ABC Nightline Anchor Agrees With Newsweek Columnist: Sarah Palin Owes Her Career to Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Twitter can be a very revealing place to learn about “objective” journalists. ABC Nightline anchor Terry Moran tweeted on Tuesday there was a “Great piece” by Newsweek columnist Dahlia Lithwick on the liberal site Slate.com suggesting that Sarah Palin owed her every success to the real Mama Grizzly, leftist Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who never found an abortion she wouldn’t defend. Palin was a fraud next to the real feminist. But Moran (and Lithwick) blamed their fellow liberals for not supporting a left-wing Palin figure:  In a thoughtful piece in the New York Times , Anna Holmes and Rebecca Traister argued that Democrats have given up on full-throated feminism, and in doing so have ceded the field to Palin and her clan of Grizzlies. Holmes and Traister point out the irony that it was progressives who launched Palin’s meteoric rise: “As a teen, she played basketball thanks to Title IX; as an adult, she enjoyed a professional life made possible by the involvement of her load-bearing husband Todd, entering Alaska’s governor’s mansion at 42 with four children in tow and giving birth to a fifth while there.” Democrats gave on on “full-throated feminism” as Obama plopped two hard-core female abortion advocates to the Supreme Court? That’s just odd. Lithwick didn’t include this paragraph in her article, which was the central thought of the Holmes/Traister piece:  Since the 2008 election, progressive leaders have done little to address the obvious national appetite for female leadership. And despite (or because of) their continuing obsession with Ms. Palin, they have done nothing to stop an anti-choice, pro-abstinence, socialist-bashing Tea Party enthusiast from becoming the 21st century symbol of American women in politics. ABC’s Terry Moran no doubt agrees with that sentiment, too. But Lithwick only built on the notion that Palin owes Justice Ginsburg in a major way:  To which I would just add that Palin and the Mama Grizzlies also owe a debt of thanks directly to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who almost single-handedly convinced the courts and legislatures to do away with gender classifications in matters ranging from a woman’s right to be executor of her son’s estate ( Reed v. Reed , 1970), to a female Air Force lieutenant’s right to secure housing allowances and medical benefits for her husband ( Frontiero v. Richardson , 1973), and the right of Oklahoma’s “thirsty boys” (her words) to buy beer at the Honk n’ Holler at the same age as young women ( Craig v. Boren , 1976). It was in Craig v. Boren that Ginsburg secured the court’s agreement that—in her words—the “familiar stereotype: the active boy, aggressive and assertive; the passive girl, docile and submissive” was “not fit to be written into law.” The seed for Sarah Palin was sown. And whether Palin wants women to be allowed to buy beer at 18, or 21, or not at all, the fact that the legal system doesn’t care whether you’re a woman or a man anymore changed her life. You can draw a straight line between Ginsburg’s fight against these seemingly harmless gender classifications that were rooted in seemingly harmless gender stereotypes and the Mama Grizzlies who roam our political landscape today. Those who like to believe they have picked themselves up by the bootstraps sometimes forget that they wouldn’t even have boots were it not for the women who came before. Listening to Palin, it’s almost impossible to believe that, as recently as 50 years ago, a woman at Harvard Law School could be asked by Dean Erwin Griswold to justify taking a spot that belonged to a man. In Ginsburg’s lifetime, a woman could be denied a clerkship with Felix Frankfurter just because she was a woman. Only a few decades ago, Ginsburg had to hide her second pregnancy for fear of losing tenure. I don’t have an easy answer to the question of whether real feminists are about prominent lipsticky displays of ” girl-power ,” but I do know that Ginsburg’s lifetime dedication to achieving quiet, dignified equality made such displays possible…. This is what Terry Moran calls the “hard work of real feminism,” but ignored the fringier parts of Ginsburg’s resume , like her advocacy in the 1970s for the sex-integration of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and of prisons, and of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Or her belief in a constitutional right to prostitution. Or her recent declaration to The New York Times that Medicaid should have paid for abortions since “there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of.” Lithwick concluded her ABC-endorsed “great piece” with a love pat:  Ruth Bader Ginsburg doesn’t growl and doesn’t issue threats, and she rarely eats small forest dwellers. But she is still the mother of all grizzlies to me. [Ginsburg caricature by Kerry Waghorn]

