Amy Winehouse Dead; Found in London Home

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her apartment in London today. Multiple sources confirm that the singer is the woman in this press release from the Metropolitan Police, which doesn’t specifically name her: “Police were called by Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 just before 16 hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman deceased.” “On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death.” “At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.” Amy Winehouse famously battled serious addiction to hard drugs and alcohol and was in and out of rehab several times throughout the years. Winehouse shot to fame with the 2006 album Back to Black , whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop won five Grammys and made her a star. Unfortunately, a turbulent marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil and overall self-destructive habits overshadowed her distinctive talent in the years since. Tabloids and the public became riveted by her erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics, her performances increasingly rambling, stumbling train wrecks – and cause for concern. Just last month, Winehouse canceled her upcoming European tour after an awful performance in Serbia where she seemed completely out of it. Sadly, this story is almost shocking because it is not shocking. Her talent will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace. UPDATE : There were no signs of foul play in the death of Winehouse, Scotland Yard reports. It is still too early to determine cause of death. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow.

WikiLeaks hackers threaten British Government

An army of computer hackers is planning to bring down British government websites if Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, is extradited to Sweden. The 1,500-strong network of online activists has already sabotaged the websites of MasterCard, Visa and the Swedish government with millions of bogus visits. The attacks, termed “Operation Payback”, came after the credit card companies and PayPal, an online payment firm, announced that they would no longer process donations to the anti-secrecy organisation. The group of hackers, called Anonymous, said it would target British government websites if Mr Assange was extradited to Sweden, where he is wanted over allegations of sexual assault. Gregg Housh, an American internet activist who previously worked with the hackers, said: “They will go after the weakest links, because they want to see results. They will probably test a few sites and then decide.” The hackers said they were planning to target Amazon, the online retailer. A message posted on their Twitter account yesterday stated: “Target: wwwdotAmazondotcom locked on!!!”. Mr Assange was arrested by the Metropolitan Police’s extradition squad earlier this week after Swedish prosecutors issued an international arrest warrant. He is due to appear before City of Westminster magistrate’s court on Tuesday, where his lawyers will attempt to secure his release on bail. He has been accused by two women of one count of rape, two of sexual molestation and one of unlawful coercion. He denies the allegations and says that the sex was consensual. One of the hackers said: “It is definitely an information war. The core principle behind it is [that] information is free, governments keep information to themselves, WikiLeaks releases it to the general public and the war occurs.” The hackers’ actions so far have been essentially attacks by volume, known as DDoS, or distributed denial of service, in which the target site is hit with increased numbers of visitors with the intention of exceeding its capabilities and forcing it to crash. In this case, hundreds of volunteers have downloaded something called a botnet, which aids the distribution of the command to attack the site. The volunteer hackers wait until they are given a signal on an internet chat room, before launching the attack. The attacks are illegal in Britain and carry a maximum sentence of two years. A spokesman for PayPal insisted that, despite the attack, the site had not been disrupted. “As far as we are aware there hasn’t been any further impact on the site.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8193210/WikiLeaks-hackers-th… added by: ras_menelik

Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange Arrested!

The founder of the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been arrested by the Metropolitan Police in London, England. Mr Assange, the 39 year old Australian, denies all of the allegations, claiming the charges are part of an effort to silence and discredit the whistle-blower organization. He is due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court later. Mr Assange is accused by the Swedish authorities of one count of unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation and one count of rape, all alleged to have been committed in August 2010. The arrest took place before a Wikileaks planned release of documents on Bank of America. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11937110 added by: H3ADLINE

