For Discussion: New Study Says Rich College Kids Get More Financial Aid Than Lower Income Students

We thought financial aid was meant to help the kids with no scrilla. Rich Kids Have Edge In College Education According to Today Money College students have a better chance of getting financial aid if they come from affluent backgrounds than if they are lower on the income scale, some new studies show. There is growing evidence that colleges may be offering more scholarship money to wealthy students and less to those truly in need, and by doing so are perhaps closing a door to advancement for many families. A new study by Sallie Mae found that 36 percent of students from wealthy families received scholarships averaging $10,213 for the school year just ended, while 35 percent of students from families earning less than $35,000 a year received scholarships worth an average of $7,237. “With their relentless pursuit of prestige and revenue, the nation’s public and private four-year colleges and universities are in danger of shutting down what has long been a pathway to the middle class,” wrote Stephen Burd, author of the New America study. Why is this happening? For starters, colleges are in a perpetual race to rise in published rankings. Second tier schools are using offers of aid as lures for highly qualified students who might not otherwise attend – even if those students don’t really need the money. Sandy Baum, a senior fellow at George Washington University’s graduate school of education, agrees that colleges are using merit aid in ways that don’t fit the mission of financial aid. But the underlying trends, she says, are complex. Scars from the recession are another issue, Baum says, leaving more students in need of aid. One solution, she says, would be for colleges to lower their tuition and reduce the amount of merit aid they award. With colleges competing for the best students, that shift may be a long time in coming – but “they’re going to have to do something different,” she said. “I have to believe we will evolve in that direction. Is Maria Shriver returning to the Today show? That’s the rumor going after the former NBC fixture reported from the Vatican on the program this week, leading the network to explore a permanent deal. The question is whether she’s interested. Maria may tease (and give a ratings boost) to NBC by coming on occasionally for big stories like the Papal coverage , but beyond that, her role is unclear. Shriver has turned down overtures from NBC and other networks in the past, and simply may not want a daily gig because she doesn’t need the money. The former wife of Arnold Schwarzengger is deeply invested in her charity work and raising their four kids, and has a net worth of at least $100 million. Basically, she’s reluctant to get back into the daily grind of TV news, no matter how badly NBC might want her to replace Matt Lauer ‘s tanking Q rating. Exhale, Matt.

Michael Jordan Love Child Begged Mom to File Lawsuit

The mother of Michael Jordan’s alleged love child never planned to file a paternity suit against the NBA legend, but the child himself reportedly insisted. According to TMZ, Pamela Smith had no desire to sue Jordan until her son pleaded with her to make his (alleged) dad admit paternity and pay support. Taj Jordan (Michael Jordan Secret Son) Video Pamela Smith is suing Michael for just that, paternity and child support, claiming MJ got her pregnant while he was still married to Juanita Vanoy. Sources close to Smith, who says Jordan knocked her up in 1995, has always had a good relationship with Michael and doesn’t need the money. However, it was her son Grant Reynolds (a.k.a. Taj Jordan) who desperately wants MJ to acknowledge him and urged her to file the legal documentation. Smith’s intention, her friends say, was never to “call Michael out” but simply to have the (alleged) father be a bigger part of his life for his sake. Allegedly, Michael and Grant have met a few times over the years. Pamela claims Michael has even given the family money and gifts here and there. Grant, 16, always had to keep it a secret, though … until he apparently decided not to anymore. The teen made the above video last December. No response yet from Jordan or his camp.
