DVD: Why Paper Man Might Be the Ultimate Insufferable Indie

The 2011 Sundance Film Festival kicks off today, and this prestigious annual event has yielded dozens of essential indies over the years, from sex, lies and videotape to Poison to The Kids Are All Right . But let’s not forget that the last few decades have included countless twee, precious, and generally irritating indies for every great one. Which brings us to Paper Man (out on DVD this week from MPI Home Video).

Armond White Responds to Lisa Schwarzbaum’s NYFCC Complaints by Calling Her Racist

(Deep long sigh) I know, I know: This is exactly what Armond White wants. When someone writes a column as inflammatory as the one he wrote this week, it’s done for one purpose: To get attention. And, yes, we are playing into the game by giving him the attention that he wants. It’s just, wow . It’s hard to ignore this one: White — who you may have heard is a bit of a contrarian — unleashed a 1,700-word rant in which he accused Entertainment Weekly ‘s Lisa Schwarzbaum — and the Village Voice ‘s Jim Hoberman, with whom White has had a longstanding feud — of racism.

Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. announced today that Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway will take the role of “Selina Kyle” in The Dark Knight Rises . So, Catwoman? Nolan doesn’t say specifically in the press release: “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” The director does confirm one villain, though: Tom Hardy will be playing the villainous Bane, and not The Riddler or Dr. Hugo Strange or any other obscure Batman foe. 8 Milestones in the Evolution of Natalie Portman

In this weekend’s surprisingly not-near-as-bad-as-it-could-have-been release, No Strings Attached , Natalie Portman plays a doctor who’s too busy for a proper relationship, and instead creates a pact with Ashton Kutcher that develops into a “sex-only” one. How did Portman transform herself from child star to the odds-on favorite to take home Oscar gold (note: not for No Strings Attached ) next month? You can always trace a direct line through a handful of important roles to illustrate what led to an actor’s current success, and with Portman, that line has been on a steady uphill climb sine her debut in Léon . So let’s look at eight performances — including something called “World Patrol Kids” — that trace the evolution of one Natalie Hershlag.

J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets: The Weinstein Brothers Have Their Priorities Straight

Tensions were running high at Movieline HQ in the lead up to our Golden Globes liveblog on Sunday night , because there stood a chance that the NFL playoff game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots might run past 8 p.m. on the East Coast. Naturally, we planned to flip over the Globes (or at least that’s what we told everyone), but it appears Harvey and Bob Weinstein had a different idea.

George Lucas Believes in 2012, For Real, Says Concerned Citizen Seth Rogen

If you’re a celebrity who owns a fantastical ranch full of spaceship paraphernalia, chances are you have a passing relationship with reality, anyway. Unfortunately, it turns out George Lucas and reality are barely even acquaintances, as Seth Rogen just revealed that Mr. Lucas allegedly holds a sincere belief in Mayan apocalypse lore . Funnier yet: Steven Spielberg is pretty annoyed about it.

Last Summer’s Mortal Kombat Viral Spec to Become 2011 Web Series

Sadly, the world will have to wait a while longer to see the big-screen return of Mortal Kombat , the totally ’90s martial arts fantasy video game — film franchise that had us all screaming “Finish him!” and dancing to that horrifically infectious, Immortals-penned techno theme (“Mooooortal Kombat!”) in our misspent youths. But something good did come of that impressive proof of concept short that made the rounds last summer: Warner Bros. ordered a 10-episode Web series based on Kevin Tancharoen’s slick short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth .
