Bosnian Protesters Decry "Ignorant" Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie has become the target of more criticism, this time regarding her feature directorial debut, not just her hatred of Thanksgiving . A love story set during the Bosnian War, her film was cut short after rumors that it portrayed a relationship between a rapist and his victim. The project has sparked protests and was called “ignorant” by a group of women who were victims of sexual violence during the 1990s war. In a letter to the United Nations refugee agency, for which the movie star is a goodwill ambassador, the Women Victims of War criticized her sharply. They say they are “deeply concerned about the movie.” “Angelina Jolie’s ignorant attitude towards victims says enough about the scenario and gives us the right to continue having doubts,” the letter read. After rumors of the rapist story line surfaced in October, a group of Bosnian War rape victims pressured officials to withdraw Jolie’s filming permit. The rumors proved to be untrue. The country’s minister of culture read the script – about a Bosnian woman who falls in love with a Serb man – and Jolie’s permit was reinstated. However, Jolie earlier this month cut the shooting schedule from 10 days to three and decided to film some of the scenes in Hungary instead. At the time, Jolie said she wanted to meet with the groups that complained to clear up any misunderstanding, but no meeting ever transpired. “We have insisted to meet Angelina Jolie since we don’t want to be wrongly presented in the world … Our voices are worthwhile and we should have got much more respect,” the WVW letter read. “Angelina has made a big mistake.” “We feel that she did not act like a real UNHCR ambassador and we believe that she has no more credibility to remain the ambassador.” Wait until that big Angelina Jolie drug video leaks!

Lindsay Lohan Shows Off Some Skin

Here’s Lindsay Lohan continuing her rehab hotness in a nice little sundress the other day. I don’t know what kind of program she’s in, but it seems to be pretty chill, my parents just duck taped me to my bed for a week. Whatever she’s doing, it seems to be working because she’s looking a lot better. Don’t get me wrong, I loved drunk Lindsay, but I like a woman who’s going to remember me in the morning. There’s nothing worse than trying to convince a chick you just spent the night with that you didn’t just break into her house to steal her collection of Beanie Babies .

Black Eyed Peas Were ‘Still Passionate’ For The Beginning

‘For every ending is a new beginning,’ will.i.am says of the band’s new album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash The Black Eyed Peas Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images The last album the Black Eyed Peas released was called The E.N.D., but the album didn’t signify the end for the band, instead it launched the band into a whole new era where they embraced futuristic club jams and became chart-topping sensations. On Tuesday (November 30), the group is hoping to rekindle that magic with their latest release, The Beginning. “Because the last record was The E.N.D. [and] for every ending is a new beginning that’s why it’s The Energy Never Dies, ” will.i.am told MTV News on the red carpet of the AMAs earlier this month. “We’re still showing you the energy, so let’s call it The Beginning. ” Just like their last, the Peas wanted this album to express the world around them, Will explained. ” The E.N.D. was a zeitgeist of the time, articulating that it’s the end of the era,” he continued. “We’re still passionate about music, so The Beginning [is] utilizing all the technologies, doing new things. Stuff like that, that’s The Beginning. ” Apl.de.ap said the group — which was just announced as next year’s Super Bowl halftime act — also looked at their competitors for inspiration. “Also going out, we try and check out the scene, the city and be inspired by other producers or other DJs, what kind of stuff they’re playing,” he explained. “So that’s how we keep fresh.” Leading lady Fergie explained how easy it was to record while on the road. “I mean you have to realize this album was made on tour,” she said. “Basically these guys have hotel rooms with studios in them. Now technology has allowed us to make albums in hotel rooms. They’d leave their doors open, and I’d walk in [and just start singing].” And even though they’ve been around the block a few times, Taboo said it’s important for them to feel like this really is still The Beginning for BEP. “[We have to] stay hungry and keep wanting to push the envelope,” he said. “Don’t be comfortable and settle. Will says once you start slacking off, there’s someone that’s hungrier than you. You have to stay hungry.” What’s your favorite Black Eyed Peas song? Talk about it in the comments.

Grave of the Fireflies: A Japanese Anime Masterpiece

“Grave of the Fireflies” is a Japanese anime masterpiece, an animated drama film written and directed by Isao Takahata, with animation production work provided by Studio Ghibli. “Grave of the Fireflies” tells the story of two children from Japan’s port city of Kobe, who have been made homeless by the WWII American firebombing of the city. The film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Nosaka Akiyuki, who was a boy at the time of the firebombs, whose sister did die of hunger and whose life has been shadowed by guilt. Roger Ebert considers “Grave of the Fireflies” to be one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever made and has described the film as “an emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation….“Grave of the Fireflies” is a powerful dramatic film that happens to be animated, and I know what the critic Ernest Rister means when he compares it to “Schindler’s List” and says, “It is the most profoundly human animated film I’ve ever seen.” The film tells a simple story of survival. The boy and his sister must find a place to stay and food to eat. But in wartime their relatives are neither kind nor generous, and and the boy soon is left to fend for both himself and his young sister. He has some money and can buy food, but soon there is no food to buy. His sister grows weaker and weaker. Their story is told not as melodrama, but rather in the simple and direct manner of the neo-realist tradition. And there is time for silence in it. One of the film’s greatest gifts is its patience; shots are held so that we can think about them; characters are glimpsed in their private moments; atmosphere and nature are given time to establish themselves. This piece includes a number of high-resolution colorful illustrations, as well as an HD full-version of the acclaimed animated film. http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/11/29/grave-of-the-fireflies-a-japanese-an… added by: disembedded

