Damon Lindelof Not Returning To Confuse Audiences On ‘Prometheus 2’

Damon Lindelof may be leaving Ridley Scott’s Alien universe on a vague, quasi-philosophical note that leaves no one feeling fully satisfied, indicating this week that he won’t be penning the sequel to Prometheus . Speaking to Collider , Lindelof talked first about the possible direction the Prometheus franchise-within-a-franchise could take, and then explained why he won’t be returning for round two. While he doesn’t quite come out and say it plain, he does admit circumspectly that the popular response to his script may have had a small influence on his decision. “I think what ended up happening,” Lindelof said, “was that the movie came out, and there was a reaction to the movie.” There’s far more to it than that, of course. Lindelof is, despite the haters, very busy. “…I got really wrapped up in [ Star Trek Into Darkness ] and really wrapped up in this movie that I’m producing and writing with Brad Bird,” he said, referring to the Disney film currently code-named 1952 . Lindelof also cited an upcoming TV project he’s passionate about, all of which led him to conclude he wouldn’t be able to make the kind of commitment a project like Prometheus 2 would require. Fortunately, according to his telling of events, Scott was fine with it. “I said to him, ‘I really don’t think I could start working on this movie until I do this other stuff. And I don’t know when the other stuff is going to be done.’ And he was like, ‘Well, okay, it’s not like I asked you anyways.'” But do we even need a sequel? To my mind, a continuation of Prometheus would just be an exercise in throwing good money after horrendously convoluted money. But what about you, readers? Jon Spaihts’ Original ‘Prometheus’ Script: Better Than The Film?

What if Prometheus had actually answered questions and had been more of a direct sequel to Ridley Scott ‘s Alien films, instead of a maddeningly ambiguous but thought-provoking spin-off vaguely connected to the Alien universe? Screenwriter Jon Spaihts’ original Prometheus script, confirmed to be legit by Spaihts himself, has surfaced online revealing what his facehugger-laden version might have looked like. (Spoilers follow.) As Spaihts teased to Empire last month, his Prometheus (titled Alien: Engineers ) featured facehuggers and chestbursters, among other more obvious links to the Alien films. (One word to get your geek pulse racing: Ultramorphs .) Spaihts’ Prometheus script has found its way online at Scribd.com , and while it ultimately became a different movie, the core story is mostly the same. For starters, the ship? It’s called The Magellan . And while the key players are present and reasonably similar in Spaihts’ version (scientist-lovers Watts and Holloway, Peter Weyland as a “Warren Buffet type,” David the creepy android, Meredith Vickers as a 45-year-old woman and not an earthbound goddess who looks like Charlize Theron) certain reveals and plot threads are very different from what subsequent writer Damon Lindelof became involved. One major scene that went through a transformation is Holloway’s fate, which I’ll detail here since Spaihts himself spilled the beans to Empire. Rather than being poisoned with black goo by David, Holloway meets his end when, after being facehugged in the pyramid, a chestburster rips him open… mid-coitus. It’s a fascinating read alone just to see which of Spaihts’ ideas stuck and which Scott and Damon Lindelof took in different directions, and it’s always tempting to label what could have been as better than what actually made it to the screen. But some of the changes made between this version to the theatrical cut are smart ones; here, for instance, David is more of a pronounced villain saddled with even more expository dialogue — and what fun would it have been to really know what he said to the Engineer ? Scott’s Prometheus may leave us with too many unanswered questions, but I’d venture to say this early script perhaps explained too much. It’s still viewable here and below for the time being; chime in and tell us if you’d have rather seen this version make it to the big screen instead. R.I.P.: Oscar-Nominated Nora Ephron Dead at 71

A flurry of online reports today revealed that filmmaker Nora Ephron was battling illness in a New York hospital and not expected to survive the night. The Washington Post now reports that Ephron has died six years after being diagnosed with the blood disorder myelodysplasia. Ephron was nominated for an Oscar three times for writing Silkwood , When Harry Met Sally… , and Sleepless in Seattle . As a director she helmed eight features, including popular romantic comedies Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail . Ephron had also earned acclaim as a journalist, essayist, and blogger, and most recently directed the foodie biographical drama Julie & Julia . Remember Ephron with a spirited clip from the 2007 documentary Dreams on Spec , in which she vividly compares screenwriting and filmmaking to making a pizza. [ Washington Post ]

Prometheus and The Hunger Games Stars Set for Indie Son of the South Rafe Spall ( Prometheus ) and Jacqueline Emerson ( The Hunger Games ) will star in the new indie drama by Barry Alexander Brown with Spike Lee on board to executive produce. Based on Bob Zellner’s autobiography chronicling the author’s life in Alabama where he grew up as a son of a minister and a grandson of a KKK member before joining the Civil Rights movement, Variety reports .

