EXCLUSIVE: Kelly Rowland On The Power Of Loving Your ‘Crown And Glory’

Source: Robin L. Marshall / Getty Images For Dove As Black women, many of us can remember that exact moment when we were painfully reminded that our hair was different. Mine happened at the predominately white elementary school I attended in the late 80s. All of us students were working on an art project with colored pencils we had to swap out for news ones at our teacher’s desk. I was really feeling myself that day because I had gotten my hair pressed over the weekend. It was laid, luxurious and smelling like fresh Pink Oil Lotion. I remember sitting at my desk, tapping those smooth pencils on the side my head as I pondered how to create my masterpiece. When I was done, I returned my pencils, feeling confident that my design was amazing. But a few minutes later that all changed when I heard someone loudly ask, “Why are these pencils so greasy?” My nemesis, who I will call Melissa, quickly told the class, “That’s because Kellee put them in her hair.” The room erupted in laughter. I was devastated. Having that straight hair made me feel like I had finally fit in with the Colleens and Beckies of the fourth grade. And yet in that instant, their cruelty had my facade crashing all the way down. It’s funny, because it’s been over a decade since the last time I’d even thought about that horrible day. But when I first heard Kelly Rowland’s recent song “Crown,” I was instantly brought back to that time. See, this collaboration with Dove is an empowering anthem aimed at young girls, reminding them that their hair is wonderful, glorious and amazing as is. And the video includes young girls from around the country who have been punished and even suspended for how they chose to rock their tresses. Seeing “Crown’s” images and hearing its lyrics made me wish I had something like this when I was younger, a singer to tell that ashamed little Black girl that her hair was “beautiful in every color. Long, short, straight or curly.” Now if I, a grown woman at 40-years-old, can be inspired by this, I can only imagine the impact it’s having on girls and young women who are coming into their own living in a world of the pressures of Instagram and Snapchat. This is why what Kelly is doing is so important. She is using her God-given gift to do her part to help shape the way girls see themselves and the world around them. And for little Black girls (and women), these messages are especially needed, given the complicated relationship we have with our hair and how often our bodies and hair are overpoliced at school, the workplace and beyond . In addition to the song, Kelly’s taking the message to the streets with community events aimed at bolstering girls’s self-esteem. Last month in downtown Los Angeles, Kelly co-hosted a Dove Self-Esteem Workshop with more than 30 girls from the Boys and Girls Club in attendance. The special workshop, which took place on Feb. 19, offered numerous confidence tips, an interactive conversation and ended with a runway show with the girls showing off the paper crowns they decorated. HelloBeautiful recently caught up with Kelly to discuss her personal story behind “Crown,” why representation matters and tips on overcoming our own hair issues.

This Student Is Going Viral For A Presentation That Calls Out His Teacher For Using The N-Word

Continued here:

Source: Hill Street Studios / Getty This student is going viral for the absolutely perfect way he handled an awkward situation in the classroom, calling out his teacher for using the n-word twice during a presentation to his class. 23-year-old Maleek Eid is a marketing student at College of the Desert in Palm Desert. His English class was using Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” as an example for annotation when white his professor used the opportunity to drop the n-word word. “She said ‘they used to use words like…’ and she said the n-word,” Eid told BuzzFeed News about how the situation in the classroom went down.. “I didn’t say anything, I was actually so shocked.” He continued to explain that the same teacher used the word once again a week later in a similar context. “So I was like, that’s strike two, and strike one didn’t sit well with me already.” That’s when Maleek knew something had to be done–and he would have to be the one to do it. Eid–who is Palestinian–said the word didn’t seem to register as wrong or innapropriate with the rest of the students, none of whom are black. According to statistics via the 2010 census, less than 2% of Palm Desert residents are black. This upset student was already planning on reporting this incident to the school, but then, the professor assigned an opposing arguments assignment where students would have to tackle a controversial subject. With the memory of his teacher spewing the racial slur fresh in his mind, Maleek knew exactly what argument he was going to do his project on. That’s when Eid made a presentation countering arguments that many non-black people make in favor of using the n-word, calling out the professor in the process. He ended up recording parts of his presentation, including audio of his teacher’s reactions when she was called out for her contribution to continued use of the harmful word. THREAD: My professor used the N-word twice. So I called her out as my project. (Open thread for reaction) pic.twitter.com/gozbDx5tMq — Maleek Eid (@AbuYoshi) March 4, 2019 According to Maleek, the professor remained silent through the presentation, but defended herself and her use of the word thereafter. “I said the word because I wanted a response, I wanted someone to say, ‘that’s wrong to say that’ or ‘I take offense to that,’” the professor says. “Sometimes when we’re discussing things and you’re all sitting there going” — she made snoring sounds — “kind of thing, sometimes somebody’s gotta shake you up.” Eid was quick to shoot down that strategy, saying, “If the solution to getting your class to snap up is using the n-word then you need different strategies.” REACTION PART 1: My professor’s reaction to being called out for using the N-word twice. pic.twitter.com/ckwwM65GT2 — Maleek Eid (@AbuYoshi) March 4, 2019 The school responded to BuzzFeed News ‘ request for comment saying the following: “College of the Desert’s core values are based on inclusiveness and diversity in all forms, including academic freedom for both students and faculty,” said Pamela Hunter, executive director of institutional advancement for the college.. “It is the policy of the Desert Community College District to recognize the importance of academic freedom in pursuit of academic excellence for both faculty and students. We embrace diversity in all forms and the right of all people to have access to quality higher education in a safe and respectful learning environment.” Maleek and his professor continued to debate the subject following his presentation, talking about the situation both in the classroom and during a break one-on-one. According to Eid, his fellow students were unsupportive of his stance, either ignoring the situation or giggling, which he said it left him feeling quite depressed. But the response to his threat on Twitter has brought the opposite response, with most people praising Eid for standing up against his professor and sticking his neck out for what’s right. pic.twitter.com/2gbCjtJuPl — ig: @spillled (@spilllings) March 4, 2019 Your whole class is rude and insensitive and I’m glad you felt the need to not only call the professor out but also call them out on their laughing and chuckling. commendable actions — Kae (@OhItsJustKaelyn) March 5, 2019

Jesus Take The Wheel: Arizona Teacher Allegedly Had Sex With Sixth Grader While Other Student Watched

Source: Mint Images / Getty Teacher Accused Of Having A Relationship With Sixth Grade Student Last year, a teacher in Arizona allegedly coerced and assaulted a 13-year-old student at Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear when she was 27. At the time, police released texts between Zamora and the student following her arrest in March 2018–but now, Arziona Republic reports that more disturbing details in the case have since been revealed. When speaking with a police interviewer, the 13-year-old said that he couldn’t recall at what point his interactions with the teacher started to escalate to the alleged assault. “She said she wanted to give me a blow job and my stuff is really big and stuff like that,” he explained. He also said that one day during a parent-teacher meeting, the 27-years-old hugged and kissed him. The teacher, Brittany Zamora, allegedly engaged in sexual activity with the student at the back of the classroom while other students were there watching videos. During the interview, he said that she would often pretend to drop something or look for stuff at her desk and she would “touch his stuff.” He added that he would also send her notes during class that explained what he wanted to do, also proclaiming his love for her. The situation continued for weeks until one day, when he was staying at his grandparents’ house, he snuck out to meet her in her car, where they performed oral sex on one another. The next night, the sixth grader said they engaged in intercourse. Though Zamora told him not to tell anyone what happened, he later ended up telling a friend. A friend of the victim said that he saw the two have sex in her classroom while he was told to be a lookout. “They were just doing it,” he revealed. “It was very uncomfortable… It’s, like, weird how a 27-year-old can, like, love a 13-year-old and do stuff. It’s just crazy. She’s not a good person.” The two of them asked the friend to stand watch the next day, but he refused and left. The 13-year-old told the friend that he had sex with his teacher again after he refused to stand watch a second time. Now, the victim’s parents are reportedly suing Zamora, her husband, and the school district for $2.5 million in damages.

Jesus Take The Lunch Money: Student Threatened To Reveal Affair With Teacher If She Didn’t Pay Him $140

Source: ozgurcankaya / Getty High Schooler Reveals Affair With Teacher After She Wouldn’t Pay Him $140 According to Fox 13 Memphis , a former teacher is being accused of sexual contact with a Trezevant High School student. Jasmine Edmond reportedly exchanged more than 200 text messages with the student and had told the principal of the high school that the student was trying to blackmail her, according to legal documents. An email from Trezevant’s principal states the school was aware of the 239 texts with the student threatening to expose the relationship unless Edmond gave him money. “You Said We Had A Bet & If You Lie Our Little Secret Going To Be Out There,” the message read. “That’s Not A Threat It’s A Promise.” When Edmonds presumably didn’t respond, the teen sent the following message, “Then You Not Trying To Answer Or Text Back I Got Proof of Everything So 140 Tomorrow Or Your Career Over On My Grandma.” Records reveal the 16-year-old was allegedly expelled from Trezevant High School in early 2018 for throwing rocks at her car. Edmonds had been a guest at the teen’s family’s Thanksgiving as the boy’s mother knew Edmonds “did not have family nearby”, but the mother of the student claimed that she “didn’t have any knowledge” of her son and Edmonds’ relationship. Edmond was indicted by a grand jury in November 2018. Memphis Police are expected to charge her in January with sexual contact with a minor.

Cellphone video showed the student taunting Riley, calling him the N-word and cursing at him. The fight allegedly  began after the teacher said the student was not wearing the proper school uniform, the witness told the station. The student responded with racist comments. “It was just back and forth, back and forth, and then the teacher just decided to throw a punch and that’s when everything happened,” the witness said. A  GoFundMe page  has been created by the teacher’s supporters to raise money for his legal fees. They say he’s been physically or verbally attacked in the past. WTF? Student Parades Around L.A. School As KKK Imperial Wizard In Teacher-Approved History Project

Stock Image by Getty Student Dressed As Racist Ku Klux Klan Wizard Causes Upset A Los Angeles Unified School District student dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Klan for a school project, and students say they don’t understand why the teacher approved the decision. According to ABC7 , photos posted to social media show the unnamed kid dressed head to toe as a KKK member on Friday. Reportedly, the student wearing the garb is a freshman who chose to write about Hiram Wesley Evans, a former imperial wizard of the KKK, for his history project. That student decided to wear a costume representing the racist leader. Other students also dressed in costumes reflecting their chosen historical figure as well,  folks say this specific one was out of line. “He wore it like throughout the school, like in nutrition, lunch, things like that. I don’t think that’s appropriate,” said Lance Dantignac, a rising senior at the school. “It made me feel like unsafe and threatened,” said Eliza Dumag, another rising senior. And get this, the teacher said it was OK…because The Klan and The Black Panther Party are equal… “It kind of rattled me. It was hard to believe that she would allow a klansman to walk around from her approval. So, we asked her, and she said that, she compared the Klan to the Black Panther Party, which in my opinion are two different things,” said Trinity Young, a rising senior. “So yeah, it was troubling.” Meanwhile, LAUSD released a statement, saying in part: “L.A. Unified and Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy understand the extreme sensitivity around this issue and do not condone or support this type of re-enactment.” The district statement also included an apology to the LAUSD community. It said an investigation is now underway, and that the district and school both are committed to supporting diversity.

Syllabus Trippin’: Atlanta Teacher Accused Of Murdering 2 Children Is Allegedly A Crip

Image via Photo by Robert Nickelsberg/Getty Images Atlanta Teacher Accused Of Being A Child-Killing Crip This is a perfectly good reason AGAINST arming teachers with guns . According to WSBTV , a teacher at a Dekalb County in Atlanta has been accused of murdering two children in 2016, an 11-year-old girl and her 15-year-old brother. The siblings lost their lives during what police describe as gang-related gunfire. Documents obtained by the station show that police have pegged the fifth grade teacher, 26-year-old Michael De’Sean White, as member of the Crips. His lawyers denies this: He became a teacher because he wanted to help students. He loved kids,” Fegan said. “He is not gang affiliated.” Not for nothing, the way these teachers are set up, sexing kids and all that, it doesn’t see so far-fetched that this guy could be a crip. Here’s what the police have to say: “His role is not yet completely defined but we can confirm he was present when the homicides took place,” Roberts said. “We hope to bring some solace and resolve to that family.” White is obviously not working at the school while the investigation is pending. No word on if he will be allowed to return to work if exonerated. R.I.P. to the kids who lost their lives.
