Bill Condon On That ‘Twilight’ Twist And The Shocking Character Fates Of ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’

Readers of Stephenie Meyer ‘s Twilight books know what happens at the end of Breaking Dawn … or do they? Movieline sat down with director Bill Condon for an all-out, no-holds-barred, spoilery chat about the shocking changes at the end of Breaking Dawn Part II that had fans gasping in theaters around the globe over the weekend — including how the filmmakers decided who lived and who died, and why if you blinked you may have missed the most earth-shattering character fates of them all. Spoilers abound from this point on! Now that you’ve all had a chance to see Breaking Dawn in theaters, it’s time to dive into the bounty of spoilery riches that Bill Condon left us with when he spoke with Movieline about all things Twilight . Such as: — Deciding who lived and who died in Breaking Dawn ‘s horrific, head-rolling, jaw-tearing bloodbath of a (dream) battle sequence. — Walking the fine line between Uncle Jacob being just protective enough of Renesmee and being totally creepy. — Which character’s battlefield speech was left on the cutting room floor — and which scenes will we see on the DVD? — How much real world political commentary can viewers read into Aro’s weapons of mass destruction-seeking, warmongering ways? (Also — if Condon used the “smaller” take of Aro’s gleefully campy cackle, what in the world did it sound like when Sheen cranked it all the way to 11?) — And, most shocking of all: Did you realize that Edward and Bella were meant to die ? PHOTOS: Stars Hit The Premiere Of Breaking Dawn – Part II You had just finished the last of the effects prior to release, working on the Renesmee CG. Hers stand out because it’s a kind of CG effect we haven’t seen before — applying Mackenzie Foy’s face to her character from birth to adulthood. How challenging was it to achieve the desired effect? Bill Condon: You’re building on stuff that was done on The Social Network and Benjamin Button , but it had challenges beyond what they had. She is a special creature — she’s not entirely human — so that helps us, a little bit. It is a bit uncanny, that CG baby face. Condon: Yes, I agree. We briefly see a flash forward to the grown Renesmee, living happily ever after with Jacob once she reaches her full maturity a few years down the road — when Jacob finally gets to date Renesmee. Condon: Finally, yes! On La Push. What was the trick to figuring out how to include that happy romantic ending for Jacob and Renesmee without it being creepy? Condon: Well the thing is, obviously it was controversial the minute it was written. But as a filmmaker you have a great ally in Taylor Lautner, and Taylor was concerned about it. But Taylor is a pure soul. He is able to look at her with love and it doesn’t have another component to it, and I think another actor couldn’t have done that. I think there’s something so essentially sweet about him that it’s a generous love. The humor element throughout the entire film helps relieve the pressure and the far-fetched nature of much of the mythology — what spurred you folks to add in more levity for the finale? Condon: Any time you can add humor it’s great, because it makes something more real. You take Billy Burke; he had to play a scene which is so incredibly hard I called him “The Miracle Worker,” in which a father has to accept that his daughter has become a vampire, but he also has to accept that she can’t tell him anything about it. He can’t ask questions, but he’s a cop. Billy went through a hundred changes through that scene, and you see it all on his face – and he’s funny the whole time he’s doing it. That deadpan, “Are you kidding me?” look really gets you through some of this strange stuff. You filmed Parts 1 and 2 simultaneously, sometimes having Kristen Stewart play weak, dying Bella in the same afternoon as strong vampire Bella. Condon: I really do think that Kristen Stewart is amazing, but I feel like in terms of this series she doesn’t get credit for how much she accomplishes. I think if someone were to sit and watch these two movies that we made together at the same time and realize that Kristen shot that all together, it’s just another level of her gift. She was stepping out of her comfort zone, because there was so much Kristen in teenage Bella — and now this was someone who she was just creating. I think Kristen, who’s tough on herself, was able to step out of all that stuff and just really own everything. Readers of the books have been defending Twilight for years now, understandably; Bella is a passive character early in the franchise, and we only see her grow into her strength in Breaking Dawn . Condon: That’s right — and she always had this latent power. In the beginning it was the thing that made her remote, but I love the last scene in the movie; it’s such a beautiful idea. It’s the reason he was interested in her the moment that he met her, but it’s such a metaphor for love, that you trust a person enough to let them see inside of you. You inherited much of your primary cast from the previous films’ directors, but in Breaking Dawn Part II you got to cast a number of colorful new additions. Like Lee Pace… Condon: Dreamy, right? Yes, and so funny with such limited screen time. Condon: I know! These actors all have a couple of scenes to establish these characters, and we have 25 of them, so we had to get actors who really pop. And they also had to know how to mine as much comedy as you can possibly get out of something. Did you feel a lot of pressure to deliver with the action sequence? Condon: I did! I loved it. It was like making one big musical number, because it’s all about rhythm in an action scene. It’s all about the way it’s like, my god, this is happening so we’ll slow it down for a bit, and you take a moment to really take it in – then things are going well, then they’re going badly. It’s like a roller coaster. I loved working on that, but it was the hardest thing. It was a two-year effort. We had an editor who just concentrated on that. Once we stopped shooting it started all over; we put it in a different order and rearranged things, reshot a little bit of it, to really make it work. I didn’t realize it right away, but the battle scene ends on a much darker note than I thought, so please set the record straight — after killing Aro in that alternate future-flash, do Bella and Edward die? Condon: Yes. There’s a hint of it; it’s about to happen. Edward gets surrounded and they’re coming right at her with the fire. It’s very subtle and there’s the switch. I didn’t want to spend too much time in there; it’s just a little hint in there if you can see it. What do you expect fans will be most shocked by? Condon: The moment when Carlisle’s head comes off, I’d think. I’ve seen it with an audience and I love it. The collective gasp in the theater in that moment is pretty fantastic. Condon: I know — it’s fun, isn’t it? I love that. NEXT: Deciding who would live and die Breaking Dawn Part II ‘s big battle, DVD deleted scenes, and more

