Florida Sinkhole Photos Revealed; Missing Man Now Presumed Dead

Demolition crews are working on razing the Florida home where a sinkhole opened up last week underneath a bedroom, swallowing a sleeping man. Jeff Bush, 37, was declared “presumed dead” by Hillsborough County officials on Sunday as rescue workers abandoned hope of recovering his body. Looking at photos of the Florida sinkhole , you can see why: The goal now is to demolish the rest of the house before efforts will begin to stabilize the sinkhole, said William Puz, a spokesman for Hillsborough County. The hole was about 30 feet wide and 60 feet deep and filled with clay and debris. It is unlikely that Bush’s body will ever be retrieved, officials said. Two nearby houses have been evacuated because the sinkhole has weakened the ground underneath them; residents probably will never be allowed inside. Bush, a landscaper, had moved into the four-bedroom home only two months ago; he shared it with his brother, Jeremy Bush, 36, and four others. A wrecking crew on Sunday began the demolition of the house, going about its job as carefully as it can to preserve any and all contents for survivors. Bush disappeared into the sinkhole under his bedroom Thursday night. The other occupants of the house, owned by the family of Jeremy Bush’s fiancee, were preparing for bed when they heard a loud crash and Jeff screaming. Engineers placed listening devices, microphones, ground-penetrating radar and other equipment testing the soil on the site to seek a safety zone. They looked extensively for signs of life, but never detected any. Sinkholes in Florida are largely caused by the state’s porous geological bedrock, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. As acidic rainwater filters into the ground, it dissolves rock, causing erosion that leads to underground caverns, which cause sinkholes when they collapse.

Jay Leno Retirement: Imminent?

A new rumor suggests that Jay Leno will retire from The Tonight Show next spring. For real this time. Seriously. No backsies for a change. A pair of high level NBC executives say the network is concerned that Jimmy Kimmel’s move to 11:35 p.m. on ABC is sucking up all the younger late-night viewers – and that Jimmy Fallon should therefore be installed as Tonight Show host before it’s too late. “Kimmel has done extremely well,” a network veteran tells The Hollywood Reporter . ” Jay wins overall , but on any given night, it’s neck-and-neck in 18-49. I understand where they might have fear and also feel that they own the solution [in Fallon.]” According to the report, Leno would announce in May that he is stepping down from the coveted spot when his contract is up at the end of the 2013-2014 television season. Fallon would then premiere with a “soft launch” during the summer of 2014 before a formal fall debut. Asked about the possibility, a rep for Leno simply said: “We do not speculate on rumor.”

Sinkhole Swallows Florida House; Man Missing

A 37-year-old Florida man is missing after being swallowed by a sinkhole that appeared under his bedroom around 11 p.m. Thursday, an official said. Jeffrey Bush has not been heard from since the hole appeared in his bedroom in Seffner, Fla., near Tampa. Bush is feared to have been killed. Sinkhole in Florida Authorities have said the sinkhole, believed to be up to 30 feet deep, was “seriously unstable.” A 100-foot safety zone was set up around it Friday. Nearby homes were evacuated for fear of a sudden collapse. Jessica Damico, public relations officer for Hillsborough County Fire Department, said Saturday that experts resumed working at the site at 7 a.m. ET. “Right now they are still looking at soil samples and drilling and looking for stability, so they can find the edge of the sinkhole ,” she said from the scene. She said the sinkhole seemed to be about 15 feet deep, or perhaps even more. However she added the actual depth of unstable ground was unclear. Damico said there was still no sign of Jeffrey Bush. “If you look in, it’s about 15 feet and then there’s only sand,” she said, noting that engineers are only using camera equipment to examine the hole. The area is still too unstable for people to go onto. Bill Bracken, the owner of an engineering company called to assess the hole, said he “cannot tell you why it [the house] has not collapsed yet.” He said the earth below is a “very large, very fluid mass.” “This is not your typical sinkhole,” Hillsborough County administrator Mike Merrill added. “This is a chasm. For that reason, we’re being very deliberate.” While some in the neighborhood did not the risks, sinkholes are common in Florida; home insurers are required by law to provide coverage for them. Florida’s geological makeup increases the likelihood of sinkholes, and more than 500 have been reported in Hillsborough County since 1954. A monster 400-foot sinkhole sucked in a house, five sports cars, two businesses, and part of a swimming pool, appearing near Orlando back in 1981. “Envision a piece of Swiss cheese,” Taylor Yarkosky, a sinkhole expert from Brooksville, Fla., told the AP. “Any house in Florida could be in that situation.”

O.J. Murdock’s Death Officially Ruled As Suicide

This story still has so many unanswered questions… Almost two months after O.J. Murdock passed away, the Hillsborough County (Fla.) medical examiner’s office has officially ruled the cause of death a suicide. The former Tennessee Titans wide receiver died on July 30th. Interim Medical Examiner, Dr. Mary K. Mainland, signed off on the autopsy report last Friday. According to Sports Illustrated , O.J.’s family plans to have further investigations into the cause of death… What remains unclear is what effect, if any, football played in the July 30 tragedy. Murdock was the fifth former NFL player in the last two years to take his own life and the fourth this year — following Kurt Crain (April 10), Ray Easterling (April 19), Junior Seau (May 2) — and his family has consented to his brain tissue being examined by Boston University researchers studying the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative disease brought on by multiple concussions. While his family awaits the findings from that study, his death remains a puzzling tragedy for them, his friends, teammates and former coaches. By the accounts of those people who knew him best, Murdock was a happy young soul with a 500-watt smile and fervor to restart his NFL career with the Titans after missing his rookie season last year with a torn Achilles tendon. “When you met O.J., you fell in love with him. He was a humble young man who just had this great gleam in his eye,” said Hadley Engelhard, his agent. “He just had a wonderful personality,” said Harry Hubbard, who was Murdock’s head football coach at Middleton High in Tampa. “He had a great smile. He was a loving person.” Images via AP/twitter

This is sad: A father has been accused of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his six-year-old son more than 20 times. Police say Xavier Thomas knifed the boy, also called Xavier, after they had watched a New Year’s Eve fireworks display together near their home in Tampa, Florida. The boy was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital but his injuries are not said to be life-threatening.
