Michele Bachmann Iowa Campaign Director Quits, Joins Ron Paul, Denies Payoff

Michele Bachmann is railing against Ron Paul and Kent Sorenson, who left his post as head of her Iowa campaign effort to go work for her rival instead. Presidential hopeful Bachmann implied that Paul, who is running much stronger in Iowa, bought off her key staffer a week before the state’s caucuses. “Kent Sorenson personally told me he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign,” Bachmann said in a statement to Fox News. GOP Debate: Paul vs. Bachmann “Kent campaigned with us earlier this afternoon and went immediately afterward to a Ron Paul event and announced he is changing teams.” “Kent said to me yesterday that ‘everyone sells out in Iowa, why shouldn’t I?’ then he told me he would stay with our campaign,” Bachmann added. “The Ron Paul campaign has to answer for its actions.” In response, Paul’s campaign said Bachmann’s Iowa political director “unequivocally stated Kent Sorenson’s decision was in no way financially motivated.” Sorenson attributed his decision to Paul’s higher standing in polls, where he is battling Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum for the top spot. Jesse Benton, Paul’s national campaign chairman, welcomed the endorsement from Sorenson, himself an Iowa State Senator, before the Jan. 3 vote: “Congressman Paul is delighted to accept the endorsement of Senator Kent Sorenson, whose blessing and assistance carry a great deal [of] weight.” “He doesn’t take this decision lightly, which says a lot about the senator and Ron Paul.” He also picked up an endorsement from Kelly Clarkson this week. Can he pull off a masterstroke and upset the field next week? Stay tuned. Ron Paul: The Big Dog!

Ashton Kutcher and Lorene Scafaria: Not Dating, Rep Claims

According to his rep, Ashton Kutcher will not be ringing in the new year with a new romantic interest on his arm. Following a Tweeted photo of himself and Lorene Scafaria in Italy this week, chatter naturally grew that the actor and the screenwriter were now an item . But the two “are just friends,” Kutcher’s rep tells People . “They are working on a potential project together about an Italian soccer team.” Well, that does make sense. Ashton knows a lot about scoring. Scafaria previously dated Adam Brody and wrote the screenplay for Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist . Kutcher, of course, split from Demi Moore this year after she got sick of his wandering penis.

‘Nanny McPhee Returns’ Is ‘Hugely Satisfying,’ Emma Thompson Says

‘You have so much invested in the story,’ she tells MTV News of writing and starring in the sequel. By Kara Warner Emma Thompson Photo: MTV News It’s hard to believe that it’s already been four years since moviegoers first met Nanny McPhee. Emma Thompson’s no-nonsense portrayal of the homely-yet-helpful nanny had such a positive impact on audiences that a second installment, “Nanny McPhee Returns,” is opening in theaters this week. We recently caught up with the esteemed actress and the film’s writer to discuss why she waited so long to continue her McPhee story (which is based on Christianna Brand’s “Nurse Matilda” books) and how being the screenwriter/actress makes the filmmaking experience doubly satisfying. “There was a big gap … four years, so I had lots of time to do other things,” she explained. Those other things included six films (“Stranger Than Fiction,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Last Chance Harvey” — a performance for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe — “An Education,” just to name a few) and getting back to work on writing another “McPhee” installment. “It’s very different to reprise a character if you’ve also written the story,” Thompson said. “You have so much invested in the story, and because I have so much involvement in casting and seeing it come together, there’s something hugely satisfying about it, so it’s not just a question of, suddenly I turn up on set and I have to put the makeup on. I’ve been sitting and writing it for years, literally.” Thompson said that, despite the role requiring considerable time in hair and makeup, the fact that the material she wrote inspired it makes it extra special: “In a sense, putting the costume on is the reward for having sat on my own for a few years writing the story.” “Nanny McPhee” opens Friday and co-stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans and Maggie Smith and features cameos by Ralph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor. Check out everything we’ve got on “Nanny McPhee Returns.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Scream 4 Script Rewrites Causing Major Trouble Among Cast?

Since Scream 4 updates apparently happen hourly , here’s your latest: Screenwriter Kevin Williamson has already been replaced on the set by Scream 3 writer Ehren Kruger. And now Kruger — the man responsible in part for the immortal Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen script — is handling the rewrites and apparently leaving the cast quite unhappy. The changes reportedly caused Lauren Graham to drop out and are upsetting Hayden Panetierre, whose role has been “dumbed down significantly.” Just wait until she’s allowed to read the finished script.