British police know Assange’s location, await arrest orders: report

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, is in Great Britain and police there are waiting to be given the order to arrest him, the Independent reports. Despite accusations that Julian Assange is on the run, The Independent has learnt that Scotland Yard has known his whereabouts for more than a month but has yet to receive official instructions to arrest him…. [T]he 39-year-old Australian supplied the Metropolitan Police with contact details upon arriving in the UK in October. Police sources confirmed that they have a telephone number for Mr Assange and are fully aware of where he is staying. Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) has received the so-called “red notice” – an international arrest warrant – but has so far refused to authorise the arrest of Mr Assange, who is thought to be in South-east England. Until it does, police forces cannot act. Earlier this week, Interpol issued an international arrest warrant for Assange, who is wanted in a sex assault investigation in Sweden. The investigation stems from allegations by two women who accuse Assange of sexual impropriety, something the WikiLeaks founder strongly denies. Sweden issued, then dropped an arrest warrant against Assange in August, around the time that WikiLeaks released US documents related to Iraq. Another Swedish prosecutor then reopened the case. Last week, ahead of the release of the State Department cables, a Swedish prosecutor ordered Assange be detained. Interpol issued an international arrest warrant on the basis of that order. No charges have been laid against Assange. Assange, who says he had consensual sex with the two complainants, has said he believes the sex assault claims are an attempt to discredit him and his whistleblower website. He has speculated that the Pentagon may be behind the accusation. He has also suggested that US lawmakers will attempt to criminalize his organization. US Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday the US is actively pursuing a criminal investigation of Assange, to see if he has broken any US laws. A Republican lawmaker has called on the US to declare WikiLeaks a “terrorist organization.” The Independent reports British police have delayed arresting Assange for “technical” reasons, suggesting an arrest will be imminent once concerns over the international warrant's details are worked out. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/12/british-police-await-orders-arrest-assange/ added by: Miguel_Teixeira

New York City Inks Contract for Up to 475 Compressed Natural Gas Buses

Photo: New Flyer What’s the Difference Between CNG and Diesel? The Board of the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (the “MTA”) has awarded New Flyer of America a contract for up to 475 buses. The contract is for 135 40-foot compressed natural gas (“CNG”) heavy-duty transit buses with options for up to an additional 340 CNG buses. We know that buses are a pretty green way to move lots of people around in urban area, but how much better are CNG buses compared to regular diesel buses? The U.S. Department of Energy has some numbers to allow us to compare…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Billionaire Who Denies Connection to Tea Parties Bankrolls Tea-Partying Glenn Beck Fans

David Koch, billionaire backer of the Tea Party movement, says he's never been to a Tea Party event. So, what do you call the conference full of Tea Partiers he just convened? August 29, 2010|WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a darkened hotel ballroom, on the eve of Glenn Beck's burlesque of self-righteousness at the Lincoln Memorial, some 2,500 activists listened politely to the tall, impeccably dressed elder at the podium as he stumbled through his introduction of the evening's guest of honor, the conservative columnist George Will. The speaker was introduced simply as chairman of the board of the Americans For Prosperity Foundation, the organization that sponsored the event. Few among the rank-and-file recognized the billionaire David Koch — heir to the fortunes of Koch Industries — or knew him as the man who bankrolls their activism, whose largess subsidized many of their trips to the nation's capital to take part in AFPF's organizing conference, and the Beck rally the following day. Beck, you'll recall, is in the employ of the billionaire Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation (the parent company of Fox News and the Wall Street Journal) has been in cahoots, as AlterNet reported( http://www.alternet.org/news/142068/utilizing_public_airwaves,_media_mogul_murdo… ), with Kochs' AFPF since the inception of the Tea Party movement. Koch's halting public speaking style befits his usual reluctance in recent years to interact with the public. He prefers to be known as the philanthropic presence behind the great institutions of New York: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History and the New York City Ballet. Indeed, he made his entrance to the stage at the AFPF banquet to the strains of “New York, New York,” which seemed a bit out of place in a room filled with the sounds of Southern drawls and Midwestern twangs. But over the course of the past year, Koch has earned a new reputation, one he's not keen to have: the Daddy Warbucks of the Tea Party movement. As AlterNet first reported last year, the two main astroturf groups responsible for organizing Tea Party supporters into a national movement were both founded by Koch: Americans For Prosperity, presided over by Tim Phillips, the former business partner of Ralph Reed; and FreedomWorks, which is chaired by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey. Both FreedomWorks and Americans For Prosperity have their roots in a now-defunct Koch-funded group, Citizens for a Sound Economy. While Koch is actively involved in Americans For Prosperity, his spokesperson claims no current relationship with FreedomWorks, or, incredibly, with the Tea Party movement. Last spring, on the eve of the April 15 Tax Day Tea Party protests, Koch Industries spokesperson Melissa Cohlmia sent an unsolicited statement( http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/04/right-wing_backers_koch_indust… ) to reporters and bloggers, asserting that “Koch companies, the Koch foundations, Charles Koch and David Koch have no ties to and have never given money to FreedomWorks. In addition, no funding has been provided by Koch companies, the Koch foundations, Charles Koch or David Koch specifically to support the tea parties. Thanks for your consideration.” “I’ve never been to a Tea Party event,” David Koch told New York magazine's Andrew Goldman( http://nymag.com/news/features/67285/ ) earlier this year. “No one representing the Tea Party has ever even approached me.” added by: toyotabedzrock