Time’s Klein: Beck a ‘Telecharlatan’ Who Will Have Hard Time Entering ‘Kingdom of Heaven’

Secular leftists in the media don’t often have use for religion, particularly Christianity, except, it seems, when biblical passages can be isolated out of context to bash religious conservatives over the head as wicked for opposing big government or for standing up for traditional moral values. Enter Joe Klein, Christian theologian extraordinaire, who suggested in Time.com Swampland blog post yesterday that Jesus would make Fox News host Glenn Beck sweat it out a bit at the pearly gates: If Jesus were around today, he might say that it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a telecharlatan to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. In a follow-up blog post from today , Klein thanked a commenter for passing along a passage from the gospel according to St. Matthew wherein Jesus taught that “when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.” “The noisy proclamation of religiosity is usually a sign of the exact opposite,” Klein preached regarding the August 28 Beck rally. Of course, the teaching Klein cited does not forbid any and all public prayer, it just points out that praying for show as a demonstration of one’s self-righteousness carries no reward with God. Either Klein doesn’t understand that principle or he does and is arguing that the Beck rally was simply a cynical, hypocritical self-righteous display. I think in context, Klein would hold to the latter. Yet in concluding his blog post, Klein seemed to attack Beck and his rally attendees for not being public enough about their religious devotion. The Time writer cited Christ’s  parable of the sheep and goats (Matthew 25:31-46) wherein Jesus pronounced blessing on those who fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and visited the imprisoned because “when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.”  “It is amazing how infrequently this sentiment is honored by the noisy righteous,” scolded Klein, citing absolutely no evidence for his assertion that the thousands in attendance at the Beck rally are not involved in their quiet lives back home in acts of charity and mercy. Perhaps Klein is alluding to the philosophical opposition Beck and other conservative have to heavy government involvement in social welfare, but if that’s the case Klein would arguably be misappropriating Jesus’s call for personal acts of charity and mercy into a call for government action towards those ends, the opposition against could be castigated as sinful and un-Christlike. At any rate, if Klein wants to play this game, doesn’t he seem a bit judgmental for a guy throwing around Jesus’s words to condemn his neighbor?

Kanye West Drops ‘Monster’ Single With Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj

Rick Ross and Bon Iver also appear on the song from West’s joint album with Jay, Watch the Throne. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Kanye West is making good on his word. The outspoken MC announced Sunday that he’ll be dropping a new track every Friday until Christmas with his “G.O.O.D. Friday” campaign. On Friday (August 27), West posted “Monster” on his KanyeUniversecity.com blog , an eclectic all-star collaboration featuring contributions from Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj. West collaborator Bon Iver also lends his folky vibe to the track. The Chi-Town lyricist tweeted that the track was the second offering from Watch the Throne, his newly-announced joint album with Jay-Z . An ominous chorus of distorted vocals opens the track just before Ricky Rozay kicks off his verse over the beat, which is a meaty slice of choppy, drum-driven boom-bap. “Bitch, I’m a monster/ No good bloodsucker/ Fat mother—-er/ Now look who’s in trouble,” Ross spits. Then Kanye enters the fray: “Gossip, gossip/ N—a, just stop it/ Everybody know/ I’m a mother—-in’ monster.” Yeezy rides the beat with several more hard-hitting, bravado-laden bars, unapologetically feeling himself as he wraps up with “My presence is a present/ Kiss my ass.” Hov abandons his typical crisp, cool lyricism and attacks his verse with a hungry, almost sinister flow. “Sasquatch, Godzilla, King Kong, Loch Ness/ Goblin, ghoul, a zombie with no conscience/ Question: What do these things all have in common?/ Everybody knows I’m a mother—-in’ monster,” Jay rhymes. Although the track surfaced the same day Minaj tweeted about supposedly marrying Drake , the Young Money Barbie shows no signs of possibly being mellowed by a relationship, delivering a collection of punch lines buoyed by her trademark energy. “Pull up in a monster/ Automobile gangsta/ With a bad bitch that came from Sri Lanka/ Yeah, I’m in that Tonka/ Color of Willie Wonka/ You can be the king but watch the queen conquer,” Minaj rhymes. Levi Johnston Recants Apology to Palins, CBS Rewards with Four-Minute ‘Exclusive’

Continuing their obsession with the credibility-challenged Levi Johnston, whose sole claim to fame is his continuing ability to exploit his relationship with Sarah Palin’s daughter, Bristol, CBS’s The Early Show on Friday devoted more than four minutes to an “exclusive” interview with the “reality star” and how he now recants his apology for lying about the Palins in previous interviews. To her credit, correspondent Betty Nguyen challenged Johnston’s openly frivolous approach to running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (a stunt concocted for a reality show) and whether his temporary apology was “honest” (he said it was “something I did to make my fiancee happy”). But CBS has shown a particular fetish for publicizing Johnston’s antics, especially his slams of Sarah Palin. Back in July, NewsBusters’ Kyle Drennen documented five lengthy Early Show features of Johnston, including two “exclusive” interviews, one of which aired over two days. Always, CBS touted the anti-Sarah Palin angle, as they did again today with the on-screen headline: “Levi’s Regrets; Johnston Sorry He Made Palin Apology.” As for Johnston himself, he ludicrously claimed that his interest in running for mayor of Wasilla was completely independent of the fact that it used to be Sarah Palin’s job (“I don’t care what she did or where she was at. I’m doing it because I want to”). And, just weeks after he apologized for lying about the Palin’s, he insisted that everything he’s said is true: “The only thing I wish I wouldn’t have done is put out that apology. Because it kind of makes me sound like a liar. And I’ve never lied about anything.” The only thing less credible than that is the notion that CBS is repeatedly showcasing this publicity hound for any reason other than to embarrass Sarah Palin and diminish her political clout. Here’s the transcript of the August 27 segment: 7am tease: ERICA HILL: Not sorry. In an exclusive Early Show interview, Levi Johnston opens up and says he now regrets apologizing to Sarah Palin. CLIP OF LEVI JOHNSTON: The only thing I wish I wouldn’t have done is put out that apology because it kind of makes me sound like a liar. 7:30am: ERICA HILL: First, though, we want to bring you this. You’re about to see a whole lot more of Levi Johnston, it turn out. That’s because the father of Sarah Palin’s grandson is now shooting his own reality show. He’s also, of course, running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. Just how does he plan on pulling it all off? He talked about that and much more in an exclusive Early Show interview with CBS News correspondent Betty Nguyen. LEVI JOHNSTON, walking on a sidewalk next to Betty Nguyen: If I do win, then we’ll have to give Hollywood up for three years. BETTY NGUYEN: For now, Levi Johnston isn’t giving up the Hollywood spotlight. He got his first taste of fame during the 2008 Republican Convention when introduced as father of Bristol Palin’s baby. He’s now looking to extend his 15 minutes with a new reality show, featuring his attempt at Wasilla’s top job. [to Johnston] Do you think you’re going to win? JOHNSTON: I do, I do. NGUYEN: Why? You’ve never run for a political office before. You don’t have a high school diploma. What are your qualifications to become mayor of Wasilla? JOHNSTON: I really don’t think it’s, mayor is about qualifications. It’s really about, you know, the people liking you and believing in you. NGUYEN: But you make it sound like it’s a popularity contest. Running for mayor, that office is a serious job. JOHNSTON: Well, it’s definitely serious. You know, obviously, you want people’s votes. At the end of the day, it is kind of a popularity. Like, whoever — you know, the people love most they’ll vote for. NGUYEN: You’re well aware that Sarah Palin used to once hold that office. Did that factor in at all as to you choosing to run for mayor? JOHNSTON: I don’t care what she did or where she was at. I’m doing it because I want to. NGUYEN: Johnston and Bristol Palin announced their engagement in an “Us” weekly magazine spread last month, but just one week later it was called off after Bristol felt he was mocking her family in a music video. [to Johnston] What caused you to break off the last engagement? JOHNSTON: It was just miserable for the both of us, you know. I mean, we were constantly fighting, just trying to make it work for Tripp. It just wasn’t the right thing to do. NGUYEN: Bristol now appears to be moving on with her life. New reports say she’s signing on for her own shot at stardom. [to Johnston] I hear that she’s doing Dancing with the Stars — is that true? JOHNSTON: I recently heard that, yeah. Great. Go for it. NGUYEN: In an interview with People magazine, it was Bristol who accused Levi of ruining their relationship with his hunger for fame. [to Johnson] Bristol said that you’re obsessed with the limelight and that she was played. Is that true? JOHNSTON: I don’t think I’m any more obsessed with making a career out of this than she is. Obviously, she’s doing Dancing with the Stars. NGUYEN: You’ve posed for Playgirl, participated in a music video, now a reality show. Are you obsessed with the limelight? JOHNSTON: I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed with it. I’m just taking opportunities as they come. NGUYEN: For the past year and a half, Levi has been engaged in a public spat with Bristol’s mom, Sarah Palin, including a scathing interview published in Vanity Fair. Earlier this month, Levi publicly apologized. [to Johnston] You’ve apologized, in fact, to the Palin family, saying: “I hope to one day restore your trust.” Was that an honest apology? Do you still feel that way? JOHNSTON: That was something I did to make my fiancee happy. You know, she wanted it, so we wrote something down and we sent it out because that’s what she wanted. NGUYEN: “We wrote it down” — did she write it, or did you write it? JOHNSTON: Well, I’m not going to get into all that, but I’m just going to say, together we put it out there. NGUYEN: Well, why would you say something that’s not true if it wasn’t true? JOHNSTON: Trust me, it’s easier to make them happy, I’m telling you. You’ve got to live with them, you’ve got to make them happy. NGUYEN: Do you have any regrets? JOHNSTON: I don’t really regret anything, but the only thing I wish I wouldn’t have done is put out that apology. Because it kind of makes me sound like a liar. And I’ve never lied about anything. The rest of the stuff I can live with. NGUYEN: Betty Nguyen, CBS News, Los Angeles. HILL: Levi says he is done with marriage, at least for now, but does still hope to have more children in the future. In the meantime, he is working on earning his high school diploma and getting a team in place to advise him on just what it takes to run a city, in case he’s elected.

Lindsay Lohan Tweets For First Time Since Rehab

Actress blasts paparazzi in her return to Twitter. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images After a fairly rough summer, Lindsay Lohan is getting back into the swing of things. The actress, who left rehab Tuesday after spending 23 days in court-ordered treatment, has returned to Twitter . In her first tweet as a free woman, Lohan targeted some familiar foes: paparazzi. “Clearly.. Paparazzi shouldn’t be allowed to take pictures or video while someone’s driving or at a stop light. 4every1’s sake #trafficpolice,” the starlet tweeted Thursday (August 26). Just like her constantly changing hair color and shenanigans behind the wheel, Lohan’s run-ins with photogs have marked her years in an unrelenting spotlight. A car crash that Lohan claimed was the fault of an overzealous snapper partly inspired a California law aimed at cracking down on eager paparazzi. In her return to the social-networking site, Lohan appears to have revisited her tradition of oversharing and antagonizing others via the Web. The actress’ turbulent relationship with ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson played out in front of millions of viral fans, with both ladies typing swipes at each other. More recently, bawdy comedienne Joan Rivers went after Lohan on Twitter before the actress began her stint in jail. Lohan has also blasted her publicity-hungry father, Michael, on the site as well. Even if Lohan has taken up her viral antics once again, many have hope the actress can bounce back from her recent troubles. “I feel like people in the film industry are rooting for her,” film critic Ryan Gilbey recently told MTV News . “[Director Quentin] Tarantino has been saying great, supportive things about her and how brilliant she’s in this movie he’s produced [‘Machete’].” Indeed, her “Machete” co-stars have been beaming about Lohan’s performance in the flick. “I wish her all the best. I mean, she’s a talented young actress,” Cheech Marin told MTV News at the film’s premiere. “Hopefully, she won’t let her personal life overwhelm her professional life. … At some point, you gotta be responsible.” “She’s so good in this movie,” Jessica Alba added of “Machete.” “I can’t wait for people to see [her in] it.” Are you happy Lindsay Lohan is tweeting again? Eminem’s Recovery Holds On To #1 Billboard Slot

