Radiohead Serve Up Another Legendary Bonnaroo Set

On Friday night, the icons surpass the sky-high expectations set by their 2006 festival appearance. By Mary J. DiMeglio Radiohead’s Thom Yorke performs at Bonnaroo Friday Photo: C Flanigan/ Getty Images MANCHESTER, Tennessee — With two very different albums under their belt since they last graced the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival’s farm with their fabled 2006 appearance, Radiohead more than lived up to the hype with their Friday night return at the 11th annual event. Starting out with The King of Limbs’ propulsive opening cut, “Bloom,” the icons heavily favored their newer tracks when they brought their world tour to Tennessee, also adding “Give Up the Ghost,” “Lotus Flower” and “Morning Mr Magpie” to the set. In that legendary 2006 show, during which they delighted with an epic 28 songs, they tried out six new tunes that successfully made their way onto 2007’s In Rainbows . They represented that diverse album Friday night with fan favorite “15 Step,” “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” “Nude” and “Bodysnatchers.” The recording’s “Reckoner” inspired amateur fireworks. With Amnesiac ‘s “I Might Be Wrong,” their dancy live version of Hail to the Thief ‘s “The Gloaming” and Kid A rave-up “Idioteque,” the set list was decidedly more energetic than the mellower selections they presented at the Coachella festival in April. Halfway through the set, just as casual fans were no doubt wondering whether they were going to hear anything familiar, “Karma Police” gave them the chance to participate in the “This is what you get when you mess with us” singalong. Another highlight was the “True Love Waits” lullaby seguing into “Everything In Its Right Place,” when a ponytailed Thom Yorke had everyone clapping along as he took to his keyboard. Radiohead also performed two new songs: “Identikit” and the groovy “Supercollider,” which Yorke said was “for Jack White.” As their scheduled midnight end time came and went, Yorke announced, “We bid you all farewell,” before answering the wishes of many by ending with “Paranoid Android,” dedicating it to “all the people we can’t see in the back.” Earlier in the day, Tune-yards jammed out the sax solo on “Bizness,” Sharon Jones commanded the main stage in the afternoon in a shiny bright-pink cocktail dress and Foster the People brought their feel-good tunes. Friday also featured Feist, Ludacris, Major Lazer, and Mos Def and Talib Kweli joining forces as Black Star. Jam-band mainstays Umphrey’s McGee, Flying Lotus and Dumpstaphunk, who busted out David Bowie’s “Fame,” kept fans dancing until the early morning. Still to come this weekend: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skrillex, Alice Cooper and the Roots will take the stage Saturday (June 9), and the Beach Boys, Phish, the Shins, Fun. and Bon Iver will wrap things up Sunday. Radiohead Brightens Coachella’s Second Day

Career-spanning set features icons’ newest tracks and older fan favorites. By Mary J. DiMeglio Radiohead’s Thom Yorke performs during day two of the Coachella music festival Photo: Getty Images INDIO, California — Radiohead brought their huge sound and eye-candy backdrop to the Coachella festival’s polo fields Saturday night in a fairly mellow set, heavy with cuts from their latest offering, The King of Limbs . Amidst their newest tracks — including “Morning Mr Magpie,” “Lotus Flower” and “Give Up the Ghost” — the British rock icons sprinkled tunes spanning much of their catalog, from Kid A rave-up “Idioteque” to In Rainbows’ “Bodysnatchers” and “15 Step.” Of “Karma Police,” their first classic selection of the night, singer Thom Yorke said, “You know those people who are only talking to you because they want something from you? You need to take a cold shower afterwards.” Radiohead, who last graced the polo fields in 2004, are also headlining Bonnaroo in June. The fivesome answered calls for an encore with longtime fan favorite “Lucky,” “Reckoner” and the alternately soaring and intense “Paranoid Android.” Coachella’s second day also featured Bon Iver, David Guetta, the Shins and A$AP Rocky. In response to last year’s event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — the festival is experimenting with hosting the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22. The Black Keys, Swedish House Mafia and Pulp rocked Friday’s chilly opening day . Today’s (April 15) third and final day brings Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg (rumored to contain an appearance by the late Nate Dogg as a hologram ), Florence and the Machine, Justice, Calvin Harris and the reunited At the Drive-In. T.I. And B.o.B Wave Grand Hustle Flag At SXSW

