Nick Cannon, Zoe Saldana And More Remember ‘Drumline’ 15 Years Later

Continued here:

Source: Daniel Zuchnik / Getty Did you know  Drumline was inspired by the life of super producer Dallas Austin ? Or that director Charles Stone III ‘s only major credits before shooting  Drumline  were for  Paid In Full  and the Budweiser “Whassup” commercial ? The Undefeated interviewed Nick Cannon , Orlando Jones ,  Zoe Saldana  and more for an in-depth look at the making and legacy of   the classic HBCU coming-of-age story. Here’s how far the studio went to make sure a White character was included: Jody Gerson (Producer): The studio kept focusing on a white character. That we had to have a white character to market the movie. Dallas Austin ( Executive producer film and soundtrack, music supervisor):  I got a call from Fox. They said, ‘Dallas, we don’t know how to say this, but put white people in the movie.’ I said, ‘OK, how many white people do you want?’ They said, ‘We want somebody in the band. … We have to have a character, because now it’s turning into a black movie.’ Charles Stone III ( Director):  The studio wanted a white character in the midst of this ensemble of color in order to support or give us the amount of money we wanted. We needed $20 million to make it. They were offering us $15 million. Dallas: First, it was a $13 million movie, which is a lot for an urban film, so to speak, at that time. I was trying to tell them, it’s not an urban film, it’s a story … it’s a team story. We started going over $13 million, because nobody knew what it was like to film 300-piece marching bands. Charles Stone III:   In order for me to get the additional $5 million, I had to create a white character. Dallas:  I said, ‘Let me see how a white kid’s story would be inside of a black marching band without making it ridiculous.’ I go to Morris Brown College one day, and I see this kid. He’s one of the cymbal players, a white kid with red hair. I said, ‘Where’d you come from?’ He said, ‘In Atlanta, down the street. I’ve always wanted to be in the band because I grew up in the neighborhood.’ We followed that story into GQ’s character. Jayson Flore (GQ):  I got this appointment for Drumline … and Charles was like, ‘Hey, can you play the drum?’ … I wasn’t trained growing up, playing the drums, but I’m a musician. So I saw the question as, ‘Do you have rhythm?’ I’m like, ‘Fuck yeah, I got rhythm.’ It’s funny that I ended up getting the role where the guy has rhythm issues. Read the full feature here . Read more here:

Source: Pedro Gomes / Getty Azealia Banks is at again with her public call outs. This time she has some words for music artist M.I.A , calling her “anti-Black.” It all started when M.I.A vented on Instagram about her relationship with former producer and ex-boyfriend Diplo . She denied that Diplo (real name Thomas Wesley Pentz ) is the reason for her success.  “It’s important you don’t see me as a lil thing diplo discovered because I’m a brown woman,” she wrote. “and this is the first story of a brown female musician who smashed it for the first time. That didn’t happen because I accidentally walked passed diplo.” When talking about her success M.I.A, who is of Sri Lankan Tamil descent, also said, “There was no label no A N R no channels. a handful of people believed in me , then when I got a deal , they turned on me. This was why i forged my own path and style and genre. I didn’t want anyone to say they made me!” Azealia peeped M.I.A’s words and challenged the idea that she was completely original. See the rant below: Mia be lowkey trying to take credit for black culture and the shit is annoying. She's like clearly quite anti-black —

13 Reasons to Be Hopeful About the Next Four Years

It is official: As of January 20, 2017, Donald Trump is the President of the United States . And while this (not so) simple fact has left many Americans way down in the doldrums, The Hollywood Gossip is here to try and make you feel better. For the following reasons, the next four years might not be so terrible after all… 1. Star Wars: Episode VIII But who’s countinr, right? 2. More Alec Baldwin on SNL! It beats him screaming at reporters, doesn’t it? 3. The Kylie Jenner Sex Tape You know it’s coming. And you know Kylie will deny playing any role in its release. 4. The Kimye Divorce You also know it’s coming. And the fallout will be epic. This may be how Kim finally breaks the Internet for real. 5. The Americans is Returning! Season 5 of the most underrated show on television premieres on March 7. (Wait… this drama is about Russian spies who have infiltrated America. Dammit.) 6. The Midterm Elections We’ll have a chance to reorganize the government and balance out Congress in 2018. It’s not to soon to get involved. View Slideshow