Avril Lavigne Needs Women’s Clothing

Here’s Avril Lavigne out the other day running a few errands with her man servant. I’m just assuming that’s her man servant because he’s got a haircut like a Tibetan monk, he’s walking six feet behind her and he’s carrying all her bags like a good man servant should. Anyhow, Avril’s trying to work her little punk rock princess look like she’s still a teenager, but she’s something like thirty years old now and it’s beginning to look a little played. Short short and some heels will remedy the situation pretty quick.

Brangelina Goes AWOL on Thanksgiving

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt did their thing on Thanksgiving. What that was, we have absolutely no idea, but it appears their kinds hung out on the beach for the holiday Angelina loathes, parents nowhere in sight. Pax, Shiloh, Zahara, Knox and Vivienne were all spotted at the beach , accompanied by their nannies on Thanksgiving. No sign of Ange or of Brad Pitt. REWRITING HISTORY : Brangelina will have none of it . Pitt did comment earlier that the family would be overseas, but did not mention specific plans. Likely because Angelina Jolie hates Thanksgiving . “Angelina Jolie hates this holiday and wants no part in rewriting history like many other Americans,” a source said of her perception of the day. “To celebrate what the white settlers did to the native Indians, the domination of one culture over another, just isn’t her style at all.” Apparently she put her money where her mouth is, at least.

Lindsay Lohan’s Sweet Denim Booty

I thought she was broke and jobless, how the hell can she afford jewelry? Oh my god! Maybe she’s finally going to ask me to marry her over Twitter …. I wouldn’t say no. Chicks can ask men to marry them, it’s not that odd. I’m so excited.

Another marijuana tunnel and two more warehouses found

20 tons of pot seized, eight arrested in San Diego and Tijuana. Reporting from San Diego — Federal authorities have unearthed another cross-border tunnel in a San Diego warehouse district, the second major tunnel discovery and multi-ton seizure of marijuana believed to be from Mexico's most powerful drug cartel in a month. The tunnel, which started in a residence in Tijuana, stretched nearly half a mile and split into two passageways, with the branches emerging at separate warehouses nearly 800 feet apart. The tunnel was within a block of a subterranean passage found three weeks ago, where authorities seized more than 25 tons of marijuana, the second-largest marijuana seizure in U.S. history. With Thursday's haul of 20 more tons, authorities said they had dealt a significant double blow to Mexican organized crime groups. The amount seized was the equivalent of about 17 million marijuana joints, said Ralph Partridge, the special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration office in San Diego. “This has a huge impact,” Partridge said. Authorities believe the drugs found in the tunnels this month belonged to separate cells of the Sinaloa drug cartel, which has long used northern Baja California as staging ground for smuggling drugs into California. The discovery on Thursday morning came after U.S. agents stopped a tractor-trailer loaded with marijuana bales that had just left a warehouse on Marconi Drive. Inside the empty warehouse space where a “For Rent” sign hung out front, agents found an opening cut into the concrete floor. They traversed the tunnel to the second opening in a warehouse a few blocks away on Via de la Amistad. To find the opening on the Tijuana side, Mexican Army soldiers traversed the entire 2,200-foot passage, which featured lighting and ventilation systems. They surfaced in the kitchen of the residence where a family lived. Authorities said six people were arrested in Mexico. “They were very surprised,” said Tim Durst, an assistant special agent from Immigration and Customs Enforcement who heads the multi-agency San Diego Tunnel Task Force. The bust culminated an eight-month investigation, built largely on tips from informants. Authorities seized four tons of marijuana in the Tijuana residence and another location in Mexico; three tons in the tunnel; and about 13 tons in the tractor trailer. Two men were arrested in California, including the driver of the tractor-trailer. The tunnel was one of the longest ever discovered and had several unique features that highlighted traffickers' evolving approach to ferrying drugs under the border. The floor of the passageway was lined with tongue-and-groove wooden boards that served as a level surface for the cart and rail system. There was an underground room, roughly 10 by 20 feet, where smugglers off-loaded the marijuana bales from the cart before hoisting them to the surface. The most unusual feature was the construction of two tunnel branches, which authorities speculate allowed smugglers alternate exit points in case of surveillance. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-tunnel-20101127,0,416000.story added by: im1mjrpain

