‘Cloud Atlas’ Pays Sneaky Homage To Elvis Costello

Someone involved in the making of Cloud Atlas  is a fan of Elvis Costello. In the story thread where publisher Timothy Cavendish (Jim Broadbent) and a group of like-minded seniors plot their escape from the old-folks home where they’ve been imprisoned, the woman of the group, actress Amanda Walker, introduces herself in one scene as “Veronica Costello.”  That alone might not be enough to make a case for Elvis worship, but soon after the introduction the group of conspirators make a toast to “Trust.”  If you’re a Costello fan (like me), you know that “Veronica,” from the 1989  album Spike is a song that Elvis wrote — with a little help from his friend Paul McCartney — about his grandmother, who suffered from Alzheimers Disease. (It also happens to be his highest charting single in the U.S.) Although Veronica Costello in Cloud Atlas seems pretty lucid, but the music video for “Veronica,” which I’ve posted below, was also set in a nursing home, where the white-haired woman of the title is reminiscing about her life. I can’t find any evidence of who portrayed the elder Veronica in the Costello video, but I spoke to a representative from the London-based talent agency that represents Walker, Michelle Braidman Associates, and she assured me that the actress does not appear in “Veronica.”  (Although Walker does bear a slight resemblance to the other Veronica, she’s clearly younger.) As for Trust , it’s the name of Costello’s fifth album, which he released in 1981. It’s also one of his best, although it’s several shades more cynical than the righteous heart of Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis’   Cloud Atlas . Then again, aren’t cynics simply frustrated romantics? Taylor Lautner On Jacob And Renesmee’s ‘Breaking Dawn’ May-December Relationship: ‘I Was Worried About It’

You think navigating a press junket after a personal controversy goes public is potentially awkward? Try braving throngs of journalists clamoring for an answer to The Twilight Saga ‘s curious “imprinting” storyline , as Taylor Lautner did today when the franchise-ending  Breaking Dawn Part II  press tour kicked off. For the record, both parties in the reportedly reunited Robsten supercouple acquitted themselves ably and congenially in back-to-back press conferences as they discussed their four-year journey with the vampire franchise. [ Mild spoilers follow, if you haven’t read the books .] But Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson aren’t the only Twilight kids who’ve matured in the interim as the worldwide phenomenon has turned them and their cast mates into global megastars. Twenty-year-old Lautner came off with charisma even as he broached the subject of his character’s eyebrow-raising onscreen soul mate attachment to a child in Breaking Dawn . “It’s a fine line, and I was worried about it,” Lautner admitted of Jacob Black’s supernatural, (platonic — for now) love at first sight connection to the half-human, half-vampire offspring of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. (By comparison, Edward’s a century older than Bella, so in the grand scheme of things it’s not that bad…) Played by 9-year-old Mackenzie Foy, Renesmee grows from infant to school-age girl in a superhuman span of time — and as in the books, Jacob is compelled by his Quileute legacy to instantly “imprint,” or attach, himself to her side in a manner that eventually will take on romantic undertones. Understandably he had concerns, so he went to the source for advice: Stephenie Meyer. “There was nobody better to ask about it than her,” Lautner said. “And she basically told me, ‘Stop overcomplicating it. Think here and now, that’s all you really have to focus on.’” “It’s simple — she said it’s a lifelong bond between two people and that’s it,” he continued. “At this point the girl’s like, what, ten years old? So it’s more of a protective thing, like a brother-sister. That’s really all it is. I couldn’t allow myself to think ahead and go beyond that, so that’s kind of the zone I had to stay in.” The weirdness of the Jacob-Renesmee bond is not lost on Jacob in the film, who encounters a furious Bella when she awakens from human death to find her best friend has imprinted on her newborn baby. But Lautner’s Jacob finds himself in a more than few awkward situations in Breaking Dawn . Another scene found Lautner stripping down in front of Billy Burke’s Charlie in one of the surprisingly comical moments sprinkled throughout the film. “It actually was pretty funny in person,” Lautner laughed. “I love Billy Burke to death and he’s one of the coolest people alive, so it was a little uncomfortable for me — it’s always uncomfortable when I have to take my shirt off or something because I’m always the only one doing it!” “The weather conditions we film in, and everybody’s bundled up in like seven layers and I’m the only one in jean shorts… that was a new one,” he said. “I think the pants came off in that one too. But it was a funny, funny scene. I was so nervous to film it because it was written so hilariously and I wanted it to come across that way and I hope it does, but it was a blast to shoot.” Stay tuned for more on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt. II , which hits theaters November 16. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

For The Children: Mindless Behavior And Jacob Lattimore Make The Girls Go Cray Cray

Looking to score cool points with your tween? We figured we’d help you by letting you know that Mindless Behavior is currently touring the US on their #1 Girl Tour. Mindless Behavior came to Atlanta last weekend and we sent one of our Bossip interns to go enjoy the show. Don’t be alarmed by the screaming little girls in rainbow-colored tutus, or the audiences familiarity with somewhat adult music (“Wet The Bed” and “Birthday Cake”) played in between act or the potential for fighting moms in the audience. We promise you’ll be thoroughly entertained — or at least the kids will anyway. Our intern came back with tales of rapping 9-year-olds and a big thumbs up for Jacob Lattimore and MB’s high energy performances that were more than enough entertainment for the night. There are still a few remaining dates if you’d like to treat the kids before school starts back: Friday Aug 10 7:00 PM Mindless Behavior with Jacob Latimore UNO Lakefront Arena – New Orleans, LA Saturday Aug 11 7:00 PM Mindless Behavior with Jacob Latimore Reliant Arena – Houston, TX Sunday Aug 12 6:00 PM Mindless Behavior with Jacob Latimore Verizon Theatre at Grand Prairie – Grand Prairie, TX Thursday Aug 16 7:00 PM Mindless Behavior Orleans Arena – Las Vegas, NV Friday Aug 17 8:00 PM Mindless Behavior with Jacob Latimore Nokia Theatre LA Live – Los Angeles, CA Saturday Aug 18 7:00 PM Mindless Behavior with Jacob Latimore Paramount Theatre – Oakland, CA

