That the AMPAS found room for everything from Winter’s Bone to Toy Story 3 to the ferocious performance given by Movieline favorite Jacki Weaver means they deserve a bit of kudos. Well, almost all of them. Otherwise, status quo: The Social Network , The King’s Speech , The Fighter , Black Swan , The Kids Are All Right , Inception , Toy Story 3 , 127 Hours and True Grit all received nominations from the PGA, meaning they’re one step closer to fulfilling their predicted Oscar glory. Trailer Intro for John Carpenter’s The Ward: Who’s That in the Shower?

Welcome to 2011, where we finally transition “trailer announcements” and teasers with no actual footage to “trailer intros.” In the case of this presumably leaked look at Amber Heard in John Carpenter’s The Ward , this term literally means the first half of the trailer. Coming soon: The Movieline 10-second Verdict. But yes, the first look at The Ward offers several mysteries to ponder including: “Why did Heard set her house on fire?” and “Who/what is that creepy shadow in the community shower?”

Oscar Nominated Actor Pete Postlethwaite Dies at 64

The very talented British actor Pete Postlethwaite has passed away at 64 “following a lengthy illness.” Postlethwaite was nominated for an Oscar in 1994 for his heart-wrenching performance in In the Name of the Father , in which he totally held his own against Daniel Day-Lewis. Even if he was never a marquee name, Postlethwaite did amazing work in a wide array of films including The Usual Suspects , Romeo + Juliet and this year’s The Town and Inception . After working with him in The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Amistad , Steven Spielberg described Postlethwaite as “the best actor in the world.” Click after the jump for a short montage of screen shots featuring the actor, which serves as a reminder of how many movies benefited from his talent.

Natalie Portman Is Pregnant and Engaged to Black Swan Co-Star

Forget No Strings Attached . How will this announcement affect Natalie Portman’s Academy Award campaign? The Black Swan star’s representatives have confirmed that the Best Actress frontrunner is engaged to, and expecting a child with, Swan choreographer Benjamin Millepied. My Favorite Movies of 2010

I was hesitant to make a top 10 movie list this year because, really, who cares what I have to say? But then I started thinking, Yeah… who cares what I have to say? Without the title of “movie critic,” I can just choose whatever movies I want — the ones that I truly enjoyed the most — as opposed to movies that I know are technically great or that any film fan should definitely see, but may not be as emotionally pleasing to my Big 12-school-educated mind. I know that a “favorite movie list” from an Internet writer my age is supposed to include Inception and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World , it’s almost blasphemy for it not to, but mine doesn’t.

Introducing the SNL Scorecard: The Good, Bad and Ugly of Saturday Night

Saturday Night Live ‘s 36th season commenced last night with alumna Amy Poehler as host — Poehler’s first time in that role, making her only the fourth former female cast member to handle hosting duties. A lot of changes were made in the offseason: Abby Elliott and Bobby Moynihan joined the main cast; Will Forte moved on and Jenny Slate wasn’t invited back; Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah were all added as feature players. How did the new blood fare in their first episode? Not surprisingly, they weren’t seen much (though they did get a chance to briefly wave to the camera during the opening monologue… so that’s nice). Even more importantly, was SNL any good ? Movieline busted out its fresh new SNL Scorecard (along with the patented Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll) to make sense of it all.

Shia LeBeouf enjoyed his fifth straight number one opening as Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps ruled the box office. The angry cartoon owls of Ga’Hoole fended off Ben Affleck for a number two spot but the angry cartoon ladies of You Again had to settle for an anemic fifth place opening. Your weekend receipts are here.

REVIEW: Ben Affleck Narrowly Misses Greatness with The Town

As cool and straight an entertainment shot as his brother’s recent directing debut was pyrotechnically scattered, Ben Affleck’s The Town has got bangs, bucks and the kind of showy, signature roles aspiring actors pantomime themselves asleep to at night. The movie is as slick and tightly constructed as Affleck’s debut, Gone Baby Gone, was prolix and unruly. But The Town lacks Gone ‘s operatic ambitions. And the irony is that that lack of a grand or even grandiose plan keeps this very good film from being a truly great one.
