Taylor Swift Named Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainer of the Year

Katy Perry, James Franco also made the magazine’s list of 2010’s top entertainers. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images What does Taylor Swift have in common with James Franco, Katy Perry and Jon Hamm? Well, they’ve all made Entertainment Weekly ‘s Entertainers of the Year list , along with 10 other celebrities. But, the magazine has singled out Swift for its top prize, Entertainer of the Year. The magazine bestowed the honor on the singer thanks to her many accomplishments in 2010, which included multiple hit singles and Grammy wins, a super-successful tour and the #1 debut of her latest album, Speak Now , which sold more than 1 million copies in its first week alone. Speak Now gained tons of buzz in the weeks leading up to its release thanks to much discussion over which exes Swift might be singing about on the record, a subject that the pop star laughs off in the issue, which hits newsstands Friday. “Sometimes I would laugh because I would see it in print and it would say, ‘This song, which is written about her ex, so-and-so …’ And they would write about it as if it was fact,” she says. “The fact is, I haven’t ever confirmed that any song is about any particular person. There’s something kind of freeing about that. As far as I’m concerned, it’s all still up in the air.” 2010 also saw Swift finally laying to rest Kanye West’s now-infamous 2009 MTV Video Music Awards interruption by taking the stage at this year’s VMAs to sing her song “Innocent,” in which she extends her forgiveness to the rapper. “I had decided that I didn’t want to perform on the show. Or even go,” she admits. “Then I woke up in the middle of the night and I realized that I had to, and that I wanted to perform that song.” Is Taylor Swift your Entertainer of the Year? Jay-Z Says ‘Kanye Spoke What Everyone Felt’ During Hurricane Katrina

Jay tells NPR he finds it ‘strange’ the lowest point of George W. Bush’s presidency was ‘somebody talking about him.’ By Kara Warner Jay-Z Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images Jay-Z continued to promote his new book, “Decoded,” on Tuesday (November 16) with an interview on NPR’s “Fresh Air,” where he addressed many topics, including former President George W. Bush’s recent comments about Jay’s good friend Kanye West. Bush’s admission that West’s Hurricane Katrina rant was the low point of his presidency struck Jay-Z as odd. “First, I find it strange, like everyone else should, that one of his lowest points was somebody talking about him,” Jay-Z said of Kanye’s infamous “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” comment. “He’s the president. People should insult him a lot. That’s part of the job description.” He went on to reiterate an excerpt from “Decoded” in which he talks about how the mishandling of the rescue/relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina affected him. “It didn’t feel like a natural disaster; it felt like it was happening directly to blacks, and immediately those images of people in suits getting beaten, sprayed with hoses, beaten on the bridge at Selma, all these emotions were going on inside of us,” Jay said. “Kanye really spoke what everyone else felt.” The NPR interviewer also asked Jay for his evaluation of President Obama’s work thus far, and he said Bush’s legacy — “the worst eight years of our life” — was a big obstacle for Obama to overcome. “I think he’s had so many challenges,” he said. “I applaud his efforts and where he’s going. Of course, it’s not 100 percent, but you have to take into context what he inherited and what he’s working with. He’s in the negative, and if you think he can fix eight years of damage in two years, I don’t know if that’s realistic.” Do you agree with Jay-Z about President Bush’s comments? Conan O’Brien’s Fans Weigh In On TBS Move