Receipts Across the Pond: Prometheus Continues to Top While Newcomers Fizzle

Moviegoers in the U.K. continued to send Prometheus , Men in Black 3 , and Snow White and the Huntsman into the top three spots of the box office, while ’80s hair metal pic Rock of Ages , which landed at number four though its numbers actually suggested a softer opening than its U.S. equivalent , according to figures from The Guardian. Red Lights , which will not open in the U.S. until mid-July and starring Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy and Robert De Niro, performed “landed limply.” With the U.S. number one release Madagascar 3 not in the mix yet in the U.K., Prometheus held supreme in the British box office, grossing £2,009,955 ($3,163,614) from 522 sites. That’s a PSA that’s roughly on par with its U.S. counterpart, though it’s been in theaters an extra week. Men in Black 3 took in £1,544M ($2.429M) from 495 sites. Snow White and the Huntsman stayed at number three, taking in £1,297M ($2.041M) at 496 locations, while Rock of Ages managed just over £1M ($1.57M) at 479 sites. Converted to dollars, its Per Screen calculates to about $3,278 compared to its opening $4,340 Stateside. Rock of Ages placed fourth on the U.K. box office. Red Lights landed sixth behind Sundance 2012 title The Pact , which will open in the U.S. on July 6th (it took in £475,936 -$749,433 – from 317 sites and has totaled just under £2 million since bowing June 8th there). Red Lights grossed £445,109 ($701,031) for a PSA around $2,434. Marvel Avengers Assemble (as it is called over there) placed 7th with £376,991 ($593,592) from 276 sites. Prometheus Continues UK Reign at the Box Office

Prometheus held the box office throne in the United Kingdom last weekend. Madagascar 3 won’t have its British theatrical roll out until the fall of all things, so Prometheus had no big newcomers to contend with in the United Kingdom last weekend. The Ridley Scott directed feature took in £3.14M ($4.87M) in its second weekend, a 50 per cent drop. Still, its ten day total is £15.47M ($23.99M), just behind the complete cumulative for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood which totaled £15.65M, according to figures by The Guardian. Men in Black 3 has had a bit of a rough go in the States, but it’s holding steady among the Brits, dropping a mild 16% in its third weekend, grossing £2.53M ($3.92M). Snow White and the Huntsman , meanwhile dropped only 15%, adding £5.96m ($8.68M) over the past seven days

Snow White and the Huntsman Sequel, Possible Madagascar 3 Triumph at Weekend Box Office: Biz Break

Also happening Friday morning in news, Warner Bros. is going for a new action-adventure project using Chinese mythology and Hugh Jackman takes a short leave at Les Miserables for Tony. RIP J. Michael Riva and Pinochet doc sparks protests in Chile. Snow White and the Huntsman Sequel Gets Going Universal is in talks with director Rupert Sanders about a return after directing the first version. The actors in the film apparently have options for two sequels, so more Snow White is apparently in the on the way, Deadline reports . Warner Bros. Picks Up Temple of Heaven The studio picked up the action adventure project thought up by former Disney execs Jason Reed and Michael Andreen. The story apparently combines bits of Chinese mythology to create an action adventure story, Deadline reports . Madagascar 3 a Possible Prometheus Upset this Weekend? Madagascar 3 from Paramount-Dreamworks opens today at 4,258 locations and is poised to fetch as much as $65M through Sunday. Fox’s Ridley Scott Sci-Fi Prometheus , however has some tracking services giving the feature an opening of $40M – $45M though the film will bow at a comparative 3,394 theaters, Variety reports . Hugh Jackman to Take off from Les Miserables for Tonys Appearance Jackman is heading off the London set of the theater to big screen project to receive an award for his “contributions to the Broadway community at the Tony Awards this Sunday, THR reports . Django , Spider-Man Production Designer Passes at 63 J. Michael Riva was nominated for an Oscar in 1985 for The Color Purple and won an Emmy in 2007 for The 79th Annual Academy Awards . He apparently passed away in a hospital, but no cause of death was immediately given. Django Unchained had been shooting in New Orleans, Variety reports . Pro-Pinochet Documentary Spawns Protests in Chile Titled simply Pinochet , the film will be screened in the South American country’s capital Santiago on Sunday. The divisive leader who ruled Chile for 17 years is a hero to the country’s right-wing who credit him from saving the country from communism, while opponents say he’s responsible for kidnappings and murder, BBC reports .

Prometheus Holds Second Place in Summer U.K. Box Office

The Ridley Scott-directed Sci-Fi thriller awaits its U.S. bow this weekend and momentum appears to be on its side. Across the Atlantic where audiences have already flocked to see the movie, Twentieth Century Fox is already cashing in, with a £6.24M gross last weekend, which translates to just over $9.7M. That figure outshines any of the Alien movies, according to The Guardian which reported the figures. Of course anyone with a television in the English-speaking world and beyond knew last weekend was Britain’s Diamond Jubilee extravaganza and the government tacked on two bank holidays Monday and Tuesday so crowds could join in on the festivities. And while they did, some clearly took a break for some big screen good times because Prometheus tacked on an additional £3.68M ($5.73M) those days, making the pic bigger than the total gross across the pond than any of the Alien movies, according to The Guardian. The longer term impact is challenging to determine since prequels and sequels tend to muster fans to head to the theaters in bigger droves than a film first out of the gate. But for comparisons sake, Gladiator opened in May 2000 with £3.56M ($5.54M) and eventually tallied £31.2M ($48.56M), though Robin Hood opened with £5.75M ($8.95M) but it eventually totaled only £15.6M ($24.28M).

Fame Sucks, Kristen Stewart Edition

Twilight / Snow White and the Huntsman star Kristen Stewart comes off as admirably self-possessed (“I don’t care about the voracious, starving shit eaters who want to turn truth into shit”) in Vanity Fair, even when bemoaning the photograph that changed her life: “You can Google my name and one of the first things that comes up is images of me sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe with my ex-boyfriend and my dog. It was [taken] the day the movie came out. I was no one. I was a kid. I had just turned 18. In [the tabloids] the next day it was like I was a delinquent slimy idiot, whereas I’m kind of a weirdo, creative Valley Girl who smokes pot. Big deal. But that changed my daily life instantly.
