The Hobbit 48 FPS Preview Divides Audiences at CinemaCon

Unveiling 10 minutes of Hobbit footage in 3-D at the revolutionary frame rate of 48 frames per second (vs. the standard 24 fps), as Warner Bros. did Tuesday at CinemaCon, should have been the first big buzz moment for Peter Jackson ‘s return to Middle Earth. The immediate reaction to the presentation, however, was anything but good news for the studio or for proponents of the kind of cutting-edge high frame rate cinema technology Jackson and folks like James Cameron and Douglas Trumbull have been championing as the future of film. Instead, it left members of the blogger corps. calling it ” jarring ,” ” non-cinematic ,” and ” like a made for television BBC movie ,” predicting that audiences will be split in embracing the brave new advance. The footage, preceded by a taped introduction by Jackson, drew breathless raves for portions of aerial footage whisking, in the style of an IMAX nature doc, over wide landscape shots that seemed to prompt unanimous praise. Then came the character footage, which told another story: At its increased frame rate, Jackson’s 48-fps scenes were reportedly almost too realistic, approximating what many compared to an HD TV or television soap-like quality. Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci described the effect thusly : …Here’s what The Hobbit looked like to me: a hi-def version of the 1970s I, Claudius . It is drenched in a TV-like – specifically 70s era BBC – video look. People on Twitter have asked if it has that soap opera look you get from badly calibrated TVs at Best Buy, and the answer is an emphatic YES. Slashfilm’s Peter Sciretta concurred : The movement of the actors looked… strange. Almost as if the performances had been partly sped up. But the dialogue matched the movement of the lips, so it wasn’t an effect of speed-ramping… It didn’t look cinematic. Variety’s Josh Dickey was a bit more reserved in his reaction: 48 fps has an immediacy that is almost jarring. And lighting it just right will be a learning process, as 3D was and still is…48 fps also, unfortunately, looks a bit like television. But it does bring 3D to a different level. And The L.A. Times’ Amy Kaufman called the feel of 48fps “hyper-realistic,” quoting one anonymous projectionist in attendance (“It was too accurate — too clear”) as well as an unnamed film buyer who wasn’t quite ready to discount The Hobbit ‘s playability: “The question is if people want to watch movies that really look real or not. I was expecting a subtle difference, but this was dramatic,” he said. “Might that work against a narrative? I don’t know. But I’m not going to judge it based on 10 minutes.” Stay tuned for more from the Hobbit camp as Warner Bros. and Jackson regroup from the CinemaCon blow, and in the meantime sound off below: Does 48 fps still seem like the future of cinema?

Josh Krajcik: So Happy for Melanie Amaro!

There may be one thing Josh Krajcik does better than sing: accept defeat. The X Factor runner-up may have lost to Melanie Amaro last Thursday night , but you’d hardly know it based on the way Krajcik greeted reporters after the show. He was giddy and gracious. “It’s been an amazing process to be a part of, I’ve met so many incredible people,” Josh said. “I feel like the future’s bright and everything I’ve done in my life has led to tonight. It’s a turning point in my life and now it starts. Now I’m ready to get to work.” As for Amaro? “She deserves to win. She’s wonderful. America decided, and she’s got such an amazing voice and she’s such a great girl. I couldn’t be happier for her.” Krajcik added that he’s gonna go home for a week and then “go to work” on his singing career. We have a feeling his days of slinging burritos are long behind him.

Nas Revisits A ‘Great Era’ On New Single ‘Nasty’

Rapper also hints at possible title change for his Life Is Good album. By Rob Markman Photo: Getty Images Throughout his career, Nas has paid homage to 1980s hip-hop pioneers like Rakim and MC Shan, and on his new single “Nasty,” the Queensbridge lyricist once again revisits his wonder years. “It’s like Tom Ford, the designer, who is one of my favorite designers. I read somewhere he’s inspired by the ’60s and ’70s and that’s why his line looks like the future now. Because he came from a great time in fashion and he turned it into his interpretation and it gives you the future,” said Nas, who chose to paint a picture of his own heyday and rap about the late ’80s and early ’90s on his new single. On the Salaam Remi-produced track, which leaked to the Internet on Monday, Nas tosses nods to the New York City of yesteryear by referencing Queens street legend Thomas “Tony Montana” Mickens, the now-closed Tunnel nightclub and the late Notorious B.I.G. “I came up in a great era, so I’m always gonna live with that and that’s always gonna live inside of me,” Nas told MTV News. “It’s relevant today more than it’s ever been. A lot of people may lose their footing in the music game and stuff, but you know, it’s always important to remember who you are and how you got here.” On “Nasty,” Nas is delivering lyrical raps in rapid succession with a ferocity that harks back to his early days when he appeared on Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque” in 1992. According to him, that hunger has existed throughout his career, even if he didn’t always put it on record. “Nah, I just tucked it. I tucked it because I wanted to do other things, experiment with other sh– and didn’t want to do the same sh– over and over,” Nas said before expounding about his return to his roots. “Hip-hop got so big that it’s important to open it back up, that real sh–. No dis to what nobody else is doing, but it’s important to open this real sh– back up.” Nas is busy prepping his 10th studio album, Life Is Good , but warns fans not to get too attached to the album’s title because it may change. “A lot of people around me didn’t understand where I was coming from. They kinda thought I was saying, “Let’s pop bottles, we’re rich, everything’s good.” That’s not where I was coming from,” he said. “So there’s another title that came, that kind of fits a little better, and you might hear about that. There might be a change coming real soon.” Related Artists Nas

Don’t Tell Me – It’s Just More of the Same

Bryan Safi is a writer for infoMania and the host of “That's Gay.” Remember how Mean Old Man McCain threatened to block movement to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” and we were all like, “um…you’re stupid”? And then remember how last night we waited to see if Sarah Palin would show up on DWTS to cheer on her little star who’s famous for not using a condom? One of those two things didn’t happen.