NY Times Loses Its Distaste for Religion As Houston Churches Push Amnesty for Illegals

Last Friday, the New York Times continued its front-page hammering of Pope Benedict as sharing the blame for the scandalous child sex abuse cases brought against priests. On Tuesday, the Times led with a story on the alleged scandal of the United States giving tax breaks for donations to strengthen Jewish settlements in the West Bank that Obama doesn’t approve of. So when the paper suddenly starts showing deference to religion in politics, it’s a giveaway that a plea in aid of an unlabeled liberal cause will soon follow. The Times continues to push for amnesty for illegal immigration by providing gross overexposure to pro-illegal immigrant protests and marches that function as press releases for the pro-amnesty position. On Monday, Texas-based reporter James McKinley Jr. brought in “an unusual display of ecumenical solidarity.” ” Many Churches, One Plea — Houston’s Clergy United to Urge Support for Immigration Reform .” McKinley lets a minister ramble in Marxist fashion: The Rev. John W. Bowie knows it is hard to sell the people in his neighborhood on the idea that they should support changing immigration laws to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. His church lies in one of the oldest black settlements in the city, where unemployment is high and many people see immigrants as competitors for jobs. Yet there he was in the pulpit at True Light Missionary Baptist Church on the Fourth of July, with a full choir behind him, urging his flock to support an overhaul of immigration laws that “lets the undocumented come out of the shadows.” “All 13 colonies were made up of illegal aliens because they had not gotten permission from the residents here, who were the Indians,” he said. “Then a few years later, they brought us here and made us illegal, too. These immigrants, we immigrants, have built the greatest nation in the world, coming from everywhere, all over, because, you see, nobody owns this world except God.” All over Houston, in an unusual display of ecumenical solidarity on an explosive issue, scores of pastors, priests, rabbis and ministers used their sermons on Independence Day to promote the cause of fixing a broken immigration system. The coordinated effort was part of a broad-based campaign begun in January by an interfaith group, the Metropolitan Organization, to lobby Congress to pass an immigration overhaul package this year. The group has collected 12,000 signatures to be sent to lawmakers and has organized workshops to persuade churchgoers to support their effort. McKinley didn’t find any “liberals” on the pro-amnesty side, but managed to identify opponents of immigration “reform” as “conservative” and “right-wing.” Many clergy members say they face an uphill battle with their congregations, some of which tend to be conservative on social issues and regard immigrants without visas as lawbreakers. Their effort has also drawn fire from right-wing talk radio hosts.  McKinley also piled on the “right-wing politicians” and “conservative” labels in a slanted May story on the Texas governor’s race that will pit sitting Gov. Rick Perry against Democrat Bill White.
