Would you like bruises with that? MP Paul Gibson bashed in McDonald’s carpark … NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA…

A LABOR MP was king-hit, thrown against a car and bashed in the carpark of a suburban McDonald's. The NSW MP claimed his American assailant repeatedly told him, “This is how we do it in America” during Sunday's attack outside the fast-food restaurant in Thornleigh, in Sydney's north. Paul Gibson, who reported the incident to police, said he was lucky to survive the attack, which knocked him out. “How he didn't kill me I don't know,” he said, adding that he and a female companion were parking after a function when he gave the man sitting in the next car a “friendly toot”. The man then got out and guided Mr Gibson in. The MP for Blacktown said the man then accused him of running over his foot, before king-hitting him. He said the man grabbed him by the throat, threw him into the bonnet of a 4WD and smashed his head on the cement. Mr Gibson said the man repeatedly said “This is how we do it in America” as he pounded Mr Gibson's head. When people came to drag off the attacker, Mr Gibson said he said, “This is how we do it in Australia” and hit the man back, causing him to bleed. The pair were separated and Mr Gibson claimed he was told by a bystander that the man had a revolver. Mr Gibson and his companion, who he said was a “friend” and would not name, then made a report to police. Mr Gibson said yesterday: “I got out and he said, 'You ran over my foot'. I said, 'Mate, if I ran over your foot, I'm sorry, are you OK?' “I went to walk into McDonald's – the next thing I know I'm in la la land. I didn't know if I'd had a heart attack or what. “Next thing I knew I'm flying through the air. Everyone tells me this bloke's come up, punched me in the back of the head, grabbed me by the throat. “I could hear him say, 'This is how we do it in America, this is how we do it in America.' How he didn't kill me I don't know.” Mr Gibson said he was close to losing consciousness during the attack and has since had X-rays to identify whether he had a broken shoulder and ribs. Police are appealing for information to identify the attacker. The man police want to speak to was “of African American appearance, 185-187cm tall, an acne-scarred complexion and with a solid build”. added by: eden49

Unemployment extension and jobs bills get another chance

At the end of May, 1.2 million Americans—including 100,000 Pennsylvanians—lost their unemployment compensation benefits and 200,000 more drop from the rolls each week. They had been receiving benefits through the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program after their regular state benefits expired last year. Last week, Senate Republicans stabbed those Americans in the back when they blocked a vote to extend unemployment benefits to the end of this year. Fortunately on Tuesday, Senate Democrats introduced new bills to extend benefits, create jobs, and support small businesses. Democrats will have to fight hard to get it past yet another filibuster. Once again, the Republicans showed their true colors. http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-14931-Pittsburgh-Public-Policy-Examiner~y2010… added by: patomalley

Why California should vote No

There are numerous studies that exist that present the long-term ill effects of smoking marijuana. Let it be clear on my position that anyone who promotes willful destruction of self through recreational smoking of marijuana is a complete and utter fool. Some important stats to be aware of: -Smoking marijuana has 50-70% more carcinogens than tobacco smoke and usually more than 400 chemicals added -Harm to lungs is similar to that of long-term tobacco use -Lowers the immune system and makes people more succeptible to disease -May make health problems such as heart disease worse. Marijuana makes the heart work harder -There is a chance of increased risk of head and neck cancers and mental illnesses such as depression and schizoprhenia. -Marijuana accumulates in the microscopic nerve spaces between nerve cells in the brain called synapses. This clogging interferes by slowing and impairing transfer of critical information. The list goes on and on. Moral of my crusade… Sure, marijuana is safer than crack, but that sure as heck does not mean we should endorse smoking it. The Harvard study attached even suggest we should be careful in who we give it for medical treatment. I agree with this judgment. If the person is dying from terminal cancer, let them enjoy. Otherwise, there is absolutely no reason why anyone in their right mind should touch such a dispicable and harmful drug. http://www.hsc.mb.ca/addictions/Media/Harmful20of%20Marijuana.pdf http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/evidence99/marijuana/Health_1.html added by: dkl165

Texas GOP Platform Bans Homosexuality

Texas Republicans recently unveiled a policy platform that includes a statement of support for legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to same-sex couples as well as for an official to perform a marriage ceremony for gay partners wishing to wed. The 25-page proposal debuted last week as a guiding light for the state GOP over the next two years defines its position by saying: Marriage Licenses – We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for such. The proposal from Republicans in the Lone Star state makes the following claims related to the party's view of homosexuality: – “We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases.” – “Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have beenordained by God, recognized by our country's founders, and shared by the majority of Texans.” – “Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable “alternative” lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should “family” be redefined to include homosexual “couples.” The recently rolled-out platform from the Texas GOP has also come under scrutiny for advocating to outlaw all “sexually-oriented businesses” — including strip clubs and “all pornography” — while allowing virtually unrestricted access to oil and gas drilling. story from huffington post http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/22/texas-gop-platform-advoca_n_619601.html The 2010 platform from the Republican Party of Texas can be found here. http://static.texastribune.org/media/documents/FINAL_2010_STATE_REPUBLICAN_PARTY… video from newsy http://www.newsy.com/videos/texas-gop-platform-bans-homosexuality/ added by: Stoneyroad

