‘When They See Us’ Actress Isis King Altered Her Own Emmy Dress & We’re Here For It!

Read the original post:

Source: Home Picture Isis King / Isis King For this year’s Emmys, “When They See Us” actress Isis King found herself in a bit of a predicament. While she knew she would be attending the after-parties , she hadn’t planned on attending the actual event, until she got a call days before the awards show. “Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD  asked me to attend the Emmys with her. I was excited, but I didn’t have anything to wear for it!” King told HelloBeautiful. So what was she do? First, she was out of town in Iowa for the 2019 LGBTQ Presidential Forum , her stylist was out of commission and her schedule was packed, so spending time shopping for a new dress and getting it fitted just wasn’t going to work. Looking at pictures of her gorgeous gown, she did something to look so good. What was her secret? Well, last week on social media, the transgender actress shared she did what she does best: Made it work. “People have asked about my #Emmys dress. My stylist couldn’t pull threw in time so I altered the gown on the left that I already had. Cut the top off, added straps, added pleats to create a stiff ruffle-esque foundation at knee, and added tulle. Most was hand work btw!” she captioned on Instagram. Adding, “Haven’t had time to be in a designing mood lately, but sometimes you have to pull out your skills. I would never usually alter something already made because I’m pretty cocky about my designing craft, but sometimes you have to work magic! You can take the girl from designing, but you can’t take designing from the girl. Can’t believe I’ve been a Fashion Designer for 20 years WOWWWW.” View this post on Instagram Ppl have asked about my #Emmys dress. You can take the girl from designing, but you can't take designing from the girl. Can't believe I've been a Fashion Designer for 20 years WOWWWW. Do you like it better before or after my alteration? A post shared by Isis King (@msisisking) on Sep 25, 2019 at 7:43pm PDT   Just amazing! We sat down with Isis, the first trans model to compete on America’s Next Top Model , to talk about how she pulled this dress together last minute, her acting debut on Ava DuVernay’s limited series When They See Us and shining at the Emmys with her trans sisters. HelloBeautiful: Girl, your dress was stunning. How did you pull this off?  Isis King: It was all last minute! I wanted to have something with sequins and pulled some fabric to make a new dress, but realized I didn’t have the time to make something from scratch. So I looked in my closet, pulled this dress out and I was like OK I can work with this. HB: Walk us through the process.  IK: [Long story short], I knew the chiffon straps had to come off, so I added a strap to give me some support. Then I looked at the bottom of the dress and started folding and pleating it to picture what it would look like. And it looked really cool, couture-like, but I had to add some comfortable fabric underneath because with all the parties afterward, it didn’t want to be itchy all night. [Laughs] So I added some tulle, sewing each layer, which I did by hand. And there we go! HB: Wow! How long did it take? IK: Well, with the strap breaking the needles a few times and me working with fabrics I hadn’t worked with before, it took me maybe four hours altogether. HB: The response to your post was huge. Did you expect that? IK: I was really shocked because I have way before Top Model, I was a designer and over the years I have posted plenty of my designs and it didn’t get the same attention. But when I posted this dress, people were loving it! And I am like, this is great, but also, I can do way more than just altering! HB: Honestly, when I saw a picture of you and Niecy Nash [who played your mother in When They See Us ], I knew she was wearing Christian Siriano. So looking at you side-by-side, I thought you were wearing him as well! IK: It’s funny because when Niecy saw me she said, “Like mother, like daughter!” View this post on Instagram I would like to thank God, my mother, and……oh wait, it isn't mines?…… SO PROUD TO LIVE IN THIS MOMENT WITH MY LITTLE BRO @jharreljerome BROOOOOOOO!!!!…SO WELL DESERVED! So happy @koreykingwise and the #exonerated5 got to be here to see this moment! Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series!!!!!!!!! @whentheyseeus #whentheyseeus A post shared by Isis King (@msisisking) on Sep 22, 2019 at 11:20pm PDT   HB: What an amazing night for “When They See Us,” especially Jharrel Jerome who played your brother. My heart almost stopped when Angela Bassett opened the envelope and then I saw the look of relief on her face, I just knew he had won. What was the atmosphere in the auditorium like when his name was called ? IK: It was electric! I stood up for both Jharrel and Billy Porter [who won Lead Actor In A Drama Series for Pose ]. The night before, I saw both of them at a party and told them to get their speeches ready. They both laughed, but here we are! It was so amazing to be there and see their wins in person. Also, to be on set with Jharrel, watching him and acting with him, especially our scenes together of him playing a teen and adult Korey Wise and me as Marci Wise , his trans sister, it was amazing to witness. He’s such a brilliant actor. HB: Well, you’re pretty good too Isis. You held your own in those scenes with Niecy and Jharrel.  IK: Why thank you! I’ve been acting for 10 years before this and this was my big first role! I have been craving a role that was more than just being the pretty trans woman. I wanted to be a real character and have an opportunity to show what I’m capable of. I was clear [when I read the script] that I am ready for this. Once I got cast and got on set, I just wanted to make Ava proud. HB: There were scenes when you played Norman, Marci before her transition. Being a trans woman was that at all triggering? IK: You know what? No. When I was in the make-up, I was OK. I even asked Ava if I could have sideburns because I have never had that before. They even added hair to my lip and I bound my chest, (which gave me so much respect for those who do bind.) I was able to walk the streets of Harlem as Norman and no one knew who I was! I was in disguise, really acting. And for the first time, I was doing something different as an actress. I t wasn’t triggering, more like exhilarating. HB: I also saw pics of you with Pose actresses Mj Rodriquez and Indya Moore . What did it mean for you to be able to share that Emmys space with them like that? IK: Amazing. It was a great night to be with them and Dominique Jackson (Elektra from Pose ), we go way back to the ballroom scene. And Janet [Mock] , we’ve been girlfriends since 2011, and Angelica Ross , who’ve I known since 2009. So to be there, hug one another and celebrate us was very special. There was something very powerful to be trans women in our really cool garb and our sunkissed skin and to know that we BELONGED there. And I look forward to more of these moments when we can hold those statues, and have more stories [with trans leads] outside of Pose. That time is coming.    View this post on Instagram Magical Sunkissed Snatched Talented Fierce Strong Courageous Bad Ass “Good Morning Charlie” vibes . Did I miss anything? @mjrodriguez7 x @indyamoore A post shared by Isis King (@msisisking) on Sep 24, 2019 at 9:50am PDT   HB: Finally, what’s next for you? IK: So much. Last month, I walked the Savage x Fenty at New York Fashion Week, which was a dream come true. Rihanna told me my walk was fine and I literally froze up. [Laughs]. I am also going to be doing some more ads for Gabrielle Union’s “I’m Perfect” New York & Company Collection too. That, and auditioning for roles, taking those meetings and working on some influencer projects. Sometimes it feels like I’m playing catch up. it’s been 11 years since Top Model and I see that now they do want to hear my voice. So the takeover continues. It’s slow, but I am planting my seeds and being positive about my journey. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Her character, Diamond, hails from The Bronx, is quick-witted and never passes up on an opportunity to tell it like it is (lol). Also, we have to mention how radiant her skin looks on screen! Sporting a chic glow, we couldn’t help but wonder how the rapper was able to achieve the look. According to Refinery29 , all the credit goes to Cardi B’s go-to stylist Erika La Pearl! She tells the publication that she relyed on the Pond’s Nourishing Moisturizing Cream ($7.49, riteaid.com ) to give Cardi a natural, yet radiant glow. “It keeps the body hydrated but not too greasy or oily,” she tells Refinery29. In an effort to give Cardi’s skin an illuminating finish, she followed up with MAC’s Iridescent Powder in Golden Bronze to make her glisten. “I applied a lot of this all over her body with a brush, so when the set lights hit, her skin would be like bam !” She continued, “Cardi was very laid-back and trusted me to create her look for  Hustlers, ” Erika says. “We had only one day to film all of her scenes, so she came in, closed her eyes, and let me get to work.” Erika has never missed a beat when it comes to creating a flawless face for the star, so it’s no surprise that the rapper brought her along for her on-screen debut. While it’s easy to think that celebrity MUA’s utilize high-priced beauty products to create beauty looks, this proves yet again that you can use drug store items to create a head-turning look! The fact that the Pond’s Nourishing Mositurizing Cream is under $8.00 makes this an affordable find we all need to add in our beauty arsenals. Cardi B Had The Perfect Response To Tekashi 6ix9ine’s Testimony About Her Being Part Of His Old Gang

See the original post:

Source: WENN/Avalon / WENN At this point  Tekashi 6ix9ine  has more features during his testimony than those that have appeared on his actual records. The rapper, who is in the midst of day three of testimony in a trial against his former manager and more had outed  Jim Jones   and  Cardi B  as alleged members of the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. A rep for Atlantic Records says that Cardi is not a member of the gang. In testimony, 6ix9ine called Jones a “retired rapper” and said that he was a member of the Nine Treys. The court also heard a wiretapped audio recording of Jones saying that Tekashi wasn’t a Blood no more. “He’s not a gang member no more,” Jones allegedly can be heard saying. “He was never a gang member. They going to have to violate shorty because shorty is on some bulls**t.” He allegedly said of Cardi that he knew her but did not mimic her meteoric rise by having members of the gang join him in music videos. “I knew who she was. I didn’t pay attention,” 6ix9ine allegedly told the court. Well, Cardi, despite a  GQ profile where she admitted she had joined the Bloods as a teenager, had the perfect response on social media in regards to all the hoopla. Say What? Black Woman Denied Pedicure For Being ‘Too Big’ For Seat

Source: Trinette Reed / Getty When Tina Lewis went to Rose Nails Salon in Houston all she wanted was to be pampered with a much-needed pedicure. Instead, she claims she was met with fatphobia and denied services because of her weight. According to KTRK , Lewis accused the salon of telling her they couldn’t help her because she was “too big” to fit in their pedicure chairs. Lewis was shocked. “She was like, ‘What did she just say?’…I said, ‘Yes, mama, she just said that to me,’” she told the KTRK. “I was like, ‘Can I get a pedicure? And what chair do I sit in?’ And (the employee) was like, the chairs were not big enough for me to sit in. And I was like, ‘Are you serious?’” Marie Bui , an employee of the salon, told the news station that it was not her intention to hurt or offend Lewis. “I said, ‘I’m sorry I cannot serve you because my spa chair is very small,’” she said, adding that a prior customer had damaged a chair because of her weight. Apparently, the salon alleges that they cannot afford to replace these chairs if they continue to get broken. Meanwhile, Lewis ain’t trying to hear that noise. “It was, like, very disrespectful. To me, I felt like it was discrimination.” Lews is also clear: She won’t be going back there again…and honestly, we don’t blame her. This isn’t the first time a woman has spoken out about this type of treatment at a nail salon. Last September, a South Carolina woman claimed that she was turned away from getting her nails done because she weighed 250 pounds, PEOPLE reported . Listen, it’s 2019 and the majority of folks are not a size 6. A recent study found that the average size of women in America is between 16-18. So it’s time for the beauty industry to get with the picture and adapt to reality. Fix It, Jesus: DeRay McKesson Reignites Feud With Shaun King: ‘I Tried To Engage Offline…’

S haun King and DeRay McKesson once worked closely together but had an epic falling out that played out on Twitter years ago. Like most social media feuds, it was hard to tell who was right or wrong, but people still took sides. Since then, they have rarely mentioned each other — until now. DeRay McKesson wrote a scathing and long piece on King. See Also: Michael Moore Begs Michelle Obama To Run For President: ‘She’s The One Person Who Could Crush Trump’ In a piece for Medium , McKesson goes on and on about how he trusted King, believed in his work but then noticed dismissiveness and bad communication. He then implies King stole money from Justice Together, where McKesson was a board member at one point, and said, “To date, it is not clear that Shaun filed the appropriate taxes for Justice Together, as there is no 990 form available for public review from the IRS website.” He also slammed Shaun King’s fundraising report, claiming it was not independent. McKesson also alleged he “did not ‘raise’ millions. He took credit for other people’s work… He takes credit for 100% of all funds raised for any fundraiser whose link he has ever posted online, in an e-mail blast, or re-tweeted .” McKesson also referenced the Clarissa Brooks incident, where King demanded an apology after she reportedly said that he stole or spent money that was raised for Cyntoia Brown , which King claimed he never raised money for. McKesson cites a bunch of failed projects from King. Basically, McKesson believes King is a fraud. King has been defending his name for weeks after Rihanna announced she will honor the Morehouse man at an upcoming awards ceremony. Social media went ham and demanded that she reconsider . In response, King released a 72-page report of “ every single penny I’ve ever raised since” Black Lives Matter began. The documents were compiled and authored in part by people like Tamika Mallory , Co-Chair of The Women’s March and Co-Founder of Justice League NYC and civil rights attorney Lee Merritt . The report focused on fundraisers that King promoted through his social media accounts and provided what King said was a full accounting of his financial relationship with Real Justice PAC and Action PAC along with five years of his tax returns. In addition, King said the authors of the fundraising report had unlimited access to his and his family’s checking accounts, savings accounts, credit cards, retirement accounts and money management software. “ I’ve helped raise over $34.5 million for families, charities, causes, & campaigns,” King tweeted Tuesday morning. “A 7 person expert review board inspected every penny – including the past 5 years of my tax returns. Their 72 page report…” Since the #BlackLivesMatter Movement began, I've helped raise over $34.5 million for families, charities, causes, & campaigns. A 7 person expert review board inspected every penny – including the past 5 years of my tax returns. Their 72 page report… https://t.co/cmxkK8AKRE — Shaun King (@shaunking) September 3, 2019 In addition, the families of Nia Wilson , Philando Castile , Terence Crutcher and multiple other people killed in recent years vouched for King. The family of Botham Jean , the man who was killed by Dallas police officer Amber Guyger a year ago this Friday, had nothing but glowing words for King. “We have had the pleasure of interacting with Shaun King in the months following Botham’s murder,” Jean’s family wrote. “Shaun has become more than another voice for our family. He has become our friend. He has advocated for the Jean family, spoke up for us, dried our tears and held our hands. We are grateful for his support as are many other families who have met him. In this photo Shaun King welcomed our family into his home to do what he does best — nourish.” Read King’s full report here. #NYFWNOIR: It Took Over 2 Suitcases Of Hair To Create The Stunning Hairstyles For The Studio 189 NYFW Show

Read the original:

Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James Backstage at the Studio One Eighty Nine show was an amalgamation of melanin magic. Rosario Dawson and her longtime friend Abrima Erwiah have created a social enterprise that supports African fashion and sustainable practices. On Tuesday afternoon, the brand showed their Spring/Summer 2020 collection and had 60 models to show all their vibrant looks using African artisanal practices. Every model had a different hairstyle and TRESemmé products were utilized to help create the looks. Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James The Lead Hairstylist for the Spring/Summer 2020 collection was Unilever Hair Expert and Celebrity Hairstylist, Ursula Stephen . Stephen explained, “Typically when you see a show, most of the girls have the same look, even if they don’t have any hair, they are forcing a look into that hair.” This was not the case for this show. She continued, “For us when I walked in and saw the designs, they looked cultural and could be African, and it would be easy to do braids and all that, twists and all that, cultural look, but we wanted to do the opposite. We felt that natural, or loving cultural, doesn’t mean you have to be natural. Natural is a within type of thing.” Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James While backstage I saw people having their locs retwisted and tied up, models getting mini afro buns, hair being blown out into straight looks. Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James Stephen explained to me while giving a model a weave, “We just decided we are going to take everybody and enhance their individual look. If you have natural, kinky coarse hair we’re gonna have fun with it! Create a fun shape. Do something different.” Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James The main hairstyle was reverse cornrows with a bang. She explained, “This is why I flipped the braids. I was like, “You know what? I want to incorporate our culture but I also want to show that we could be elevated and we can still be high fashion with our hair. Who says you can’t have a bang with natural hair? Lemme flip it, turn it around, give her a fringe in the front and a surprise in the back.” This hairstyle is great for the girl with a short to medium afro. There was SO much hair backstage. Stephen revealed that there were at least two suitcases full, “probably more.” She shared that women should keep extensions in their house to help switch up their look. “You have options and it’s inexpensive. You can get marley twists and you twist it, you pin it on top of you head. Just create shapes.” You can also just add hair to help make your hair bigger. “That’s what we did with Damarys,” Stephen explained. “She’s closing the show and she had a small afro, and I said, ‘You know what? I want your hair to be a lot more dramatic than what it is.’ We just added natural hair and made her fro extra large.” Source: Mike Coppola / Getty Black hair is so beautiful and it was illustrated during the Studio One Eighty Nine runway show as each model walked down the runway. That’s the beauty of black hair. You can actually be a different person every day if you want. You can literally straighten your hair out and have bone straight hair, if you want today. You can wet it and it go back into your natural texture, then you can do braids, you can do twists. Our hair is beautiful! That is really our magic, is our hair.
