Gus Van Sant On ‘Promised Land’ & His Desire ‘To Always Work’ With Matt Damon

Promised Land is not the first nor even second collaboration between filmmaker Gus Van Sant and actor Matt Damon . Van Sant helped usher in the age of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck with their Oscar-winner Good Will Hunting back in 1997 and Damon and Ben’s younger brother, Casey Affleck worked with Van Sant in Gerry . Fast forward nearly a decade and a script Damon had been collaborating on with John Krasinski from a story by Dave Eggers set in a small town needed a director. Damon, who had originally planned to direct the feature, realized he could not because of his packed schedule, so he reached out to his old friend Gus Van Sant and the result, which will head to theaters later this month, has caught the wind of Oscar chatterers. Van Sant discussed his latest pic and why he “always wants to work with Matt” during a NYC screening of Promised Land . “The genealogy of this is that John Krasinski was observing a mining operation in Alaska and spoke to Eggers later about writing a screenplay about installing wind power,” Van Sant said at the post- Promised Land screening. “Matt Damon was going to direct [ Promised Land ] himself but then decided he didn’t have time. They thought the project might go away, but then he contacted me – and a year ago, I said yes…” Van Sant said Damon packed schedule had once kept him from playing in one of the director’s most celebrated recent films. He had originally been slated to play Dan White in the 2008 Oscar-winner Milk , but again the actor’s long queue of roles interfered. But, Promised Land posed the next opportunity and the planets aligned. “When you work together you become friends and you wonder what else you can do together again and Matt and I became friends,” said Van Sant. “I felt like we’ve had successful collaborations so the idea of doing something again was really interesting… Working with Matt on this film – I always wanted to work with him on every film.” Set in a fictitious Pennsylvania town that could represent much of small town America that has taken economic blows due to de-industrialization, agribusiness consolidation and the fallout from globalization generally, the story revolves around Steve Butler (Damon) a former farm boy turned big city business guy who teams up with Sue (Frances McDormand) to sell financial prosperity to the struggling town. The sales execs offer up easy cash in return for drilling rights on their property. Though economically hard pressed, the town, along with many others across Rust Belt states, sit atop a rich resource of natural gas once thought unreachable. But through the controversial advent of fracking (fracture drilling) the resource is recoverable though at what ecological cost is not fully known. Steve and Sue think their stay in the town will be short, but a respected schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) complicates what they think will be an easy sell when he questions the environmental risk. Steve meets a local school teacher (Rosemarie DeWitt) as they bunker down to sway in the town and things get really sticky when an environmentalist (John Krasinski) shows up and raises the stakes. “When we arrived in Pittsburgh during [pre-production] the hydraulic manufacturing companies were moving in and just happened to be having a convention at the hotel we were staying at,” Van Sant said. “So right away we had some sources we could go down and talk to. Also the people in contract talks were also the people we wanted to [scout] for locations.” The tracking process at the center of Promised Land ‘s plot has been hailed by some economic prognosticators as a short cut to energy independence while even cutting carbon emissions. But it has been criticized by others for polluting underground water-tables and even causing earthquakes in areas where they’re almost nearly unknown. Documentaries such as GasLand (2010) and others have depicted frightening scenarios of ecological degradation in the race for plentiful energy, which is not lost on Van Sant though he also sees the film as describing an even larger topic about corporations. “By default its playing into discussions that are political having fracking as a topic,” he said. “But I think the emotions of the story are about corporate maneuvering and inner corporate personnel maneuvering and it could relate to any corporation’s maneuvering including mine or Focus Features. [The film] will obviously play into politics…” [ Promised Land opens December 28 via Focus Features, trailer below.] Follow Brian Brooks on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston Chat Argo At Glittering NYC Premiere

Tuesday night was a celebrity bonanza at the Time Warner Center in New York’s Columbus Circle for the New York premiere of director/star Ben Affleck ‘s acclaimed Argo . Stars Bryan Cranston , Alan Arkin , John Goodman as well as producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov were just part of the cortege of A-listers and New York glitterati who dined at the Porter House Steakhouse where Affleck held the spotlight in the bar talking to folks. Guests were divided into two screenings of the Toronto and Telluride film festivals world premiere based on the true story about a CIA agent (Affleck) who rescues six Americans hiding in the Canadian embassy at the dawn of the Iranian hostage crisis that began in November 1979. ML caught up with actor Bryan Cranston as well as Affleck at the event. Between chatting with a parade of well-heeled well-wishers including best pal Matt Damon, Oliver Stone, Sting, Ted Koppel, Brian Williams and more, Affleck gave a little insight on what motivated him to take on the project, telling ML he decided to make Argo happen because it was a fascinating story that was also a challenge, admitting to some fear in the beginning. “I wanted to direct it because it’s a challenge directorially,” he told ML. “It has three competing challenges: It’s a comedy, it’s a nail-biting thriller and it’s a CIA-intrigue spy story. I thought if I can execute that and combine those elements and execute them, unify them and tell something that is true and maintain the integrity of the truth of the stories then I could do something quite special. It’s the favorite thing I’ve ever been involved with.” In the movie, actor Bryan Cranston plays Jack O’Donnell, one of the six Americans hiding in the Canadian Ambassador’s residence after a daring escape into the streets of the Iranian capital soon after the American embassy was overrun by angry mobs with the acquiescence of the country’s new ruler Ayatollah Khomeini. Cranston said he received the Argo script from his agent and that Affleck and producer Grant Heslov had specifically asked for him to read it. “I thought, ‘Oh that’s flattering.’ And I thought, ‘Please God, let the story be as good as the offer,'” he told ML. “And it was quite frankly even better. The story is fantastic. It’s true, important and the screenplay by Chris Terrio is great. What I took away from this and what I think what audiences will is that it’s a simple story about people being selfless and doing things for all the right reasons – just to save other human beings. There’s no greater noble effort than this.” Ahead of production, a fellow actor touted to Cranston the chance to work with Affleck who in turn put a plug in for Affleck’s work ethic and being an all-around great guy. Events such as Tuesday night’s are meant to showcase Oscar contenders in their best light. And the Peggy Siegel Company, which hosts a number of these dinners and parties tied to screenings, is front and center in organizing events for titles hitting the awards circuit. “I got a tip from Jon Hamm, who said, ‘You’re going to love working with [Affleck].’ And I went, ‘Oh good,'” said Cranston. “As an actor turned director he’s one of the best and just as a director in and of itself, he’s terrific. He’s a kind and a thoughtful man. And he’s willing to do the work. People only see the finished product, but he’s very passionate about stories.” “I didn’t want to make a story that was partisan right before the election,” Affleck said to ML about Argo and the audience he hopes will come to see it when it opens this weekend. “I want a movie that the Repubicans I know and am friends with can go see. I do not want a movie that could be politicized internationally vis-a-vis, Iran. I went to great pains to just tell a factual story with out being didactic or tell the audience what to feel.” Argo Log line: On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies. Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck ( Good Will Hunting ) directs and stars in the film, which is produced by Oscar-nominee Grant Heslov ( Good Night, and Good Luck ), Affleck, and Oscar-winner George Clooney ( Syriana ). Lonesome George Dies; Galapagos Giant Tortoise Was Over 100

Lonesome George, the last surviving giant tortoise of Pinta Island in the Galapagos Islands, has died. Scientists say he was more than 100 years old. Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say George, the only remaining member of his subspecies, was found dead by his long-term keeper. The park said it was “unhappily surprised” to discover his charge “stretched out in the direction of his watering hole with no signs of life,” on Sunday. A post-mortem examination will ascertain the cause of death; as old as he was by human standards, Lonesome George was not old for a giant tortoise. The animals can live to around 200 years of age or even longer. Lonesome George became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands and evolution in general after he was found on Pinta Island by Joseph Vagvolgyi in 1971. George’s plight as the only known member of his subspecies (hence his nickname) led to a series of ill-fated attempts to provide him with a mate. But despite the efforts of conservationists – and two female tortoises from a close subspecies at the Charles Darwin Research Station – it wasn’t to be. George remained a solitary creature until his death yesterday. His death marks the end of the purebred Pinta Island tortoise, but there is hope that they will survive in some form: at least one first-generation descendant of the subspecies has been found at the Wolf volcano on neighboring Isabela Island. Genetic testing has been carried out to try to find further hybrids residing among the population there, according to reports. The giant tortoises of the Galapagos played a key role in helping Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution after he visited the islands in the 1830s. At the time, the super-sized reptiles were common, but the introduction of wild goats, which ate the vegetation that formed their diet, and the hunting habits of passing sailors left them on the brink of extinction.

Bethenny Frankel Bares Booty on Anderson [Video]

You’ve gotta give Bethenny Frankel props for being a good sport. The reality star, entrepreneur and possible future actress appeared on Anderson this week and was challenged by the host to a push-up contest after he said he heard that was Bethenny’s frequent go-to move at parties. The two then jumped down into position… only for Frankel’s dress to ride up and for half the audience to get an unexpected few of her bare buttocks. Pretty funny stuff, and handled very well by Bethenny who stammered with excuses for a bit and then finally just asked: How did it look? Bethenny Frankel Wardrobe Malfunction

Jennifer Lopez Defends Casper Smart as a "Good Egg"

They’ve been spotted out in public, and they’ve exchanged loving Tweets , but Jennifer Lopez hasn’t said much about her much younger boyfriend, Casper Smart. Until now. In the April issue of Vogue, the American Idol judge glows over her back-up dancer of a man, telling the magazine: “He’s adorable. But you already see that. He really is [sweet]. He’s a good egg. I don’t want to talk about it too much. It’s my private thing.” But what about that age difference of 18 years? “I don’t feel older, and I don’t feel like I look it, either, so I am just acting the same way I have always acted,” she says. As for that public split from Marc Anthony ? J. Lo adds that she’s “proud” of how both sides have handled it and points to their children as the basis for their continued respect and friendship. “We’re still friends – and we’re parents. But it’s going to take time.. It’s tough. But for the most part, I feel very proud of the way we’re handling it. I really do. We are doing the best we can for the kids.”

Star Wars Concept Artist Ralph McQuarrie Dead at 82

“Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars . His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘Do it like this.'” [via WSJ ]

Get Ready For Errol Morris’s Full JFK Investigation

Remember the short documentary that Errol Morris released last year in commemoration of the 48th anniversary of JFK’s assassination? Not for nothing, but there’s plenty more where that came from — and it sounds… interesting : “I wondered why [he drove] because we offered to fly him in. So I’m interviewing him. He gets up. He walks off. He comes back. And he has a Mannlicher-Carcano, just like the one Oswald used. He wanted to demonstrate for me the enormous difficulty of firing those shots in rapid succession.” [ Smithsonian ]
