Man’s Best Friend: Elijah Wood and Man-in-Dog-Suit Form Christmas Week’s Most Unlikely Match

If you haven’t noticed from idly clicking around the Internet today while you were supposed to be working, this week before Christmas is poised to be a slow one. Which is good because you can get your last minute holiday shopping done (cough, Gift Guide), but bad because boring! Thankfully, the teaser for Wilfred has arrived to brighten your day. That it begins with Elijah Wood penning the third (and then fourth) version of his suicide note is of no consequence.

Topher Grace Can’t Hardly Wait in the Take Me Home Tonight Trailer

Well, if nothing else, maybe Take Me Home Tonight will go down as the death rattle for the 80s nostalgia coming-of-age film. It’s set in 1988, so I suppose maybe we’ll see one in a few years set in 1989, but based on this trailer, I’d say it’s about time to move on. It’s actually bizarre how comfortable the marketing for this film seems with every single overused last-great-party-of-youth cliche known to man. That said, the film does have one secret weapon, and as with Yogi Bear trailer, it’s extremely under-utilized here.

‘They Just Made a Mistake’: Blue Valentine Director Derek Cianfrance on the MPAA

Parents around the nation breathed a sigh of relief last week when the MPAA overturned their initial NC-17 certification of Blue Valentine and replaced it with the more family-friendly R-rating. OK, maybe not. Though a great injustice was rectified, and just in time, too: The now-viable Blue Valentine has been picking up steady awards momentum from critics circles, and received two Golden Globe nominations earlier this morning for stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. Does director Derek Cianfrance blame the MPAA for putting his nearly decade-in-the-making bit of awards-bait in peril?

Watch Johnny Depp’s Future Golden Globe Nominated Performance in the Rango Trailer

Another day, another trailer featuring Johnny Depp. You know what that means: The biggest actor in the world will have two more Golden Globe nominations to add to his impressive tally next year! Never mind that he only voices the chameleon at the heart of Gore Verbinski’s Rango ; if the Golden Globes can nominate Jennifer Love Hewitt as Best Actress in a Mini-Series, they can certainly find room for another shot of Depp.

The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Trailer: Fourth Verse Same as the First?

Much like The Matrix spawned two unwatchable sequels, so too did Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ; in fact, if you can even remember one nonsensical plot point from either mega-grossing sequel — hell, if you can even remember their titles — you’re already ahead of many people watching the just released teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides . Still, that first film — that was fun! Can Pirates 4 recapture the glory?

New Battle: Los Angeles Trailer Revels in B-Movie Mayhem

Remember that first Battle: Los Angeles teaser that was a little bit more elegantm artsy and awesome than anyone expected? Its editing and image composition were so well orchestrated with the unique, dreamy space pop that it looked like it might actually transcend the cheesy, B-movie trappings of the aliens-invade-Los Angeles genre. Well, B-movie fans rejoice. This new trailer has cheese to spare.

Meet Another Almost Famous Music Critic in the Killing Bono Trailer

From Britain, here comes what looks like a feel-good underdog story about two rock bands in Dublin, based on a memoir by Telegraph critic Neil McCormick. Ben Barnes plays McCormick, the frontman for an up and coming rock n roll band who are competing for the spotlight with their friends’ band…U2. Whoa. Bummer.

Prom Trailer: Is Disney the New King of High School Cinema?

I’ve waited years for a movie to get prom right. Mean Girls came close with its ludicrous prom queen coronation sequence, but otherwise you rarely see prom depicted for what it is (at least to me ): a disillusioning display of social status, pettiness and rented decorations. Teen cinema is so often invested in “popularity” as a legitimate high school force that proms are treated like magical and climactic events as opposed to well-chaperoned letdowns. But maybe Disney is on to something with its new movie Prom , a flick that looks a bit more Degrassi than de rigeur .

The Awesome Cowboys & Aliens Trailer: Heavy on Cowboys, Low on Aliens

After the soul-crushing awfulness of the trailer for Green Lantern , it’s nice to know that at least one summer movie in 2011 won’t be a total disappointment. The trailer for Cowboys & Aliens — which will get some serious placement in front of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part I this weekend — has premiered online and it’s nowhere near as silly as the title might have you believe. In fact, it looks pretty harrowing. Well, for a movie about cowboys fighting aliens.
