Miguel Ferrer Dies; NCIS: Los Angeles Star Was 61

You may not recognize the name Miguel Ferrer, but if you’re a fan of film and television, you’re almost certainly familiar with his work. Ferrer passed away today at the age of 61, but the respected “actor’s actor” and first cousin of George Clooney leaves behind a body of work that will endure for generations. Ferrer racked up more than 120 credits over the course of his 36 years in the industry. As a young man, he embarked on a career in music, playing drums for Keith Moon’s debut solo effort. It wasn’t long, however, before Hollywood came calling and Ferrer quickly found work as a character actor in a number of “tough guy” roles. Though he starred in films as varied as RoboCop, Traffic, and Iron Man 3, it is for his work in several long-running TV series for which Ferrer will likely be best remembered. Ferrer stole scenes in recurring roles on Miami Vice, Twin Peaks, Tales From the Crypt, Desperate Housewives, Crossing Jordan, and NCIS: Los Angeles. His talent for playing gruff cops and crooks made him a go-to favorite for crime dramas – as well as for projects that skewered the genre.  Ferrer’s distinctive voice earned him frequent high-profile animation gigs in features like Mulan and Rio 2, as well as in beloved series such as Adventure Time and Robot Chicken. NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner R. Scott Gemmill issued a statement to the press just moments after news of Ferrer’s death went public. “Today, NCIS: Los Angeles lost a beloved family member,” Gemmill wrote. “Miguel was a man of tremendous talent who had a powerful dramatic presence on screen, a wicked sense of humor, and a huge heart. Our thoughts go out to his wife Lori, his sons, and his entire family. “He will be greatly missed.” Sources say Ferrer died peacefully at his California home this afternoon, surrounded by family and friends. He was active on NCIS and in several other projects up until the time when his illness left him bed-ridden. Ferrer was scheduled to appear in the Showtime reboot of Twin Peaks debuting in May, but it is not known if he had completed filming. Ferrer’s expansive body of work and reputation as one of Hollywood’s most genuine nice guys combined to make him a trending topic on Twitter just moments after the world learned of his death. The actor is survived by wife Lori, and sons Lukas and Rafi. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten

Gary Glasberg Dies; NCIS Creator Was 50

Gary Glasberg, a giant in the world of television, passed away on Wednesday of unknown causes. He was 50 years old. CBS confirmed the news to Variety, saying Glasberg died in his sleep. No other information is available at this time. At the time of his death, Glasberg was serving as the showrunner of television’s most-watched program, NCIS. He also created its spinoff, NCIS: New Orleans, which premiered in 2014 and worked as a producer on NCIS: Los Angeles. Stunned by the news, the NCIS cast released the following statement on Twitter in response to Glasberg’s passing: “Gary was our rock, our cheerleader, our team captain. He inspired us with his leadership, his creative instincts and keen insight. “NCIS will not be the same without him, and each of us will miss his smiling face and unwavering humor, which lifted us every day.” Glasberg worked on award-winning shows for seven years. Glasberg began his TV career in 1993, penning episodes of Rugrats and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In 2001, he wrote what would be the first of multiple scripts for NBC’s Crossing Jordan, on which he eventually was named a co-producer. He then went on to serve as a co-executive producer on CBS’ The Mentalist and Shark, along with Bones on Fox. He is survived by his wife, screenwriter Mimi Schmir, and two sons, Dash and Eli, as well as his mother and father. Said CBS Entertainment president Glen Geller via statement: “Today is an overwhelmingly sad day for NCIS, CBS and anyone who was blessed to spend time with Gary Glasberg. We have lost a cherished friend, gifted creative voice, respected leader and, most memorably, someone whose warmth and kindness was felt by all around him.” CBS Television Studios boss David Stapf went on to remember Glasberg as someone who “epitomized the word mensch and brought kindness, integrity and class to everything he did. “His remarkable talent as a writer and producer was only matched by his ability to connect with people.” View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten NCIS and Bull star Michael Weatherly, who played Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo on the hit drama for 13 seasons before departing last year, mourned Glasberg’s loss via a tweet on Wednesday, along with his other ex-cast members. “What sad a day this is,” Weatherly wrote. “Gary Glasberg was a gentle man and gentleman loved by so many people. Send your love to his family.” Added Pauley Perrette, who plays Abby on NCIS: “Our hearts are collectively broken. Our #NCIS show runner and boss Gary Glasberg has passed away. In shock and sadness. There are no words.” Jon Cryer, who guest starred on the wildly popular television series, also expressed his own disbelief over social media, writing: “Gary brought me into #NCIS. I’m stunned to hear this. So grateful that I got to work with him.” A memorial service is reportedly being planned for early next month. Glasberg’ is survived by his wife, screenwriter Mimi Schmir, and two sons, Dash and Eli, along with his mother and father. May he rest in peace.