Taylor Lautner Fights For His Right To ‘Twilight’ In His #1 MTV Moment

Lautner will debut the ‘Abduction’ trailer and chat with MTV News tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET! By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Lautner Photo: MTV News After finding phenomenal success as Jacob Black in the first “Twilight” movie, Taylor Lautner’s role as the lovable werewolf was in jeopardy by the time talk of “New Moon” began to ramp up in December 2008. There seemed to be a chance that the then-scrawny Lautner might not return to the flick. Before tonight’s “MTV First: Taylor Lautner” debut at 7:56 p.m. ET on air and online, we’ve been counting down Lautner’s finest MTV moments — and at #1, we see him fighting to keep his role as Jacob Black. “I have been working out. I’ve been working out since the day we finished filming ‘Twilight.’ I just weighed myself today; I’ve put on 19 pounds,” he told MTV News of how he was working to ensure he’d be Jacob from movie one right through the very last flick. The actor admitted that he was working hard and fast to make sure he could be the Jacob that author Stephanie Meyer had always envisioned. “I’m guaranteeing [director Chris] Weitz 10 more [pounds] by filming. I get to meet Chris on Friday, in two days, so I’m excited,” he said. “I’m going to have lunch with him.” Well, whatever Lautner did and worked. It’s now April 2011, and with production basically wrapped on the very last film in the franchise, it’s clear the actor and the fans couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the role. “My job for ‘Twilight’ was to bring ‘Twilight’ Jacob to life — the friendly, happy-go-lucky little Jacob,” Lautner explained back then of his arc. “And my job for ‘New Moon’ is completely different; I’ve been looking forward to that. I’ve been getting ready for it, and I can assure them that I will follow through with that job.” Don’t miss “MTV First: Taylor Lautner” tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. Survey Reveals New Parents Watch Way Too Much Television

Being friends with many people who are in the baby-having stage of life, I know that coming up with an original name that isn’t too original — but that also isn’t criminally overused — is a lot more difficult than it looks. So, in some ways, I feel for the new parents who decide that it’s just easier to write the name of one of their favorite television personalities on a birth certificate, instead of something “new.” That said: You had the gall to name your kid Finn ? And Bristol ? Oh, God, hang on while I vomit all over the keyboard.

‘Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ DVD — Watch An Exclusive Clip Here!

We have a preview of the ‘tent scene,’ including hilarious commentary by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. By Kara Warner Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Entertainment All right Twilighters, have we got a Thanksgiving treat for you! While “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” DVD doesn’t come out until December 4, MTV News is delighted to present an exclusive clip from the highly anticipated release — complete with commentary from Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart! This isn’t just any clip either. Summit has kindly bestowed upon us a juicy little snippet from the fan favorite “tent scene.” In this clip, fans get to see the heated exchange between Edward (Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) as they discuss how Jacob will have to get into a sleeping bag with Bella (Stewart) in order to keep her warm and save her from freezing to death. Edward, of course, is not at all pleased with Jacob getting anywhere near Bella, but he must concede for Bella’s sake. Jacob, taking advantage of the situation, revels in the fact that his warmer-than-normal body temperature means he can do for Bella what Edward can’t. The scene itself offers plenty of entertainment, but it’s Pattinson and Stewart’s hilarious voiceover commentary about the scene that really sells it. “Slurp your coffee a little bit more,” we hear Stewart say to Pattinson. “That’s what the fans want.” “It’s not coffee,” Pattinson responds. “It’s an Arnold Palmer,” he says, attempting to pronounce it with an American accent. “You’re drinking an Arnold Palmer?” Stewart asks, sounding amused. “Having a little lemonade and iced tea?” Meanwhile, Jacob has just crawled into Bella’s sleeping bag, which draws Stewart and Pattinson back to the clip. “God, he’s so gross, so brazen!” Pattinson says of Lautner’s werewolf. “I really don’t like Jacob.” “Aww,” Stewart says. “Look at him and his tattoo and stuff. Ugh,” Pattinson mock scoffs. “He’s just young and overzealous,” Stewart says defending the young wolf. “He’s not!” Pattinson insists. “He does it on purpose. He’s looking at me when he’s saying this stuff.” “Yeah, that is weird,” Stewart agrees. “What is wrong with him? He’s like, ‘I don’t even care about her, I just want to,’ ” Pattinson trails off. “Look at him cradling!” Stewart points out, which provokes a burst of laughter from Pattinson. “His little head nooked in there,” she adds. “You look like you’re milking him,” Pattinson says as both “Twilight” actors break out laughing. A terrific tease, and if that little sneak peek doesn’t make you want to pre-order that DVD now, we don’t know what will. What do you think about the clip? Stewart and Pattinson’s commentary? Tell us in the comments! Check out everything we’ve got on “Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