Miguel Ferrer Dies; NCIS: Los Angeles Star Was 61

You may not recognize the name Miguel Ferrer, but if you’re a fan of film and television, you’re almost certainly familiar with his work. Ferrer passed away today at the age of 61, but the respected “actor’s actor” and first cousin of George Clooney leaves behind a body of work that will endure for generations. Ferrer racked up more than 120 credits over the course of his 36 years in the industry. As a young man, he embarked on a career in music, playing drums for Keith Moon’s debut solo effort. It wasn’t long, however, before Hollywood came calling and Ferrer quickly found work as a character actor in a number of “tough guy” roles. Though he starred in films as varied as RoboCop, Traffic, and Iron Man 3, it is for his work in several long-running TV series for which Ferrer will likely be best remembered. Ferrer stole scenes in recurring roles on Miami Vice, Twin Peaks, Tales From the Crypt, Desperate Housewives, Crossing Jordan, and NCIS: Los Angeles. His talent for playing gruff cops and crooks made him a go-to favorite for crime dramas – as well as for projects that skewered the genre.  Ferrer’s distinctive voice earned him frequent high-profile animation gigs in features like Mulan and Rio 2, as well as in beloved series such as Adventure Time and Robot Chicken. NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner R. Scott Gemmill issued a statement to the press just moments after news of Ferrer’s death went public. “Today, NCIS: Los Angeles lost a beloved family member,” Gemmill wrote. “Miguel was a man of tremendous talent who had a powerful dramatic presence on screen, a wicked sense of humor, and a huge heart. Our thoughts go out to his wife Lori, his sons, and his entire family. “He will be greatly missed.” Sources say Ferrer died peacefully at his California home this afternoon, surrounded by family and friends. He was active on NCIS and in several other projects up until the time when his illness left him bed-ridden. Ferrer was scheduled to appear in the Showtime reboot of Twin Peaks debuting in May, but it is not known if he had completed filming. Ferrer’s expansive body of work and reputation as one of Hollywood’s most genuine nice guys combined to make him a trending topic on Twitter just moments after the world learned of his death. The actor is survived by wife Lori, and sons Lukas and Rafi. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten

Kelly Clarkson Looks Back on American Idol: It Was Amazing!

Kelly Clarkson has had a wonderful career that has spanned over fourteen years.  Clarkson won the first season of American Idol back in 2002. It’s crazy to think that she’s still as relevant as today as she was back then.  Her career has continued to flourish, but Idol did not.  The singing competition finally concluded earlier this year after 15 seasons. That’s a great run for any series.  You’d think singing competitions would be a bit long in the tooth by now, but NBC continues to find success with two cycles of The Voice every year.  Granted, there always seems to be some sort of rift with the judges on the show, but it drums up good ratings.  Clarkson has enjoyed a lot of success throughout her career. She’s the first artist from the show to achieve 100 Billboard number 1 hit singles.  Yes, that means the star has topped the chart at least 100 times.  That’s not an easy task for anyone, so she deserves a lot of recognition for that.  That said, Kelly is not about to forget where she came from. She knows American Idol gave her the career she has today.  Joining singing competitions was the best way to get noticed in 2002. There was no Youtube for artists to go viral back in those days.  Kelly took to Twitter to express her gratitude to the once hot Fox series.  Kelly Clarkson Brings Everyone to Tears on American Idol “14 yrs ago 2day @AmericanIdol opened a door w/such amazing opportunities & experiences 4 me!” the 34-year-old singer wrote on Twitter on Sunday, September 4. “I am 4ever grateful & blessed! #heresto14more.” There’s every reason to believe that Clarkson will still be topping the charts in fourteen years. She really does have staying power and it’s not often an artist can continue to top the charts after all this time.  Kelly recently signed a major record deal with Atlantic Records, so at least we know she’ll continue to release great music.  View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Welcomed Babies in 2016 She also welcomed a son in April of this year, but she will be back with new music very soon.  It just goes to show that even though the final few seasons of American Idol were terrible, the show still served a huge purpose.  It gave the likes of Kelly Clarkson a start in an industry that’s very difficult to become a star in.  Clarkson even appeared on the final season of the Fox hit, but apparently Carrie Underwood was not impressed .  Underwood was given a smaller segment than Clarkson.  This peeved Underwood because she knows she is the bigger money maker of the two.  What do you think of all of this? Nick Menza Dies; Former Megadeth Drummer Was 51

Nick Menza, a musician best known as the drummer of Megadeth in the 1990s, died Saturday after reportedly collapsing on stage during a Los Angeles concert. He was 51 years old. According to CNN and other outlets, Menza was playing drums with his band OHM at The Baked Potato on Saturday night, May 21 when he suddenly collapsed during the third song of the set. Paramedics arrived on the scene, but were unable to revive him after trying for 45 minutes. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Here is what a statement by Menza’s management team said soon after the tragedy took place. “Nick collapsed during the third song into a set with his band OHM. “Earliest reports indicate he suffered a massive heart attack and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.” The Los Angeles venue itself was among the first to address the sad situation, writing, “RIP Nick Menza,” on its Facebook page. View Slideshow: 26 Musicians Who Died Too Young Menza joined Megadeth in 1989 and played on four albums before leaving in 1998. Upon learning of the news on Sunday morning, the band’s co-founder, Dave Muscatine, took to Twitter to mourn his former bandmate. “TELL ME THIS ISN’T TRUE!” he wrote. “I woke at 4 AM to hear Nick Menza passed away on 5/21 playing his drums w/Ohm at the Baked Potato. #nickmenzarip.” Former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman also jumped on media to grieve Menza’s passing. “We all know the great and unique drummer that Nick Menza was, but he was also a trustworthy friend, a hilarious bandmate, as well as a very loving dad,” he wrote, adding: “I’m beyond sad, did not see this coming at all. RIP Brother.” We send our thoughts and prayers to the loved ones of Nick Menza. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten
