Jay-Z ‘Bothered’ By Plight Of Undereducated Youth

‘They can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money,’ Hov tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Jay-Z Photo: MTV News It is Jay-Z ‘s competitive spirit that has made him one of the best rappers of all time as well as one of hip-hop’s most successful businesspeople. However, when it comes to his charitable efforts, Hov is driven by something very different: his desire to share his wealth of experience with the world. “You’ve been blessed. Your talent has taken you to places you never thought you would see. I just think as a compassionate human being, you want people to see,” Jay told MTV News before describing the first time he saw Italy. Hov, who was amazed with his own early travels abroad, called an old friend and urged him to “pack a bag” because he simple had to see Italy. On December 8, the God MC announced that he would be playing two benefit shows at New York’s Carnegie Hall , the proceeds from which will go to the United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. The money raised will help put low-income NYC students in a position to attend college. Back in September, the Shawn Carter Foundation threw a fundraising carnival on the west side of Manhattan where celebrity guests like New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez and pitcher C.C. Sabathia bought high-priced tickets to help Hov’s cause. All the Watch the Throne MC wants to do is create an opportunity. To help illustrate his interest in helping to educate young people, Jay quoted a line from the final scene of the 1993 Robert De Niro film “A Bronx Tale”: “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent.” “That really bothers me, someone who really applies themselves and wants to go and they can’t further their education because of their situation, because of money or because they have to stay in the house to watch their [siblings],” Jay told MTV News. “Something about that really bothers me.” Jay and his mother, Gloria Carter, started the Shawn Carter foundation in 2002 to help those facing socioeconomic difficulties further their education at institutions of higher learning. The foundation started with one student earning a full ride through college and grew to offer 50 scholarships to students in 50 different states annually. To date, more than 750 students have been awarded scholarships totaling in excess of $1.3 million. Tickets for the Carnegie Hall shows, which will take place on February 6 and 7, will be sold privately and priced at a premium rate, fetching anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to raise a significant pot of money for the charity. Regular fans aren’t completely shut out though. On January 30, a number of reasonably priced tickets will go on sale to the public. The publicly sold seats are being released close to the concert date in hopes of curtailing scalping. “We’re not just doing a show for the sake of it,” Hov said. “For all these years, [the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation has] been really grassroots. My mom has been getting on the bus herself and taking kids to orientation and doing this work by herself. Now … we’re building this thing out.” Related Artists Jay-Z

Martha Stewart on Daughter’s Scathing Memoir: Hilarious!

Martha Stewart was a demanding mother who forced her child to wrap her own presents and often pees with the door open . So daughter Alexis has revealed in a new memoir, “Whateverland: Learning to Live Here.” How does the domestic guru feel about this book’s release? Just fine, thanks, she said today on the Hallmark Channel’s Martha . “How many Google alerts have I gotten in the last couple days?” Martha joked on-air, adding that she read the book “a month and a half ago… It is hilarious [and] enlightening.” Alexis has backed off statements made in the tell-all a bit, saying to Us Weekly that many are an “exaggeration of the truth.” But, regardless, Martha says she has nothing to be ashamed of: “I must have instilled in her some good habits. She’s tall, beautiful, gorgeous and mother of baby Jude and that’s all that counts. The book is out late October wherever books are sold. I encourage you to buy it, read and make it a best seller.”

Martha Stewart: Slammed by Daughter in New Book

She claims to be the perfect homemaker, but a new book calls into question Martha Stewart as a perfect mother. And the author of this book? Martha’s daughter, Alexis. The 46-year old slams her famous parent in “Whateverland: Learning to Live Here,” writing of her childhood: “If I didn’t do something perfectly, I had to do it again. I grew up with a glue gun pointed at my head.” Labeling the domestic television goddess as “not interesting in being kid-friendly,” Alexis goes into detail about Martha’s Christmas present philosophy (“”She used to make me wrap my own presents…”) and hypocritical shoe removal demands. “My mother has a sign on all of her doors to take your shoes off,” Alexis writes. “For god’s sake! My mother’s dogs p–s and s–t on her rugs and she’s telling people to take their shoes off?” Alexis also crosses the TMI line with this entry: “[She] always peed with the door open. I remember saying, ‘You know, now I have friends over! You can’t do that anymore! It’s gotta stop! My friends’ parents don’t do it! Give me a break here! I don’t feel like being embarrassed! It’s exhausting! I’m a kid! Stop!'” Still, despite this randomly published complaints, Alexis actually dedicates the memoir to her mother and says there are no hard feelings. Martha apparently agrees, saying of her child: “She’s her own person. She makes up her own mind.”

