musician, very, very popular down in Haiti,” Pras explained. “He used to go by the name “Sweet Micky.” “Listen, I love Wyclef to death, he continued. “We came up together, we grew up together, we basically called each other cousins. But the reality is this, we need a real leader. Not just a regular leader, but a transformative leader. Someone that’s gonna be able to galvanize the Haitians down on the field, the Haitian-Americans, the international community, it’s a collective support — to take this country to the 21st century. And I’m just not convinced Wyclef is the one for that.” Pras was particularly effusive in praising Wyclef for bringing global attention to Haiti in the wake of the country’s debilitating earthquake this past January. “But that does not mean he can become the next president of Haiti,” Pras said. ‘Clef formally declared his run for president during an appearance Thursday night on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” “If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as president,” Wyclef said in the interview, “then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.” He pushed his political neutrality as an asset; Haiti has long been dominated by corrupt government regimes. Pras said he became aware in July that Wyclef had Haiti’s elections on his mind, though he didn’t think his friend would seriously contemplate running himself. Rather, Pras thought Wycelf would endorse his own uncle, who has served in an ambassador post to Haiti, in Washington D.C., in the past. Pras also revealed he hadn’t spoken directly to Wyclef before he made public his endorsement of Martelly. Representatives for Wyclef had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment at press time. What do you think of Pras endorsing Wyclef’s rival for the Haitian presidency? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Pras Wyclef Jean

Tony Yayo Urges Fans: ‘Don’t Forget’ About Haiti

‘Keep donating,’ says the G-Unit rapper, who is of Haitian descent. By Shaheem Reid Tony Yayo Photo: Getty Images While reflecting on the tragic earthquake and aftershock in Haiti just a half a year later, Tony Yayo said he has a message for everyone: “I want to tell people it’s only been six months,” he told MTV News on Tuesday (July 13). “Don’t forget what happened. And all the people that donated [before], keep donating and do what you got to do.” Yayo — who is of Haitian descent — suffered the loss of a relative and some friends in the disaster but said he and his family are just like the rest of the people in Haiti: recovering. “My family is good. We lost one cousin. That was tragic. But everybody is kinda taking it in stride,” Yayo said via phone from Brazil, where he’s on tour with 50 Cent , Lloyd Banks and DJ Whoo Kid. “I was watching CNN the other day, and one of the things I saw was all the Haitians happy about the World Cup,” Tony continued. “That was amazing that a soccer game could uplift, that people that were in a tragic situation could be happy over a soccer game.” Yayo acknowledges the recovery efforts going on in Haiti but feels more can be done — by himself and others. “It’s crazy, man, because they said there are [hundreds of millions of dollars]. I’m not sure of the number, but they say they can’t touch some of the money yet,” Yayo said. “I don’t understand that, but it’s crazy the relief efforts generated that much money. “Last time, we did Funkmaster Flex’s car show and Wyclef came onstage with me, 50 and Banks,” he added. “I’m sure you’ve seen that. The mission now is for [the G-Unit] to get to Haiti. That’s our thing, is to get down there, but we want to send clothes and more stuff down there.” Wyclef Jean blogged about continued earthquake-relief efforts for CNN on Tuesday, asking that progress be expedited because it’s “being made at the speed of a turtle.” What more can be done to help Haiti? Share your ideas in the comments. Related Artists Tony Yayo

RACIST Ponds Cosmetic Commercial

Cosmetic companies make skin bleaching products to fulfill the ill-informed desire of some people that feel they need to pursue the euro-centric ideal of beauty by having white skin. There's been a documentary on Current where Jamaicans bleach their skin to which skin bleaching can cause skin cancer. It's even more outrageous that they have actual commercials that say if you have dark skin, you're not good enough. Embedded is only ONE of a whole series of commercials with a connected story of this dark skinned Indian women who apparently needs to keep using Pond's skin whitener to win back her man who was stolen from her by this lighter complexioned woman. Ridiculous. What's even worse is the fact that people follow this awful ideal. For example, in the Haitian earthquake disaster, the Thai government offered to send millions of skin creams to whiten the skin of Haitians cuz they're all “so dark” (if they paid for shipping) saying, “We noticed in the news that the Haitians are all very dark-skinned. This is surely one of the reasons they are living in poverty. With lighter skin they could be more successful.” http://www.rightsandwrongs.co.uk/asia/thailand/1514-thais-donate-whitening-skin-… added by: Aether_Vitae

Angelina Jolie Visits Haiti, Is Awesome

Yesterday, we showered Angelina Jolie with praise due to her personal involvement in so many charitable causes, the latest of which being the earthquake in Haiti. For irrational, jealous reasons, however, many haters commented that Jolie only pretends to care about the less fortunate because it helps her image. There’s no proof of this, merely the assumption that someone who once acted strangely (i.e. wore a vial of Billy Bob Thornton’s blood around her neck) couldn’t possibly have a selfless bone in her body. We find this narrow-minded and absurd. But even if we were to grant the premise that Jolie has ulterior motives for her actions, we ask readers: SO WHAT? Does that make her money any less helpful to the charities it is given to? Does this make her presence any less inspiring to the Haitians she visited this week? Instead of taking wild guesses about what’s going on inside Angelina’s mind and heart, why not look at the actions themselves: She and Brad Pitt have donated $1 million to relief efforts in Haiti. She visited the SOS NGO Village for children in Port-au-Prince yesterday, along with the Doctors Without Borders hospital in the region. You want to believe this is all some calculated PR move? Go right ahead, even though we pity you for taking such a cynical, negative stance. But in an era where Kim Kardashian is admired by millions for posing on the red carpet, isn’t it refreshing to see Jolie on the front lines of poverty, regardless of her internal motivations for being there? The people of Haiti sure think so. Watch their reaction to Angelina in the video below. In Haiti