Grand Hustle artists were joined by Wale, Meek Mill, Curren$y at Warner Music showcase. By Nadeska Alexis T.I. and B.o.B perform at SXSW Photo: Universal Pictures AUSTIN, Texas — There was no shortage of options in Austin, Texas, on Thursday night if you happened to be a hip-hop fan at SXSW on the hunt for a good show. While Lil Wayne and YMCMB put their talents on display at Austin Music Hall, just five minutes down the road T.I. , B.o.B , Wale , Meek Mill and Curren$y brought down the house at the Warner Sound showcase. MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway hosted the event at La Zona Rosa, where Grand Hustle Records had a triumphant night and Maybach Music Group continued to rep their expanding roster. Curren$y, Kirko Bangz and XV got the packed house adequately warmed up for a night that easily stretched into the wee hours of Friday morning (March 16). Grand Hustle announced their arrival with B.o.B’s raucous entrance to “Beast Mode,” backed by a live band. His next number, “How Bout Dat,” commanded a fleet of backup dancers. He followed that with the upbeat single “Magic” off his debut album, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. The song faded into a dubstep beat, pushing the dancers front and center to showcase their moves before the venue finally went dark. With nothing to see or hear, the crowd hung back, wondering what would be next. That would be Mr. Grand Hustle himself. “They say Grand Hustle is in the building,” Tip announced over the mic, followed by a long pause before “I’m Back” came booming through the speakers. “Rubberband Man” was a natural choice to follow, sending the crowd soaring along with “U Don’t Know Me.” Tip took a break only to plug his upcoming eighth album, Trouble Man, which is tentatively due out this summer, before continuing with fan favorites like “What You Know” and one of his more recent singles, “Pyro.” From there, B.o.B and T.I. continued to tag-team the set, and Tip was proud to announce that this was the first time he and his signee had “done a full show together.” Playboy Tre was on hand for “Bet I Bust.” “Don’t Let Me Fall” was delivered on acoustic guitar, and T.I. even threw in “Whatever You Like” to round out Bobby Ray’s “Airplanes” and “Strange Clouds,” the title track of his upcoming album. It was already after midnight when MMG rappers Meek Mill, Stalley and Wale finally took the stage. Meek and Stalley were up first, with energetic singles like “I’ma Boss” aiming to keep the crowd going. Wale did his part to keep the energy alive, performing his hits “Lotus Flower Bomb” and “Slight Work” and commanding a guest appearance from Travis Porter. The D.C. rapper closed out the night with his street anthem “Bait” and the cult favorite “No Hands.” Related Artists T.I. B.o.B Wale Meek Mill

5 Rappers MLK Would Be Proud Of [ORIGINAL]

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dream represent a multitude of values and principles to those who remember him. He was a peaceful uniter who stood up for the rights and liberties of African-Americans. And whether you focus on Dr. King’s message of non-violence or his efforts to bring social change, his legacy represents something good. Rappers are often painted with broad brush of negativity, so it may seem antithetical to state that MLK would be proud of any of today’s MCs. But if you take the following rappers into consideration, you may change your opinion. Lupe Fiasco “Stand up for freedom…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lupe is one of the few rappers today who is relevant and unafraid to address politics and social issues in his music. Even though Lupe Fiasco’s commentary can sometimes be received as controversial, he’s made music with substance. In addition, his ability to make commercially viable songs allows his songs with more depth reach a broader audience. In an era where it’s not common to merge hip-hop and politics, Lupe Fiasco isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes in, just as Dr. King did. The King Dream Chorus And Holiday Crew: Where Are They Now? Wale “We shall overcome…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Even though he’s from the mean streets of Washington, DC; the same city where Dr. King delivered his legendary “I Have A Dream” speech; Wale music doesn’t represent that life. He resisted the temptation to rap about the streets in order to acquire universal hood credibility, and the staying non-violent has worked well for him. The biggest hits of Wale’s career (“Lotus Flower Bomb” and “That Way”) are hip-hop love songs that have not diminished his credibility. Wale doesn’t rap about political or non-violent issues, but he overcame the effects of coming up in a harsh city. Martin Luther King Jr: “I Have A Dream” Speech [VIDEO] J. Cole “The content of [his] character…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There’s nothing controversial about J. Cole. He comes across a good dude who makes great music, while leaving the violence alone. J. Cole is a bright spot in today’s hip-hop, because he’s acclaimed by critics, respected by his peers, Grammy-nominated, and he makes hits. J. Cole deserves to be celebrated for his music, but also because he’s shown good character by channeling his energy into music instead of beef. 5 Things Martin Luther King Would Be Ashamed Of Jay-Z “The crooked places will be made straight…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jay-Z acquired fortune and fame by talking about his life as a drug dealer. But now he’s known for being one of the most important voices of this generation, and now, the proud father of Blue Ivy Carter. Jay-Z started off crooked and even engaged in battles with Nas and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy. However, Jay-Z has resolved his beefs and is now a respected artist and mogul living a straight life that includes him doing charitable work. Jay-Z hasn’t been perfect, but he’s proved that Dr. King was right when he stated that the crooked can go straight. How Gil Scott-Heron And Stevie Wonder Set Up Martin Luther King Day Diggy Simmons “All men are created equal…” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diggy is an embodiment of Dr. King’s dream, in that he comes from a generation that is less color conscious than any previous generations. He’s aware of his Blackness, but doesn’t feel the need to appeal to any one race. Dr. King envisioned a world where people would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Diggy Simmons shows that this dream is already a reality for some.