The Russian Spy Caper: So Funny, Except When It’s Not

Leave it to the Russians to not understand that the Cold War is dead and buried. The 10 alleged deep-cover operatives who were arrested on Monday may number more spies than were here in the 1950s, when there was a real possibility of war between the U.S. and Russia. (An 11th suspect was apprehended in Cyprus but released on bail.) You have to wonder what the Russians could have been thinking to spend the tens of millions of dollars that such an espionage infrastructure costs. Were they planning for a new Cold War? The other odd thing is that the suspected Russian operatives seem to have been stuck with a Cold War spy's craft, with secret writing, dead drops and money stashes. What was wrong with flying to Europe to meet your control officer once a month? On top of that, there was a comic sloppiness to the whole operation. At one point, an undercover FBI agent introduced himself to one of the suspects, claiming to be a substitute-control officer. Not only did the alleged Russian operative fall for it, she didn't notice that afterward, she was followed by more undercover FBI agents to a Verizon store, where they observed her buying a prepaid phone card. They then observed her as she apparently dropped the Verizon bag into a trash can — with the receipt in it. The name on it was Irene Kutsov — not the Americanized alias she reportedly used in the U.S. — and the address “99 Fake Street.” Indeed, the suspects were not charged with espionage but, much less glamorously, conspiring to act as unauthorized foreign agents and conspiring to commit money laundering. Moscow has called the accusations baseless. Read more: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2000396,00.html?xid=rss-topstorie… added by: Sexirobot

Larry King, The Iconic TV Interviewer, Will Step Aside from Hosting his Prime-Time CNN Show

Larry King, the iconic TV interviewer, will step aside from hosting his prime time CNN show later this year, he says. June 29, 2010 Statement from Larry King Posted: 07:10 PM ET Before I start the show tonight, I want to share some personal news with you. 25 years ago, I sat across this table from New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast of Larry King Live. Now, decades later, I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games. I’ll still be a part of the CNN family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects. I’m incredibly proud that we recently made the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest running show with the same host in the same time slot. With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders. added by: EthicalVegan

Programmable Matter Takes Shape with Self-Folding Origami Sheets

June 28, 2010 | 1 comments Shifty Science: Programmable Matter Takes Shape with Self-Folding Origami Sheets A prototype sheet that folds itself into two different shapes may lead to objects that can assume any number of forms on command By John Matson Self-folding robotic sheet SHAPE-SHIFTER: The segmented sheet created by researchers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can fold itself into a boat or an airplane shape in a matter or seconds. The Harvard Microrobotics Lab Researchers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) have invented a real-life Transformer, a device that can fold itself into two shapes on command. The system is hardly ready to do battle with the Decepticons—the tiny contraption forms only relatively crude boat and airplane shapes—but the concept could one day produce chameleonlike objects that shift between any number of practical shapes at will. Self-folding sheets are just one facet of programmable matter, the attempt to build structures that can shape-shift on demand. The idea, says study co-author Daniela Rus, a roboticist at M.I.T., is bringing materials and machines closer together to make everyday objects that can be programmed, much like people program a computer. “Instead of programming bits and bytes,” she says, “you program mechanical properties of the object.” The system, described in a paper published online this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, consists of a thin sheet of resin–fiberglass composite, just a few centimeters across, segmented into 32 triangular panels separated by flexible silicone joints. Some of the joints have heat-sensitive actuators that bend 180 degrees when warmed by an electric current, folding the sheet over at that joint. Depending on the program used, the sheet will conduct a series of folds to yield the boat or airplane shape in about 15 seconds. The folding-sheet approach is an extension of the field of computational origami, the mathematical study of how flat objects can be folded into complex, three-dimensional structures. Although the design presented in the new paper takes only two shapes, the researchers say that in principle the system could produce many more. “We were looking for ways to embed a bunch of different functionalities into one low-profile sheet,” says study co-author Robert Wood, an electrical engineer at Harvard University's Microrobotics Laboratory. “In the longer run we'd like to develop systems to bring this not to just three, four or five shapes but to a much greater scope of different achievable shapes.” Given a set of desired three-dimensional shapes, the group's algorithms determine how to fold the sheet to produce each of the final shapes and then how to accommodate those different folding sequences on a shared sheet. Another algorithm optimizes the sheet for its desired purpose, limiting the number of embedded actuators needed to produce the final shapes. On the airplane–boat prototype sheet, for instance, only half the joints have actuators. The researchers note that although the algorithms produce a workable folding pattern to make a given shape, human experts are often able to design a more efficient scheme. “It doesn't know how to get creative, and sometimes human origamists can see a few moves ahead, like a chess player,” Rus says. “You see patterns that are not obvious to a computer program that does a step-by-step process.” In the near term Rus envisions the computational origami technology forming the basis of three-dimensional display systems—for instance, maps that can reproduce the topography of a given region on demand. “You can imagine making machines that have the ability to give you three-dimensional views of the objects they render,” she says. In the more distant future programmable matter applications might move beyond mere shape mimicry to involve programmable optical, electric or acoustic properties.
