‘Mechanic’ Star Jason Statham Talks Allure Of Playing Tough Guys

‘If I do go into something else, it will be because it is good,’ the action hero tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Jason Statham Photo: MTV News Those familiar with the work of Jason Statham know that he doesn’t really do “fluffy” films or romantic comedies. He is a man of action and general butt-kicking/badass-ery: see “The Transporter,” “The Bank Job,” “Crank” and “The Expendables,” to name a few. Statham’s new film, “The Mechanic,” in which he plays a trained assassin who takes the son of his former mentor (Ben Foster) under his wing, is no different. There is a lot of action and a lot of ass-kicking, just the way his fans like it. When MTV News caught up with Statham, we asked him if he felt at all typecast, and whether he’d take on a nice-guy role in a romantic comedy someday. “You know, it’s tough, because people will always keep saying to me, ‘Do you only see yourself doing action movies?’ and, I don’t know,” Statham said. “It’s very difficult because one day I might be asked to do something that is of quality in a different genre, but the films that come from different genres aren’t that great,” he argued. “So I end up not doing them because once you make a mistake in that area, you can’t go back. So, if I do go into something else, it will be because it is good.” But Foster told us his co-star doesn’t just play a tough guy onscreen, but rather makes each performance unique by infusing them with “vulnerability.” “If you’re a tough guy, and Jason is, the hardest part is showing vulnerability,” Foster explained. “And it’s working in ‘The Bank Job’ and in ‘The Mechanic’ here, and other films. He brings a lot of quiet heart to it. And it’s difficult stuff because movie viewers aren’t looking for that necessarily,” he said. “But Jason is always being a humanity to [something] behind the bullets.” Are you fan of Jason Statham’s action roles? Jake Johnson Raves About ‘No Strings Attached’ Director Ivan Reitman

‘I couldn’t debate him on stuff,’ actor says of legendary director/producer. By Kara Warner Jake Johnson Photo: MTV News For rising comedic star Jake Johnson, who appears alongside Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman in the new romantic comedy “No Strings Attached,” his personal highlight from working on the film (in addition to having the best lines in the trailer and many of the killer one-liners in the film as well) was working with legendary director/producer Ivan Reitman. “For me, working with Ivan Reitman was crazy because of ‘Ghostbusters,’ ” Johnson recently told MTV News of the man responsible for helping bring comedic classics like “Animal House,” “Ghostbusters” and “Meatballs” to the screen. “We did a whole scene where, this was one of the coolest moments of the movie for me, the scene where we’re in a fraternity house, partying and, you know, Ivan produced ‘Animal House,’ ” Johnson added. “And we’re all hanging out, setting up, and he goes to somebody he was standing next to, we were standing in a little circle, and he goes, ‘Man, I’m having flashbacks of “Animal House” in here.’ And he looked around and goes, ‘This is exactly how it felt, but in a different era.’ And I thought, ‘That’s awesome!’ Like, this is actually that man. [He] was there and [John] Belushi and [Bill] Murray and all those guys were such inspirations for our kind of generation. So to see a man who was there, it made it very real.” The actor, who you may recognize from his roles in “Get Him to the Greek” and “Paper Heart,” said Reitman’s legacy and r

Ashton Kutcher Talks ‘No Strings Attached’ Sex Scenes’

‘There were no major injuries,’ he assures MTV News of his racy scenes with Natalie Portman. By Kara Warner Ashton Kutcher Photo: MTV News In the new romantic comedy “No Strings Attached,” Ashton Kutcher and Golden Globe winner Natalie Portman play two people who try to just be “sex friends” rather than entering into a traditional romantic relationship. As the “sex friends” moniker might imply, there are quite a few racy scenes in the film and, in particular, one long mash-up of their characters engaging in various acts and positions, in various locations. We’ll call it the “sex montage.” When MTV News caught up with Kutcher recently, we asked him if there were any bloopers to come out of filming so many challenging-looking scenarios for the montage. “There weren’t really any bloopers,” he said. “It’s always sort of awkward and giggly, right? Because you’re there and you’re with someone you sort of know, and there’s a lot of people watching,” he explained of the awkward factor involved in filming love scenes. “It’s always kind of in-between scenes you try to make jokes and divert it, ‘Oh it’s not a big deal,’ try to make it seem like it’s not a big deal.” So there were no major injuries suffered then? “Nah, there were no major injuries,” Kutcher assured us. “There was a dirty-feet situation,” he revealed. “Because the ground was dirty, and there was one scene where we both had our feet up, and they were showing in camera. We were walking around getting ready to do the scene, and the set floor was a little dirty, so we both had really dirty feet. That was weird, I don’t know why. … No dirty feet in bed,” he added. Jean Rollin, Master of the Lesbian Vampire Flick, Dies at 72

