A n 83-year-old man is living proof that it’s never too late to bring your goals to fruition. After dropping out of school in the sixth grade, Vietnam War veteran Johnnie Jones received his doctorate degree on Friday from Louisiana State University, WFAB reported. On Friday, the 83-year-old will receive his doctorate in social work at LSU. He hopes to begin law school next fall. https://t.co/tkgSBnSflK — The Advocate (@theadvocatebr) December 11, 2018 The milestone was historic as he became the eldest student to receive a graduate degree during a fall commencement at the school and the oldest Black person to ever receive an LSU degree. When he was 18 years old, Jones joined the Marine Corps. While deployed in Vietnam he decided that he wanted to get back on track with his education. He noticed that individuals who had high school diplomas and college degrees were getting better employment opportunities. After earning his diploma, he took junior college classes and was then able to take advantage of a program offered by Louisiana State University while serving. After retiring from the military in 1973 he got his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Hawaii and went on to pursue his master’s degree at LSU. While chasing after his academic goals he worked at a restaurant and later as a warden at the Louisiana Department of Corrections to support his family. Although he has several degrees under his belt, he doesn’t intend on stopping his academic journey anytime soon. He plans on starting law school next fall. “Age is an artificial constraint. There’s nothing magical about 65, 75, 95, 105. Your behavior, your activities should be guided by your physical fitness and your mental fitness,” he told The Advocate . “We’ve been so socialized to believe that once you hit a certain age, I’ve done my thing, so I’m going to sit back and enjoy life. OK, if that’s your thing, that’s your thing. But to me, age doesn’t mean that much. Actor Al Matthews, best known for his memorable role in the film Aliens , has died. The iconic actor had retired to Spain, which is where he passed away. He was 75. 75-year-old Al Matthews passed away at his home, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais . Matthews’ home was located in Orihuela Costa, in the Spanish Mediterranean province of Alicante. He had retired to Spain in 2005. Responders found Matthews when a neighbor called emergency services. An autopsy is expected for the late actor. Matthews is, of course, best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Apone in James Cameron’s 1986 classic, Aliens . In the science fiction film, he starred alongside living legend Sigourney Weaver. He delivered a truly famous line. “Alright sweethearts, what are you waiting for, breakfast in bed? A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm,” he said on screen. The quote continues: “Every meal’s a banquet! Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation a parade! I love the corps!” That may have been Matthews’ most famous role, but was far from the only one. In fact, he appeared in over 30 films. Matthews portrayed a fire chief in Superman III . He played General Tudor in the cult classic The Fifth Element . He also enjoyed success in the United Kingdom, where he had a role on the UK series, Grange Hill . And speaking of his work across the pond, in 1975, his song, “Fool,” reached #16 on the UK Singles chart. Despite his retirement, Matthews reprised his legendary role as Sgt. Apone in the 2013 video game, Aliens: Colonial Marines . Perhaps part of what made Matthews’ role in Aliens so iconic and powerful — aside from his acting skills — was that he had been a real life marine in Vietnam. “I spent six years in the United States Marine Corps;” Matthews shared on his personal website. “I hold thirteen combat awards and decorations, including two purple hearts.” He reveals: “I was the first black Marine in the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of sergeant.” That is one hell of an achievement. His website blurb concludes: “I served with Kilo Battery, Fourth Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, of that I am very proud.” Rest in peace, Al Matthews. In Marie Claire , gushes over her marriage to Kris Humphries. And now in Men’s Health, Kutcher talks about relationships in general. “I could never be with a woman who felt like she needed to change me,” says the now-single actor , adding: “The goal is not to get into a relationship; the goal is to be in a relationship.” Kutcher does admit to one fault, at least, although it had nothing to do with his philandering ways. “I would just like a woman someday, somewhere, at some point in my life to say to me, ‘You’re a great listener,'” he says. “Haven’t heard it yet, and that’s a superior compliment to get from a woman. Kristin Cavallari served the United States of America proudly last night. The former Hills star looked stunning as she attended a Marine Corps ball in Temecula, Calif., with Lance Cpl. Jonathan Burkett, who asked her out on Twitter! Here’s the happy pair at the event, in a photo obtained by TMZ … Like Justin Timberlake , who attended one last weekend (there are many Marine Corps balls across the U.S.), Kristin Cavallari was reportedly the best date ever, humble but outgoing, and taking pictures with anybody who asked. She didn’t try to pull an early exit, either, staying until after they shut the place down. Burkett said of this season’s Dancing With the Stars contestant: “[Kristin] was awesome for sure.
