Legacy: A Reflection On Voguing, From Ball Culture To Teyana Taylor’s Music Video

Originally posted here:

Source: Catherine McGann / Getty Over the past few months, Teyana Taylor has been dropping music videos left and right for songs off her  K.T.S.E. album. On Wednesday, “WTP” was the latest visual released, and it was filled with ball culture celebration.   Balls have been organized by LGBTQ people of color for decades now, and they’re continuing to get more recognition thanks to shows like Pose on FX and My House on Viceland. During a ball, individuals or “houses” (a person’s adopted family) can compete in multiple categories, oftentimes for a cash prize, a trophy and maybe most importantly, “legendary” status. There are dozens of categories participants can walk in, but some of the most important ones fall under titles like Butch Queen (usually gay or queer men), Femme Queen (usually trans women or femmes), and of course voguing.   Voguing alone can be broken down into the new way and the old way of dancing. The old way of voguing reached the national spotlight thanks to the 1990 movie Paris is Burning,  and one of its main stars was Willi Ninja.    Willi’s angular, picturesque and precise style of voguing would go on to influence dancers around the world, and it even landed him appearances in music videos like Janet Jackson ‘s “Alright” and “Escapade.” The old way of voguing received an even bigger spotlight when Madonna released her music video for “Vogue” in 1990. Though the music video has been met with  more critical eyes over the years, icons like Luis Xtravaganza  and  Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza  represented for vogue culture in the wildly popular video.   As the years progressed, voguing started to evolve into a new way that many people are familiar with today. This style involves more acrobatic moves and difficult executions such as “duck walks,” “dips” or “death drops.” Masters like Dashaun Wesley,  who appeared in Teyana Taylor’s video, have help carry on this voguing tradition.   Now, with more light being shined on LGBTQ communities of color, voguing has had another resurgence in popular media. Legendary voguers like Leiomy are showing off their skills in Nike commercials…   Even hip hop has been bitten by the vogue bug with Q-Tip featuring ball culture in the music video for his song with Demi Lovato  “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”   Dancer-singers like FKA Twigs have also kept voguing alive by taking it out of its traditional ballroom setting and placing it on the far edges of the world. FKA’s “Glass & Patron” definitely repped for the technique…   But no matter how far voguing or ball culture goes, it will forever be the product of queer imagination. It’s dedicated LGBTQ community of color will continue to exemplify those who dared to live, create and of course, have fun.

Pay Attention! FBI Says “Black Identity Extremists” Pose Growing Threat To Cops

Image via Michael B. Thomas/Getty Images FBI Labels “Black Identity Extremists” As Threat To Police This is how it starts. Everyone needs to pay attention because one day we might look back at this moment as a pivotal moment when the federal government reinvigorated a campaign against Black protesters and activists . According to ForeignPolicy , the FBI’s counterterrorism unit is warning that “black identity extremists” are a major threat to law enforcement officers. They even have a cute acronym for “these types” of people, BIE. Peep the langage used here: “The FBI assesses it is very likely Black Identity Extremist (BIE) perceptions of police brutality against African Americans spurred an increase in premeditated, retaliatory lethal violence against law enforcement and will very likely serve as justification for such violence,” “Perceptions”. PERCEPTIONS. “Perceptions of police brutality against African Americans”…ain’t no “perceptions”, b!tc#! We KNOW the police whoop our azzes just for living. Our collective response to the police shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson is the catalyst for the Black boogie men who are taking aim at cops if you let them tell it: “The FBI assesses it is very likely incidents of alleged police abuse against African Americans since then have continued to feed the resurgence in ideologically motivated, violent criminal activity within the BIE movement,” Again, “alleged”. Pay. Attention. The feds are labeling Black folks who are angry at systemic racism as domestic terrorists. Something that the President didn’t do when addressing the tiki-torchers in Charlottesville. You know what America does when they perceive a group of people to be terrorists…at least when they’re Black or brown. Guess they don’t see neo-Nazis and alt-right azzholes in that same light. Imagine that.

Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Pimp Out The Golden Globes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are not only co-hosts of the 70th Golden Globes this year, they’re also competitors. Both were nominated for Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy, with Fey duking it out with her counterpart for 30 Rock , while Poehler is up for the award for Park and Recreation . [ Related: Golden Globes Unveil 70th Edition Nominees ] But while the co-hosts won’t conceivably know the results until the envelope opens at the ceremony on January 13th, the pair are busy working together in the lead-up to the big event, and no doubt re-calling those good ol’ Saturday Night Live days. In this promo for the Globes, the duo are dressed in matching golden sparkly dresses and they both dish out cheesy Brit(ish) accents (until they don’t). Maybe they’re commenting on the resurgence of British-speak in Hollywood films reminiscent of the very early “golden days” of Hollywood? Who knows, but here’s a funny look at what may bode well for the Globes telecast after the New Year. [ Source: Huffington Post ]

Selena Gomez Says Her Next Album Is ‘More Mature’

‘It is very different, and I’m growing up,’ she says of the yet-untitled summer record. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News Selena Gomez isn’t a little girl anymore. She’s 18, in a high-profile romance and has left Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” behind for less tween fare. Her next step also includes her forthcoming album and the empowering first single “Who Says.” “We haven’t decided [a] title [yet for the album] and we’re dealing with the album artwork, ’cause it is very different and I’m growing up,” she told MTV News. “It’s a lot more mature.” Gomez admits that she really loves stepping out of the Disney shadow to grow up in a big way on this album. “I’m growing,” she said. “I’m constantly changing, and it’s fun being able to express that for my fans. So this album is a huge rave; it really is. It’s funky, it’s different. I’m liking it.” The album will not feature any duets or collaborations, but Gomez does have a wish list just in case she feels the need to throw someone on one of the tracks between now and the summer release date. “All of it is pretty much me,” she said of the yet-untitled album. “I love Bruno Mars; I’m obsessed with him. I love B.o.B. I love Adele’s new record; it’s insane. I would love to even just meet her.” Gomez has previously shared that “there’s a lot more depth [on this album].” She has tracks on it that fully express the wide range of emotions she feels as a young woman in the spotlight. “There is one [song] that I’m completely in love with, and it was written by Pixie Lott, who I am obsessed with,” she said. “And it’s my mom’s favorite song. It’s very sweet. It’s kind of a ballad, but not really. It’s basically about living in the moment; it’s about enjoying right now. I’m very much enjoying right now. I’m in a good place.” What are you expecting from Selena’s next album? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Selena Gomez Related Artists Selena Gomez