On the same day that we lost 10 director Blake Edwards , fans of movie nudity also lost another of its leading lights, the undisputed master of the surrealist erotic horror genre, Jean Rollin . A true auteur Rollin was practically the patron saint of lesbian vampire movies, providing the world with classics like Fascination , Lips of Blood , and The Nude Vampire as well as Euro-sleaze like Bacchanales Sexuelle s and Emmanuelle 6 with German Playboy model Natalie Uher . Thanks to the films of Jean Rollin, we have plenty of fully nude footage of tasty French dishes like eye-popping porn princess Brigitte Lahaie and tempting twins Marie-Pierre and Catherine Castel . Gone but not forgotten, Jean Rollin will live on in the many skinspirational films he left behind. Bon soir, mon ami.

With big-budget kids’ movies like Yogi Bear and TRON: Legacy and the skinless romantic comedy How Do You Know? dominating theaters this pre-holiday weekend, it’s a perfect time to stay home with your DVD player and check out the stars in some of their less constrictive roles. Uploading into theaters this weekend, Olivia Wilde costars in Disney’s special effects extravaganza TRON: Legacy . Olivia Wilde doesn’t take off her glowing outfit in TRON:, so if you want to see her nude, skip the crowds this weekend and stay home with a DVD of the 2006 skinstant classic Alpha Dog , where Ms. Wilde shows off her eye-popping rackage an hour and 45 minutes in. That will put a light cycle in your pants. Also in theaters this weekend, it’s the new romantic comedy How Do You Know? for all the moviegoers who are too old for TRON. Unfortunately, it may not have the same special effects as those TRON , but it has the same amount of nudity—none. The movie stars Paul Rudd , Owen Wilson , and Reese Witherspoon in a story about a love triangle that will quickly lose the interest of anyone looking to see Reese’s witherpoon. So go pick up the 1998 vampire-free crime flick Twilight where just two minutes in, Reese’s pieces are on full display as she toplessly bangs her boyfriend in bed, and then again a minute later. How do you know when it’s a good movie? Check your pants!

‘How Do You Know’ Star Reese Witherspoon Recalls Softball ‘Crash Course’

‘I’m not a ringer or anything,’ she tells MTV News of her newfound skills. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon Photo: MTV News Because director James L. Brooks has only made six films in his career, most actors jump at the chance to work with him — as was the case when Brooks approached Reese Witherspoon for a role in the upcoming romantic comedy “How Do You Know.” “[It was] incredibly flattering and terrifying at the same time,” Witherspoon told MTV News recently regarding her reaction to Brooks’ initial interest. “When he called me, I was like, ‘He wants to meet me? And do what?’ We sat down, and he said, ‘I want to write this character, and I want you to play it.’ And I was like, ‘Great!’ And he said, ‘I want you to be a professional softball player. Do you play softball?’ ” ‘Yes, of course I do!’ ” Witherspoon recalled responding — but she admitted to MTV News in a whisper: “No, I don’t play softball. But I learned. I did a crash course with the UCLA Bruins, and they taught me. Three hours a day for four months. They really helped.” Given the fact that there’s not much of Witherspoon’s character playing softball in the film, we wondered what motivated her to commit to such extensive training. “I think it’s a completely different culture growing up as an athlete. You have a completely different high school experience, you have a completely different college experience, your whole career is over in your 30s — that’s just a different life,” she explained. “In a way, it’s almost a suspended adolescence. My character doesn’t really have much romantic knowledge. She’s dated a bunch of athletes on the road and stuff, but she’s never had to be in a real relationship. It was important to assimilate to that culture, because I didn’t know anything about it.” So given her newly acquired skills, can we call on Witherspoon to play on our team in a future pickup softball game? “I’d look really good doing it, because I know how to look good doing it,” she admitted. “I’m just not sure I’d help you win the game. I’m not a ringer or anything. Don’t call me in. I’m not going to help.” Check out everything we’ve got on “How Do You Know.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