War in Somalia’s South, Tourism in the North

By: Alex Pena While war grips the horn of Africa in Somalia’s south, a brand new industry is growing in the north – tourism. A new tourism agency in Somalia’s northern autonomous region of Somaliland called STTA (Somaliland Travel and Tourism Agency) is extending their hand out to the international community. “Come see what we have to offer,” said Abdinasir Ibrahim, Deputy Manager for STTA. The agency, which has been open for a little over a year, has been offering foreigners a glimpse into northern Somalia — a self declared independent region of 3.5 million people, and even though it has managed to find relative calm amidst a violent war in the south, the international community does not recognize it as a country. “Most people have a bad image of Somalia — the piracy, Islamic militants and the war in Mogadishu,” said Ibrahim. “When people come here, they see how people live, how they work and the peaceful situation.” Earlier this year, Somaliland made headlines for what international observers called the first free election in Somalia with over 1 million registered voters electing Ahmed M. Mohamoud Silanyo as their president. The elections were considered to have been fair with relatively low violence. “Seeing is believing,” said Ibrahim. “Once they see Somaliland, only then will they understand that we are very different.” In the one-year STTA has been open for business, they have hosted tourists from all over the world including South Africa, Hungary, Serbia and America. “We’ve had 21 American tourists come visit, and even an 82-year-old woman from Japan,” said Ibrahim. “We weren’t sure how she was going to climb the mountains, but she did.” Tourists of Somaliland can expect to explore archeological sites, but also a rugged dry and what some tourist exclaim as a beautiful coastline that is exclusive to the horn of Africa. One of the most interesting attractions in the Horn of Africa is the Laas Gaal cave paintings. The paintings are located near Hargeisa and were discovered by a French archaeological team in 2002. The Somaliland government says only few tourist have traveled to see the sites, which is why the STTA has made it part of their program. “We really enjoyed every moment of the 8-day tour and we saw many unforgettable, beautiful places in such a short time,” wrote a tourist from Spain on the companies website. “We have been to many countries; America, Europe and Asia, but Somaliland stole our hearts and we will surely come back!” One tourist from England described Somaliland as, “ a country full of hospitality and friendship, with a rich history and traditions, where we met very friendly people.” According to Raymon Gilpin, tourism and Somalia expert at the United States Institute of Peace and Associate Vice President and director of USIP’s Sustainable Economies Center of Innovation, an area like Somaliland is not quite ready for a booming tourism industry. “It has good beaches,” said Gilpin. “But that area is also tainted by piracy. At the moment, it is a diamond in the rough. You’ll have to dig deep, because there is a lot of groundwork that would be needed for a successful tourism industry in Somaliland. “ Gilpin believes there are a few issues Somaliland needs to take care of first before an industry of tourism can boom in Somalia’s north. “I think the biggest issue in context of tourism is why does somebody want to visit. They don’t want 5-star hotel, but the facilities need to give them an enjoyable and interesting stay,” he said. “I don’t see much going on in Somaliland that is preparing the recreational traveler for the experience they would call tourism. There are always curious people who will go, but if your talking tourism, there is a lot more that needs to be done.” SECURITY The STTA offices are located in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, where there is a functioning airport with security and police officers — unlike Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu that has not had a functioning central government in over 21 years. “It has institutions which are not the most robust, but they function well. Security is not 100 percent, but it is decent,” said Gilpin. “Anything in that part of the world is considered ‘risky travel’. Staying outside Hargeisa is risky and potentially dangerous, but not as dangerous as if this was being done in Puntland or Mogadishu,” he said. The U.S. Department of state says in 2007, 2008 and 2009, there were several violent kidnappings and eight assassinations in Somalia, including by suicide bombing, of staff working for international organizations. Additionally, there have been threats against Westerners in Somalia, including Somaliland. Their travel warning reads: “While Somaliland has experienced a level of stability that has not been present in other parts of Somalia, please note that the Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens against all travel to Somalia, including the self-proclaimed “Independent Republic of Somaliland” According to Ibrahim, tourists should feel safe in the capital exploring shops and places to eat on their own. Leaving the security of the capital is when it’s necessary to have armed guards, and portions of the STTA tours do venture outside that safety realm. “Fortunately we have a close relationship with the government and they offer us special security,” said Ibrahim. “We recognize that our neighbor is Somalia, and it’s just better to have the protection than to not.” Tourists can venture outside the city on what the STTA refers to as a nomadic tour, but according to Ibrahim, most guests head back to the safety of the capital. “They usually don’t like to sleep outside of Hargeisa,” he said. “Although, we are planning a 3-4 day stay outside the capital for a group coming in January.” History Somaliland was under British rule from 1884 until June 1960, when Somaliland received independence from Great Britain. Less than a month later, they joined the former Italian Somalia to form the Republic of Somalia. When the Republic of Somalia fell into a violent civil war from the 1980’s onwards, the people of the former British Somaliland held a congress in which they decided to withdraw from the union and reinstate Somaliland’s sovereignty. This was in 1991, and until this day, Somaliland has still not been recognized as a sovereign nation. added by: AlexPena