‘I’ll watch him anywhere,’ one loyal Coco fan tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Rya Backer Conan O’Brien Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images In just under a year, Conan O’Brien has gone from the host of late-night TV’s most venerated institution to a guy attempting to launch a new show on a basic-cable channel that only recently got into the late-night game. It’s quite a turnaround for the floppy-haired comedian, and it remains to be seen if his move to TBS leads to a resurgence or irrelevance. Only time … and ratings … and talent bookings … and continued pop-culture relevance … and any number of other factors will tell. For now, all we can do is follow Conan’s live theatrical comedy tour , read his tweets and wonder what might be. Joining MTV News in such speculation are some of Conan’s fans, who were roaming Times Square after the TBS news broke and who shared their thoughts on the move with us. “I don’t really know what a TBS is,” deadpanned Kenna Udemba, neatly encapsulating Team Coco’s biggest problem as they try to attract eyeballs for the November launch of the new show. “I never really heard of it. I don’t think I’ll be watching it.” Others, however, have vowed to seek out O’Brien wherever and whenever he pops up on the boob tube. “I will totally watch Conan on TBS,” Jierra Clark declared. “I’ll watch him anywhere. He was always my favorite. I think he’s hilarious, and I miss him.” Adam Francique seconded that all-for-Coco-and-Coco-for-all sentiment. “I think he had a specific audience, not just the NBC audience,” he said. “I think his crew is going to go straight from NBC to TBS.” And once there, viewers will find a channel that’s strived to brand itself as a destination for comedy, from its syndicated offerings like “Family Guy” and “The Office” to the original show “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” to its burgeoning late-night lineup of Conan at 11 p.m. and “Lopez Tonight” at midnight. “I think it’s a good double-header,” Jessica Dub

Conan O’Brien Announces Tour

Former ‘Tonight Show’ host will kick off the ‘Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television’ tour on April 12. By Jocelyn Vena Conan O’Brien Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Conan O’Brien is ready to take his act on the road. The former late-night funnyman will go on a 30-city, two-month-long tour along with a few friendly faces. Titled the “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television” tour, a jab at the fact that he can’t appear on television until September in accordance with his exit contract with NBC, he will be joined by Andy Richter and his former late-night band. According to the Hollywood Reporter , O’Brien said of the decision to tour, “It was either a massive 30-city tour or start helping out around the house.” News of the tour first spread after a report popped up on TMZ last week. The tour kicks off April 12 in Eugene, Oregon, and O’Brien will play theaters in at least 20 states and two Canadian provinces. American Express is sponsoring the trek, and organizers say, “It promises to be a night of music, comedy, hugging and the occasional awkward silence.” O’Brien also took to Twitter to talk about the tour. “Hey Internet: I’m headed to your town on a half-assed comedy & music tour. Go to http://TeamCoco.com for tix. I repeat: It’s half-assed. Alert! Teamcoco.com is jammed with too much traffic. If you can’t get on, go to http://ticketmaster.com to buy your tickets. See you soon. We are now adding a second show in both NYC & Chicago. For that second show, I’ll be doing all Liza Minnelli songs.”

Conan O’Brien Joins Twitter

‘Today I interviewed a squirrel in my backyard and then threw to commercial,’ former ‘Tonight Show’ host joked. By Joel Hanek Conan O’Brien Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images Conan O’Brien has been lying low since his final “Tonight Show” appearance on January 22, where he performed a hilarious and heartwarming rendition of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” alongside Will Ferrell to close out the show. On Wednesday, however, the comedian broke his silence through what is currently one of the most popular mediums for celebrities: Twitter. “Today I interviewed a squirrel in my backyard and then threw to commercial,” O’Brien tweeted . “Somebody help me.” With just one tweet and less than 24 hours since signing up for the social-networking site, O’Brien has already gained over 235,000 followers. At the beginning of the year, O’Brien and his longtime employer NBC were involved in a much publicized disaccord over the future of “The Tonight Show.” After receiving low ratings due to a failed experiment that involved moving previous “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno to a 10 p.m. time slot and letting O’Brien helm the late-night staple, NBC proposed to push Leno’s new show to 11:30 and bump O’Brien’s “Tonight Show” back to 12:05 a.m. Believing that a time slot shift would “seriously damage” what Conan called “the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting,” O’Brien chose to walk away from the network with a $33 million settlement deal. The comedian sardonically joked about the ordeal in the “Bio” section of his Twitter profile: “I had a show. Then I had a different show. Now I have a Twitter account.” Conan chose to create a Twitter account just days before Jay Leno will resume hosting “The Tonight Show” on Monday, March 1. And while O’Brien has not announced any future plans to host another talk show, in January, NBC picked up a series produced by his company, Conaco . And judging from the traffic on his Twitter, it’s clear that his army of dedicated fans still care what the comedian has to say.
