Will Alien-Free Marketing, Lack of 3D, and Tonal Ambiguity Make Cowboys & Aliens a Tough Sell?

When it comes to conventions, Jon Favreau is nothing if not a man of the nerd people. Mindful of how much he owes to the Comic-Con faithful for jump-starting early word of mouth on the Iron Man franchise, he came to San Francisco this weekend with a treat: Nine minutes of footage from Cowboys & Aliens cut exclusively for the WonderCon audience, including a special reveal of the film’s big, bad aliens — aliens that Favreau otherwise intends to keep under wraps.

Jon Favreau Explains ‘Iron Man 3’ Departure

Director says he’s looking forward to returning to family fare with ‘Magic Kingdom.’ By Eric Ditzian Jon Favreau Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Wherever Tony Stark goes from here, he will be traveling without the assistance of Jon Favreau. The two-time “Iron Man” director walked away from the franchise on Tuesday, choosing instead to direct a family-oriented Disney film and emphasizing that his relationship with Disney-owned Marvel Entertainment and its studio chief Kevin Feige remains strong. “Marvel and I both came of age together,” Favreau said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in.” Favreau is leaving behind the “Iron Man” franchise, which grossed $1.2 billion worldwide under his guidance, to direct “Magic Kingdom,” a film about a family that gets trapped in Disneyland and has all manner of magical encounters with the park’s attractions. Ditching Tony Stark and embracing Mickey Mouse, Favreau said, gives him the opportunity to “find something that lights a fire” within him and can “blow people away, which is easier to do with a project that isn’t loaded with built-in expectations.” The move marks a return of sorts for Favreau, who directed family-oriented fare like “Elf” and “Zathura” before being recruited, somewhat surprisingly, to direct Marvel’s 2008 “Iron Man” effort. Recapturing those early experiences is an attractive prospect for Favreau. “I can’t begin to tell you how fulfilling the perennial nature of ‘Elf’ on television has been for me,” he said. “It’s great to be able to connect parents with children both emotionally and through humor. I look forward to exploring family entertainment once again and examining the specifics of our day-to-day lives against the backdrop of an extraordinary adventure.” Favreau will remain a producer on Marvel’s 2012 adaptation of “The Avengers,” the all-star comics series in which Iron Man stars. ” ‘Iron Man’ has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the ‘Iron Man’ films,” he said.” I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

Jon Favreau Out as Iron Man 3 Director

OK, not a huge surprise considering a lot of Favreau’s recent comments about the state of Marvel Studios, but it’s still sad to read reports that Jon Favreau has decided not to direct the third chapter of the Iron Man saga. Favreau recently told MTV, “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.” So, yeah. That doesn’t sound like a guy itching to sign on for another go around. (His rep did not immediately return Moveline’s requests for comment; Deadline drew confirmation for Robert Downey Jr.’s side.) But look on the bright side: This totally creates an opening for Mike Leigh . [ Vulture ]

Jon Favreau Won’t Direct ‘Iron Man 3’

Marvel is in search of a new director for third installment of the comic book franchise, according to reports. By Kara Warner Jon Favreau on the set of “Iron Man 2” Photo: Merrick Morton/Paramount On a day when the movie industry was focused on the Golden Globe nominations , just like in the movies, Hollywood got a few surprise twists. First, Ryan Reynolds confirmed to MTV News that he and wife Scarlett Johansson are splitting. And now, word is that Jon Favreau will not return to direct “Iron Man 3.” According to New York Magazine ‘s Vulture blog, Favreau informed Marvel Studios as recently as Monday night that he would not direct the third film in the blockbuster franchise. The news is shocking considering the massive box-office success and popularity of “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2.” With few details having been made public, we can only speculate about what might have led Favreau to drop out. MTV News spoke to the director just last month, and he seemed uncertain about plans for the third film, particularly with regard to a story line and his impression that Marvel was preoccupied with “The Avengers” movie. “In theory, ‘Iron Man 3’ is going to be a sequel or continuation of ‘Thor,’ ‘Hulk,’ ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers,’ ” Favreau said. “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys. “Honestly, right now ‘Captain America’ and ‘Thor’ are their big priorities,” he continued. “And you learn things by shooting and making movies. The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go.” “Iron Man 3” is currently scheduled for a May 13, 2013, release. New York Magazine reported that Marvel began their search for Favreau’s replacement on Monday night. What do you think of Favreau parting ways with “Iron Man 3”? Tell us in the comments! Sam Rockwell on Cowboys and Aliens and Partying with Costars

It’s safe to say that Sam Rockwell and Jon Favreau enjoy a very good working relationship. Favreau gave the actor an uncredited role in his directorial debut Made , considered him to play Tony Stark in the original Iron Man , then let Rockwell do the bulk of Iron Man 2’s scene stealing as Stark’s rival Justin Hammer. At Comic-Con, Movieline spoke to Rockwell for a little while about their newest collaboration: Favreau’s sci-fi western Cowboys and Aliens .