Jay-Z Throws A Carnival For College Kids’ Scholarships

Jay’s foundation set up the Ferris wheel in New York on Thursday to raise funds for university-bound students’ scholarships. By Steven Roberts with reporting by Rob Markman Jay-Z at “Making The Ordinary Extraordinary” in New York City Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage NEW YORK — On Thursday night, Jay-Z hosted a carnival at the Hudson River Park pier for his Shawn Carter Foundation . But it wasn’t all Ferris wheels and funnel cakes — unfortunately Momofuku doesn’t make those. The event was called Making Ordinary Extraordinary, and it sought to raise funds for college scholarships. MTV News caught up with Mr. Carter at the event, where he said the evening was about having fun while raising money for a good cause. Jay said two of the worst things in life are a waste of talent and a person who applies him- or herself but is unable to advance due to financial hardship. He hoped this foundation would help ease such burdens and assist people in recognizing their potential. “Just providing opportunity and seeing what people do with that opportunity. If you want to go further and you want to further your education, just giving someone that extra little push [so] that maybe you’ll turn out to be someone special,” Jay said. Jay and his mother, Gloria Carter, started the foundation in 2002 to help those facing socioeconomic difficulties further their education at institutions of higher learning. The foundation started with one student earning a full ride through college and grew to offer 50 scholarships to students in 50 different states annually from 2003 to 2005. More than 750 students have been awarded scholarships totaling in excess of $1.1 million, and nearly 500 kids have taken part in the foundation’s college tours — some even rode the bus with Jay’s mom. “My mom has been running this for a number of years,” said Jay. “My mom gets on the bus and takes the kids and takes them to their orientations and she’s been riding around the college. It’s a real grassroots thing that she’s been doing on her own, and I’m just really trying to help her expand it so we can help more people. It started out as a Brooklyn thing, and then it started as a New York thing, and now hopefully we can take it to a worldwide thing.” Related Artists Jay-Z

Relationship Seasons

By Jay Levin Every relationship has its springtime; then winter rolls around. Winter can come in a few days, a few weeks, or a few months but, with rare exception, it sure does come. This may seem to happen for a variety of reasons – everyone has a story about why a given relationship didn’t work out – and we tend to buy into these stories. There is, however, a bigger truth at work than these narratives. In reality, winter in relationships happens for one big reason: Very few people are trained in relationship skills. Worse, most of us deal with conflicts and tensions in relationships by relying on coping mechanisms and patterns learned in childhood and teenage years – and in most cases these patterns are actually disruptive of relationships, when not  absolutely destructive of them. This is easily remedied by two things.  One is professional Life and Couples coaching .  The other is an absolute willingness on your part to become a student of effective relationship skills and of the healthy way to understand and approach relationship that a coach like myself will impart to you. It doesn’t matter the current stage or pattern of your relationships. You can be at the early dating stage, you can have experienced a lot of failed short term relationships or affairs, you can be with someone for months or years. What matters is this: If you want to have a great relationship that endures past the early romantic, sexual phase, you need to learn modern relationship skills in order to gain and keep real closeness to one another. This learning doesn’t come automatically– it can take tens of years of trial and error and ups and downs in relationships to figure it out – and that’s why Life and Couples coaching is booming. Why takes a trillion years to accomplish a state of partnership satisfaction when, given modern research and knowledge, you can learn your way into a great relationship in a few weeks to a few months, depending on how actively you apply yourself? First, you must learn an alternative to blaming your partner or yourself.  You must be accountable for your actions and get out of “the blame game.” Blaming others doesn’t solve anything.  Instead, it is important to understand why you and your partner feel and behave the way you do when challenges arise- and then learn how to resolve problems in a mature manner. Second, arguments and disagreements can actually be resolved after you have been taught some superb and easily-learned methods to deal with them.  Simply learning the techniques for creating agreement and closeness provides so much confidence that it is much easier when a challenge arises for you not to go into reaction and to take a moment instead to think about the situation rather than say or do something that will make matters worse. Third, keeping agreements is still another core principle.  Better to go back and renegotiate even the simplest agreement – “I will wash the dishes tonight” – than break trust. Fourth, open communications are essential to prevent each person wondering what’s happening with her or his partner – a gap most of us tend to fill with projections, worries and fantasies. While there is considerably more than these four principles to learn, a smart basic way to approach working with a Life and Couples coach is to start by accepting the real world truth – which is that most relationship difficulties, from the early dating stage on, are caused by the tension and misunderstanding created by two people who simply don’t know (because they haven’t yet been taught) how to make the other person feel safe EVEN while retaining their own autonomy. Life and Couples Coaching can teach you that and much more. It can take you way past resentments and tensions. It can help you and your partner get out of your own ways and each other’s way so that you are each relating from a place of authentic self and tremendous acceptance. It can, in fact, get you to an exquisite state of existence of a sort you may only have had hints of in your life. It does this by showing you what needs to be changed and how to make those needed changes almost painlessly. We all sometimes need good teachers and good guidance to take us past the “flaws” we think we and our partners have that show up in relationships.  A skilled Life and Couples coach can be the ideal person to turn to in times of turmoil, because that’s how you can discover that such flaws almost always result only from everyone’s backwards original education in the most crucial of human experiences – in how we are to relate to each other. By contrast, a Life and Couples coach like myself can teach you truly effective, very neat and satisfying relating skills.  For most people, the sooner you learn, the sooner your relationship and life can improve. *** Jay Levin is best known as the founder of the LA Weekly, of which he was editor-in-chief and president for many years before selling what he had grown to be the largest and most successful city weekly in the country. Toddlers & Tiaras Reaches a New Low

Toddlers & Tiaras is a show on TLC that focuses on parents who dress their children up in ridiculous outfits, force them to learn a talent and then pressure them to perform in tyke-based beauty pageants around the country. In other words: there’s very little high ground to be found anywhere on this series. Yet the reality program has still managed to reach a new low, airing a promo this week that focuses on Paisley, A THREE-YEAR OLD CONTESTANT, who is dressed like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman , i.e. a prostitute. Toddlers & Tiaras Promo Rages the Parents Television Council in response: “We have a serious problem when a network formerly known as The Learning Channel features a toddler, who probably hasn’t even learned to read, dressed as a prostitute showing off her sexy strut. “For years we’ve seen adult sexuality being inappropriately and aggressively foisted on innocent young children, but children today are being sexualized at younger and younger ages. All available data suggests they will suffer for it later in life.” What do you think of this crude get-up?
