BREAKING: Robert Pattinson is Upset About This Headline

Look — I couldn’t agree more with Dixon’s comments here the other day about sympathizing with Robert Pattinson . I like what little of the guy I’ve seen onscreen and in person , and I wouldn’t wish ill on anyone just because they’re famous or complicit in New Moon or whatever. And I get his and Kristen Stewart’s frustration with the media machine that preys on their their every moody misstep. But to the extent I’m complicit in this very item, it might be as close to mutually assured destruction as contemporary culture gets. Someone needs an intervention.

Newsweek’s Hayes Hater Gets a Promotion

After Newsweek’s Ramin Setoodeh slammed several openly gay actors — and earned stinging rebukes from Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes — some called for the newsmagazine to fire the writer. Instead, he’s gotten the equivalent of a promotion: Setoodeh will leave the struggling Newsweek to become a senior writer on People’s news and human-interest team, it was announced today. Yes, that’s in addition to the offer extended to Setoodeh to visit the Glee set and, uh, “learn about diversity.” Some self-hating gays have all the luck! [ NY Observer ]

Andy Rooney to Never Ever Ever Ever Retire

In an interview yesterday, 60 Minutes curmudgeon Andy Rooney revealed that — shockingly — he was not at all influenced by Amanda Bynes’ sudden decision to quit the business . Said the 91-year-old CBS personality, “How long am I going to work? How long am I going to live? That’s the question. I will work until I drop, or until I lose my head. Until somebody tells me different, I’m not going to quit.” Here’s to another decade worth of viewer mail rants and complaints about crowded shopping malls. [ NYP ]

When Will Pope Joan — AKA the Lady-Pope Biopic — Come to the U.S.?

There is so very much to recommend the new film Pope Joan , the epic German-made, English-language biopic of the legendary (and, many would say, apocryphal) ninth-century woman who ascended to the papal throne while posing as a man. First of all, there’s the idea of a woman ascending to the papal throne, which is endlessly intriguing. Then there’s the other part of her myth, which involved her having a secret lover and a child before she was discovered and torn apart by a vicious mob . Last and hardly least, John Goodman plays her successor, Pope Sergius III, who is the only pope thought to have ordered the murder of a another. Pulpy! And of course the Vatican hates it. So when can we see it in the U.S. ?

Meet Kenny Wormald, Your New Footloose Lead

Back when the Footloose remake had Zac Efron set to star for his High School Musical director Kenny Ortega, it seemed like a no-brainer proposition, but as Efron, Ortega, and then fill-in lead Chace Crawford left the project, Footloose had less and less reason for being. Still, Paramount pressed on, and new director Craig Brewer has now cast a virtual unknown to fill the dance slippers of Efron and Crawford. Let’s meet him!

Michael Fassbender Head of the Class?

It looks like Michael Fassbender’s supervillain Sophie’s Choice might be easier than expected . While he’s still presumably on the shortlist to play the villain in Sony’s Spider-Man reboot, the German actor has been officially offered the role of Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class over at Twentieth Century Fox. If he accepts, Fassbender — next seen slicing throats in Centurion — would star alongside the previously announced James McAvoy, who plays Professor X in the film scheduled for release next summer. Marvel fatigue or not, that does sound pretty OK, right? [ Deadline ]