Lindsay Lohan Claims BRAKES FAILED, Caused Crash

Lindsay Lohan. What she won’t think of next. The star is telling her friends that the BRAKES ON HER RENTED PORSCHE DID NOT WORK properly, thus causing her serious car accident Friday. Lohan slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler and is thankfully okay, as is the truck driver and the personal assistant traveling with Lindsay. It seems like the blame game is being played once again, however, as LiLo claimed the semi cut her off … and the truck driver says otherwise. Lindsay says that after the truck cut her off, she claims she slammed on the brakes and … nothing happened! Somehow – this is the best – Lindsay also says she was told the Porsche’s brakes on the rental were replaced two days before the crash. Is Lindsay Lohan subtly implying someone wanted her dead and cut her brakes so she’d crash?!? That sounds like a plot from NCIS: Los Angeles . Someone ought to write a Lohan Book of Excuses, because there have really been some all-timers, but in any case, she says she’s lucky to be alive. As for the guy driving the truck Lindsay smashed into? James (last name withheld) says her account is – you guessed it – a complete lie and he has the witnesses to prove it was all LiLo’s fault. James emphatically denied cutting her off and claims he has multiple witnesses that saw the actress “flying” down the Pacific Coast Highway. He says he couldn’t possibly have cut Lohan off because he was already in the right lane when the accident, which totaled her car, occurred. What’s more, he said Lindsay’s camp tried to bribe him at the scene of the accident in an effort to keep him quiet about the event. Lohan was also trying to flee the scene , he claims, and when he tried to stop her from doing so, her people tried to buy his silence. Sounds a little far-fetched … but you never know with Lindsay. Bottom line, girl, you make a lot of money. Just hire a freaking driver. [Photo: WENN.com]

LL Cool J’s Journey From ‘Krush Groove’ To The Grammys

LL Cool J will become the second hip-hop artist to host the Grammy Awards on Sunday. By Rob Markman LL Cool J in the mid-1980s Photo: Paul Natkin/ WireImage Box. All it took was a simple three-letter word to jumpstart the illustrious career of a hip-hop legend. LL Cool J was unknown when he made a cameo in the 1985 film “Krush Groove” but it wouldn’t be long before the rap world began buzzing about the 16-year old boy in the baby-blue Kangol. In the flick, which was based off the formative years of seminal hip-hop record label Def Jam, LL walked into an office to showcase his talents for label brass and top talent Run-DMC. After he was denied an audition, the Hollis, Queens MC simply said, “Box,” signaling his entourage to cue the oversized boombox and start the music. It was then that LL began rapping his debut single “I Can’t Live Without My Radio,” an ode to the ghetto blasters that ruled the 1980s. Fast forward 27 years and that cocky kid in the baby-blue bucket hat has conquered every avenue in music, set new benchmarks in Hollywood and is now hosting the 54th Annual Grammy Awards . But LL Cool J (born James Todd Smith) isn’t the first hip-hop artist to host the Grammys. Queen Latifah had the honor before him, but the Grammys didn’t officially start recognizing hip-hop as a legitimate genre until 1989, when DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand” won for the untelevised Best Rap Performance. Hip-hop has certainly come a long way. “When we first started the music, they didn’t even play it on the radio in the daytime,” LL told MTV News in October when he walked the carpet at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards , acknowledging the network for dedicating an entire show to rap music. “Hip-hop was two hours at night or an hour at night on the weekends, and that was it. So to go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows and whole generations of people whose lives have been changed just because they’re involved with the music, that’s a big thing.” Just as hip-hop has grown, so has Smith. Back in the 1980s, when he first started his career, many considered rap to only be a passing fad. (MCs who clocked more than three albums in their discographies were thought to be anomalies.) LL has put out 14 albums if you include his two greatest hits LPs, 1996’s All World and 2009’s All World 2. There was his classic 1985 debut Radio and his critically acclaimed 1990 album Mama Said Knock You Out, which spawned the Grammy Award-winning single of the same name. In the mid-1990s, he once again proved his dominance with Mr. Smith and took his hit-making skills into the new millennium with his 2002 single “Luv U Better” off of his 10 album. Check out photos of LL throughout his career! If Uncle L’s music accolades aren’t enough, his strides in Hollywood have surely made him not just a hip-hop icon, but a permanent fixture in American pop culture. He started in “Krush Groove” with a brief cameo playing himself, but quickly followed up with an appearance in Goldie Hawn’s “Wildcats” the next year. Since then, he has starred in major motion pictures like “Deep Blue Sea” with Samuel L. Jackson, “Any Given Sunday” alongside Al Pacino and “S.W.A.T.” with Colin Farrell. LL also held it down in his own television series, “In the House,” and now stars as Special Agent Sam Hanna in the police drama “NCIS: Los Angeles.” It’s been quite a ride for LL Cool J, and when music fans watch him Sunday night at the Grammys, they will surely see a well-accomplished musician, actor and business man, while those who have followed since day one will see that 16-year-old kid in the baby-blue Kangol and say, “Wow, he’s come a long way.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And the fun doesn’t end Sunday: MTV News has you covered for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off!
