Welcome back to Movieline’s Oscar Index, where each week we take the pulse of the awards chatter en route to Hollywood’s big day. This week both Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty surged through the ranks after debuting in their first, successful, awards screenings, though Spielberg’s Lincoln still reigns supreme — but Peter Jackson ‘s 48fps gamble The Hobbit and Quentin Tarantino ‘s Django Unchained are right around the corner, gunning for the spotlight… The Leading 10 1. Lincoln 2. Les Miserables 3. Zero Dark Thirty 4. Argo 5. Silver Linings Playbook 6. Life of Pi 7. Django Unchained 8. Beasts of the Southern Wild 9. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 10. Anna Karenina Outsiders: Skyfall , Moonrise Kingdom , Flight , The Dark Knight Rises , The Master Despite strong guild and critic screening debuts for Les Miserables and Zero Dark Thirty , which absolutely sealed their positions as Best Picture top dogs, Spielberg’s Lincoln is still holding onto its momentum and #1 spot in the race in the hearts and minds of pundits. Meanwhile, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook searches for a way to keep up, while Fox Searchlight’s Beasts of the Southern Wild is making its surge, trotting out Spirit Award-nominated star (and Best Actress hopeful) Quvenzhané Wallis for awards events this week. Best Director 1. Steven Spielberg ( Lincoln ) 2. Kathryn Bigelow ( Zero Dark Thirty ) 3. David O. Russell ( Silver Linings Playbook ) 4. Ben Affleck ( Argo ) 5. Quentin Tarantino ( Django Unchained ) Spielberg still reigns atop the race, but this week’s Zero Dark Thirty splash should boost Bigelow above the ranks of Affleck, whose popular Argo treads similar true history ground but doesn’t match ZDT ‘s weightiness or relevancy. Russell’s staying in the game as well thanks to lingering Silver Linings love, but the Django curiosity factor props Tarantino up even though critics have yet to see it. Next: Who leads the pack for Best Actor & Actress?
From unpronounceable symbols to parenthesis, Gaga’s ALL-CAPS album title joins the ranks of the all-time weirdest. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: ChinaFotoPress/ Getty Images
I’m happy to see that Scarlett Johansson is back on the red carpet all dolled up for the premiere of her new Avengers movie, we haven’t seen her in a while so getting her in a fancy dress is a nice bonus. I don’t like to complain, but I’m not seeing as much boobage as I’d like from her. She’s got some great breasts, but the top of her dress is like a reverse cleavage top, she’s practically wearing a bib. This kind of thing better not catch on. Maybe she can fold it down when she goes to the after party.
Remember Stephanie Pratt ? Me neither, but she used to be on some show people watched for half a summer and that qualifies her for her own post on HollywoodTuna . She’s finally hit the big time. She must be very pleased, she’s joined the ranks of Adrianne Curry , Janice Dickinson and that transgendered Miss Universe contestant. Well done. Anyhow, here she is on the beach in some lame staged bikini pictures. Enjoy.
While it didn’t quite slay Jack and Jill at the box office — a more resounding spanking might’ve restored my faith in humanity, but many, many folks still came out for the Adam Sandler twinsies comedy — Tarsem ‘s fantasy actioner Immortals exceeded expectations on its way to a surprising $32 million number one opening, the best ever debut for studio Relativity Media. Also: Puss in Boots and Tower Heist continued to slide down the ranks, with J. Edgar making a decent go of things to round out the Top 5. Dive in for your Weekend Receipts!
Hark, a new film hath unseated The Help for the #1 crown! All it took was Steven Soderbergh’s hypochondria-inducing Contagion , a picture that will surely also boost worldwide sales of Purell during flu season. And while there’s no love lost in seeing last week’s Shark Night 3D and Apollo 18 drop precipitously down in the ranks, the heartstrings pull for Warrior , a finely acted MMA film that only got a fraction of the theater count of its competitors, and performed accordingly. But! At least it fared better than Bucky Larson …
Clueless is, without a doubt, the best dated movie of the ’90s. The lingo, costuming, and music are the stuff of time capsules, but the film itself feels like a righteous love letter to the post-grunge era. I revisit it whenever there’s a spare moment. In this new video, we see just how many outfits Beverly Hills teen Cher Horowitz (played with unwavering perfection by Alicia Silverstone) can squeeze into a 90-minute movie. Hint: It’s a lot.
While the weather forecast for much of the East Coast looks like a storyboard from Day After Tomorrow thanks to Hurricane Irene, the box office forecast is decidedly more calm. As summer continues to crawl toward Labor Day, three genre films hit theaters, all with the diminished expectations that come with their late August release dates. What movie will you probably ignore this weekend? To the forecast!