Taylor Lautner On Jacob And Renesmee’s ‘Breaking Dawn’ May-December Relationship: ‘I Was Worried About It’

You think navigating a press junket after a personal controversy goes public is potentially awkward? Try braving throngs of journalists clamoring for an answer to The Twilight Saga ‘s curious “imprinting” storyline , as Taylor Lautner did today when the franchise-ending  Breaking Dawn Part II  press tour kicked off. For the record, both parties in the reportedly reunited Robsten supercouple acquitted themselves ably and congenially in back-to-back press conferences as they discussed their four-year journey with the vampire franchise. [ Mild spoilers follow, if you haven’t read the books .] But Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson aren’t the only Twilight kids who’ve matured in the interim as the worldwide phenomenon has turned them and their cast mates into global megastars. Twenty-year-old Lautner came off with charisma even as he broached the subject of his character’s eyebrow-raising onscreen soul mate attachment to a child in Breaking Dawn . “It’s a fine line, and I was worried about it,” Lautner admitted of Jacob Black’s supernatural, (platonic — for now) love at first sight connection to the half-human, half-vampire offspring of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. (By comparison, Edward’s a century older than Bella, so in the grand scheme of things it’s not that bad…) Played by 9-year-old Mackenzie Foy, Renesmee grows from infant to school-age girl in a superhuman span of time — and as in the books, Jacob is compelled by his Quileute legacy to instantly “imprint,” or attach, himself to her side in a manner that eventually will take on romantic undertones. Understandably he had concerns, so he went to the source for advice: Stephenie Meyer. “There was nobody better to ask about it than her,” Lautner said. “And she basically told me, ‘Stop overcomplicating it. Think here and now, that’s all you really have to focus on.’” “It’s simple — she said it’s a lifelong bond between two people and that’s it,” he continued. “At this point the girl’s like, what, ten years old? So it’s more of a protective thing, like a brother-sister. That’s really all it is. I couldn’t allow myself to think ahead and go beyond that, so that’s kind of the zone I had to stay in.” The weirdness of the Jacob-Renesmee bond is not lost on Jacob in the film, who encounters a furious Bella when she awakens from human death to find her best friend has imprinted on her newborn baby. But Lautner’s Jacob finds himself in a more than few awkward situations in Breaking Dawn . Another scene found Lautner stripping down in front of Billy Burke’s Charlie in one of the surprisingly comical moments sprinkled throughout the film. “It actually was pretty funny in person,” Lautner laughed. “I love Billy Burke to death and he’s one of the coolest people alive, so it was a little uncomfortable for me — it’s always uncomfortable when I have to take my shirt off or something because I’m always the only one doing it!” “The weather conditions we film in, and everybody’s bundled up in like seven layers and I’m the only one in jean shorts… that was a new one,” he said. “I think the pants came off in that one too. But it was a funny, funny scene. I was so nervous to film it because it was written so hilariously and I wanted it to come across that way and I hope it does, but it was a blast to shoot.” Stay tuned for more on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt. II , which hits theaters November 16. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

It’s on! Responding to yesterday’s unveiling of the inaugural Movieline Soily Awards, an eagle-eyed commenter pointed out this brief note posted to the Golden Raspberry Awards official message board — a reply apparently from “Head RAZZberry” John Wilson himself: “Many a RAZZIE® imitator has come and gone during the 32 years we’ve been doing our awards. And looking over their category names and choices, I’ve gotta say the so-called ‘Soilys,’ [sic] with their fixation on excremental terminology and their categories with names few American publications would even touch (let alone publish) look likelier to join the ‘gone’ list than make the brief roster of our ‘competitors’ who’ve stood the test of time…” Wait — so is he saying that we’re not going to get the Shit-the-Bed Award written up in USA Today ? Who knew? Anyway, Wilson or his representative or whoever brings up a crucial element of the awards that we did omit: SOILIES® looks so much more dignified, no? We also seem to have forgotten to charge folks to vote . Oops. Next year! Read more about the 2012 Soilies here , and drop back by tomorrow for our Reader’s Choice launch! Follow S.T. Breaking Dawn Part 2 Teaser Reveals First Look at Vampire Bella Swan

Kristen Stewart should finally get to have some fun this November in Summit’s franchise-ending The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 , which sees heroine Bella Swan finally blossom into the hot lady vampire mom she was always meant to be. A new teaser reveals your first full look at Stewart as Vampire Bella flexing her new superpowers, making out with Robert Pattinson , worrying about the hordes who want to kill her baby — you know, the usual new parent routine. The clip, apparently taken from a Target in-store promo reel, reveals Stewart in full vampire mode: Red lips, amber eyes, pale skin, perfect eyebrows, bolder sense of self-confidence. The scene within shows Bella and Edward discussing their final challenge: Gathering enough support from the vampire community to prove to Michael Sheen’s head bloodsucker crew that their little half-human, half-vampire baby Renesmee isn’t an abomination of nature. That’s essentially what the conclusion of Breaking Dawn is about: Parenthood. Sigh. Compared to the teenage murder battles of The Hunger Games Bella’s undead domestic melodramas don’t sound quite as exciting anymore. [via Daily Mail ]

Robert Pattinson ‘Like A Dad’ To Mackenzie Foy

‘I don’t see him as cute,’ 11-year-old actress who plays vampire/human daughter Renesmee Cullen tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images With the official release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” just a few days away, it’s hard to focus on anything else “Twilight”-related. But here at MTV News we can and do, particularly since we managed to snag an interview with Mackenzie Foy on Monday night at the Los Angeles premiere, where the adorable young actress said she was only allowed to see “bits and pieces,” given a few intense and steamy scenes , Never mind the fact that there’s still another year to go before we see Foy onscreen when “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” opens, we were just excited to talk to her about playing Renesmee, the half-vampire/ half-human daughter of Edward and Bella. “To be honest, I’m really excited about this part too,” Foy gushed. “I knew that [playing] Renesmee Cullen was going to be a big, amazing experience. I knew that she was going to be an amazing big part to do and I’m ready for it and I did it.” The blue-eyed, brown-haired 11-year-old admitted that she might look “just a little bit like” her onscreen parents, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and had nothing but praise for how nice everyone was to her during filming — except, of course, when it came to using naughty language. We heard Foy made out like a bandit by charging her co-stars money every time they swore, so we asked her to confirm. “Yes, it is true! They would say bad words, and I put it all in this little bucket called the ‘Swear Jar.’ I don’t really know [how much I made], I know it was a lot but I donated it all to St. Jude’s,” she revealed, adding that no one in particular was more foul-mouthed than any other castmember. “They all swear pretty evenly,” she said. We moved on to another important question: Like millions of other Twilighters, does Foy think co-star Pattinson is cute? “I don’t see him as cute,” she said matter-of-factly. “He’s really nice and all, but he’s more of a friend or a brother or a dad to me. … Kristen is an amazing, sweet, wonderful actress and I’m so lucky to be working with her,” she added. “She’s an amazing person.” And what does she think about Taylor Lautner, her would-be future onscreen love interest? “He is nice, he’s funny, he just loves to be with people,” Foy said. “I loved working with all of them; they’re really sweet.” Finally, regarding her favorite scene to shoot, Foy hinted that it’s one toward the end of the movie (and likely the franchise) between Renesmee and Jacob. “My favorite scene to shoot was one of the very last scenes with Taylor. It’s one where I’m on him and it’s just really cool,” she teased. “I’m not going to give out details, but it’s a really amazing scene.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