Rapper retains his position despite four new names in top five. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images How strong is Eminem ‘s run at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart? In addition to locking down the #1 spot for seven out of the nine weeks since its release, Slim Shady will manage to hold his perch next week despite a rush of four new titles debuting in the top five. The rapper, who was just added to the roster of performers at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards , will keep his pole position again thanks to sales of 116,000, which pushed his to-date total above the 2.2 million mark, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. He also fended off four contenders, led by R&B singer Kem , whose Intimacy was well behind at #2 (74,000), followed by the latest from sandpaper-voiced singer Ray LaMontagne and his band the Pariah Dogs , God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise (#3, 64,000), metal icons Iron Maiden with Final Frontier (#4, 63,000) and country singer Trace Adkins ‘ Cowboy’s Back in Town (#5, 50,000). The rest of the top 10: Lady Antebellum , Need You Now (#6, 32,000); the former #1 album from Arcade Fire , Suburbs , which dropped five spots to #7 on sales of 31,000 for a three-week total nearing 250,000; Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#8, 30,000); the debut of mellow singer David Gray ‘s Foundling (#9, 25,000); and another new face, rock legend-turned-dustbowl-balladeer John Mellencamp ‘s No Better Than This (#10, 24,000). The Camp Rock 2 soundtrack had a short stay in the top 10, as it fell 10 spots in week two to #13 (23,000), while VMA-nominated Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More continued a march up the charts, scooting up one to #19 as sales picked up by nearly 20 percent to 17,000. And Hey Monday landed at #25 with their latest, Beneath It All (14,000). After weeks of domination of the iTunes singles chart, Eminem’s iron grip was finally broken this week by (who else?) Lil Wayne. The incarcerated rapper’s “Right Above It” collabo with Drake took over the #1 spot, pushing Em’s Rihanna hookup, “Love the Way You Lie,” to #4, as Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” hung in at the #2 spot right in front of Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” Breaking into the chart this week was Nelly with “Just a Dream” at #7. Though iTunes does not release specific sales data, suffice it to say that Em held the top spot on the album tally again, followed by LaMontagne, a Lady Antebellum iTunes session, Arcade Fire, Gray, Mumford & Sons, Antebellum’s resurgent Need You Now, the chart debut of Maroon 5’s Hands All Over, Kem, and Maiden. He’s been the chart champ most of the summer (save for bumps by Arcade Fire and Avenged Sevenfold ), but it looks like Eminem’s Billboard domination could end for good with the release of Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream, the highly anticipated second album from the singer that has already spawned two massive hits. Also vying for the top is the third effort from former “American Idol” champ Fantasia , and an Usher remix/deluxe repackaging of Raymond v. Raymond called Versus. Related Artists Eminem

Hungry Bears in Yellowstone Coming into Conflict with People

Image credit: Aaron Villescas /Flickr Typically, warm winters make life easier for wildlife. In Yellowstone National Park, however, a string of unusually mild winters has allowed a beetle to strip the region of whitebark pine trees —which are an essential source of protein for the park’s bears. Now, as the undernourished bears struggle to prepare for hibernation, their search for food is increasingly leading them into contact with humans, often with devastating results….
