Disney, Pixar Reward John Carter Director With Finding Nemo Sequel

Director Andrew Stanton may have made one of the biggest flops in a generation, but you know what else he made? The Oscar-winning blockbuster Finding Nemo . Thus today’s big news from Mike Fleming at Deadline: “I’m told he’s now officially come aboard the Finding Nemo sequel and has a concept the studio loves. As for Disney coming through with another live-action project, I’m hearing that nothing is firm but that the studio is working on it. It looks like the studio is ready to give Stanton a mulligan on John Carter . Stanton, who has played a big role in many of Pixar’s hits going back to Toy Story , has an opportunity to put a big flop behind him.” Terrific! All’s well that ends in a $200 million write-down well. [ Deadline ]

Grant Bowler Hints at "Challenges" with Lindsay Lohan on Set of Liz & Dick: Comic Con

So far there’s been sultry photos, a car crash and a fainting episode. Looks like Lifetime’s movie on the uproarious marriages, fights, passion and boozing lives of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are similarly dramatic in re-telling their story as in life. Beyond The Trailer host Grace Randolph caught up with New Zealand-born actor Grant Bowler at Comic-Con who revealed his “obsession” with Richard Burton, how he feels about special effects, and perhaps more intriguing, his impressions on working with co-star Lindsay Lohan. On the real Liz and Richard, he quips, “They fought as hard as they loved and they loved as hard as they drank…

Michael Keaton Hasn’t Watched Any Batman But His Own

Though that could change: “I’ve seen bits and pieces of them. Honestly, I’m not just saying this … I really kind of want to see the Chris Nolan one, because he’s so crazy talented, so I’ll keep saying, ‘I gotta go see that, I gotta go see that,’ and then like everything I still want to see, fuck, I just forget. There must be a hundred movies out there. I’ll say, ‘I gotta go see that.’ And then I never get around to seeing them. Or maybe I’ll see it later on television. I’m really bad at that. But I will tell you this: Every time I see clips of his movies, they look awesome. This trailer that’s out now? Fuck, it looks unbelievable.” [ Grantland ]

The CG Hair in Pixar’s Brave Is So Fabulous It Has Its Own Proprietary Software

Critics will argue over Disney-Pixar’s 11th century Scottish princess adventure Brave , but there’s one thing we can all agree on: That redheaded Merida chick has one fantastic head of hair. And as the Wall Street Journal reports, it wasn’t easy to do the ‘do. “Merida’s hair is made up of 1,500 individually sculpted curves, distinct points in a three-dimensional space, that are programmed to bounce and interact in relation to one another via a new software system, says [Pixar simulation supervisor Claudia Chung]. Another software program was created to make the hair react more realistically to the character’s movements and surroundings.” Not bad for a girl born nine centuries before the invention of Herbal Essences. WATCH: Bane Destroys Basically Everything In Latest Dark Knight Rises Trailer

WB has delivered a final-final trailer in advance of The Dark Knight Rises ‘ July 20 debut, filled with more explosions and Bane-shots than ever before! Watch as Tom Hardy hangs by his fingertips to an airplane seat, cool as a cucumber, as chaos erupts around him. Listen as he (almost-intelligibly, even!) calls out Bruce Wayne/Batman before tossing our hero’s broken mask to the ground on his way to lunch. It’s all in a day’s work for Hardy’s Bane, who’s come to Gotham City to kick ass and chew, uh, scenery with frail Christian Bale and catty Anne Hathaway . And guess what he’s run out of? Ass! No, wait. The other way around. I kid, I kid. Bane has turned into the reason to see The Dark Knight Rises (other than the fact that it’s The Dark Knight Rises ) and it all looks so deliciously destructive, I can’t wait. The Dark Knight Rises will inspire Bat-graffiti and ignite rising fires in your geek pants on July 20.

First Image from Disney’s Maleficent: Witchy Angelina Jolie and Her Killer Cheekbones

Cower in fear (and admiration) for the villainous Angelina Jolie ! Releasing a first look at their upcoming Maleficent , Disney announced today that production is underway on the Jolie-toplined adaptation centered on Sleeping Beauty ‘s evil witch, which “reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora.” Just look at those cheekbones. Scary! The retconned fairytale (in theaters in 2014) brings the witch Maleficent front and center, with innocent young Elle Fanning playing Princess Aurora. Fanning and Jolie are joined by a solid line-up: Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, and Lesley Manville round out the cast, while Disney Renaissance legend Don Hahn is among the executive producers. Once upon a time, Tim Burton and Darren Aronofsky’s names were bandied about to helm the picture, but visual effects vet Robert Stromberg landed in the director’s chair, marking his directorial debut. Meanwhile, Maleficent ‘s script is written by Linda Woolverton ( Beauty and the Beast , The Lion King ) and they’ve got Rick Baker onboard for make-up, all of which is promising enough for me…for now. Maleficent is set for release (in 3-D) on March 14, 2014.

Adam Carolla: ‘Chicks’ Aren’t Funny

Who would’ve guessed one of the guys behind The Man Show — the highbrow bastion of sensitivity and progressive thought that ended every episode with big-bosomed women jumping on trampolines — would have such animosity towards female comedians? Adam Carolla to The New York Post this week: “They make you hire a certain number of chicks, and they’re always the least funny on the writing staff. The reason why you know more funny dudes than funny chicks is that dudes are funnier than chicks. If my daughter has a mediocre sense of humor, I’m just gonna tell her, ‘Be a staff writer for a sitcom. Because they’ll have to hire you, they can’t really fire you, and you don’t have to produce that much. It’ll be awesome.'” [ NYP ]

Live-Action Ninja Turtles In Trouble?

Paramount’s big-budget live-action, Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has run into some budgetary obstacles, reports Nikki Finke, with production delayed in order to shave down the film’s budget to the reported target of $125 million. This means the heroes on a half shell won’t hit screens until five months beyond their initial Christmas 2013 date, moving to May 2014 — if a satisfactory budget is reached, that is. Are the Turtles in trouble? Over at THR , a report puts it in more definite, less hopeful terms, citing sources who say the studio has shut down prep on the film “indefinitely”: The issue is said to be the script. Paramount has delayed several big movies from this year to 2013, including G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Brad Pitt’s World War Z , leaving it with a spotty pipeline for the current year. Now it has halted work on its planned holiday movie for 2013, temporarily laying off preproduction staff and informing those prepping the film that the work stoppage is “indefinite,” according to sources. Another source close to the production says the movie has been pushed by ten weeks. [ Deadline , THR ]
