Tarana Burke, Kamala Harris: Black Women Take A Stand At Kavanaugh Hearing

Read the rest here:

T hursday’s Senate confirmation hearing involving Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court nominee  Brett Kavanaugh provided the latest opportunity for Black women to stand up against sexual assault. RELATED: What You Need To Know About Ford And Kavanaugh’s Senate Testimonies Dozens of Black women demonstrated against Kavanaugh  — the object of Trump’s undying devotion — outside of the Senate building where both Ford and the nominee offered testimonies. Black women also went in on Kavanaugh inside the Senate building. Tarana Burke , the MeToo movement founder, was front and center during Ford’s testimony. These men are wholly uninterested and unmoved by this woman’s words…Dr. Ford has to talk about the worst trauma of her life in front of them. This is the reality of being survivor of sexual assault in this country. #WeBelieveDrFord #WeBelieveSurvivors #metooMVMT pic.twitter.com/WtLLG06okI — Tarana (@TaranaBurke) September 27, 2018 “These men are wholly uninterested and unmoved by this woman’s words…Dr. Ford has to talk about the worst trauma of her life in front of them. This is the reality of being survivor of sexual assault in this country,” Burke tweeted from the Senate hearing. Listening to this women’s voice shake as she pushes through this moment…my heart. #WeBelieveDrFord #WeBelieveSurvivors #metooMVMT — Tarana (@TaranaBurke) September 27, 2018 “This is not a trial for Dr. Ford. It’s a job interview for Judge Kavanaugh. Is this the best we can do…” Yes, @SenFeinstein — Tarana (@TaranaBurke) September 27, 2018 Of course, California Sen.  Kamala Harris , who has also been outspoken in opposing Kavanaugh, had some strong statements to deliver during the hearing. She affirmed and defended Ford, who was relentlessly questioned about her story of sexual assault against Kavanaugh. “You are not on trial,” Harris said, knowing that Republican senators were skeptical about the college professor’s character, not just her account. “You are sitting here before members of the United States Senate Judiciary Committee because you had the courage to come forward [and], as you have said, you believe it was your civic duty.” Another Black woman also had a moment during the Ford-Kavanaugh hearing: Anita Hill . Senator Dianne Feinstein , the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, referenced Hill during her opening statement. She recalled a 1991 trip to the airport in which saw a crowd watching Hill’s sexual assault testimony about then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas . She used Hill to make a powerful point. “How women are treated in the United States, with this kind of concern, is really wanting a lot of reform,” Feinstein said. Black women clearly communicated their viewpoints on Kavanaugh, and they showed no sign of backing down. Beyonce, Jay-Z Mark Fifth Anniversary in Cuba

Beyonce and Jay-Z are in Havana, celebrating their fifth year of marriage. And causing quite a stir, as Beyonce and Jay-Z do, anniversary or not! The superstars were mobbed by dozens of fans at La Guarida, a popular restaurant, on Wednesday. Police had to be called to keep the crowds at bay. Waitress Silvia Fernandez said they dined with their moms and another man she couldn’t identify. She called Beyonce “beautiful, without a drop of makeup.” It’s true, Beyonce without makeup is a beautiful thing. So are Beyonce bikini photos , for obvious reasons. Anyway … where were we? Ah yes, Cuba. On Thursday, they toured colonial Old Havana and popped into another restaurant that boasts a rooftop terrace with a sweeping view of the harbor. It was not clear why they traveled to Cuba … or how. But congratulations on the fifth anniversary!

Kamala Harris: "Best-Looking" Attorney General in U.S., President Obama Says!

President Barack Obama raised eyebrows in the political world today, praising California’s Kamala Harris as America’s “best-looking” attorney general. Speaking at a Bay Area fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee, the president said that Harris, 48, is “brilliant,” “dedicated” and “tough.” “She also happens to be, by far the best-looking attorney general.” According to reports from the fundraiser, the crowd laughed (either due to discomfort, amusement or both) after which Obama said, “It’s true! C’mon.” Some cringed at Obama’s remarks, given the historic hurdles women have faced to be recognized for accomplishments rather than physical appearances. Jonathan Chait of N.Y. Magazine called Obama “disgraceful.” “Women have a hard time being judged purely on their merits,” he wrote. “Discussing their appearance in the context of evaluating job performance makes it worse.” The Washington Post ‘s Jonathan Capehart countered that Obama and Harris are “longtime friends and allies” and he wasn’t “cat-calling a woman he doesn’t know.” “If I thought for one moment that’s what was going on, you better believe I’d hammer him for it. But that’s not the case here. Far from it. Lighten up, people.” Regardless … we’d love to hear what Michelle Obama says later. Obama calling Kamala Harris good-looking …   Harmless! He’s just being nice! Disgraceful and sexist! View Poll »

Gay Marriages Are A No-Go In California, Despite The Efforts Of The State’s First Black Woman Attorney General

A federal appeals court on Wednesday refused to allow gay marriages to take place in California while it considers the constitutionality of the state’s voter-approved ban. California Attorney General Kamala Harris had joined gay marriage proponents in urging the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to lift a stay that had been placed on a lower court’s ruling to strike down Proposition 8. Lawyers for two same-sex couples had sought again to lift the stay after the California Supreme Court recently said it would take at least until the end of the year to consider a legal question asked by the appeals court in the case. Lawyers for two same-sex couples had sought again to lift the stay after the California Supreme Court recently said it would take at least until the end of the year to consider a legal question asked by the appeals court in the case. They argued that the U.S. District Court ruling overturning the ban should be honored while the appeal, which they believe is unlikely to succeed, slowly make its way through the courts. “We felt then, as we do now, that it is decidedly unjust and unreasonable to expect California’s gay and lesbian couples to put their lives on hold and suffer daily discrimination … while their U.S. District Court victory comes to its final conclusion,” said Chad Griffin, board president of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, in a statement. In a letter to the court earlier this month, Harris said sponsors of Proposition 8 were unlikely to prevail in their appeal. Keeping it in effect, therefore, was a fruitless violation of gay Californians’ civil rights, Harris said. “The public interest weighs heavily against the government sanctioning such discrimination by permitting it to continue,” she wrote. Once the state’s high court makes its decision, the case will resume in the 9th Circuit. Once a decision is rendered there, the case is expected to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Discuss..
