Hayden Christensen Wants Credit For Royal Pains

Just add “jilted creator/executive producer” to Hayden Christensen’s resume. The Star Wars actor and his brother filed a lawsuit yesterday against the USA network , alleging that the second-season series Royal Pains is a ripoff of their own idea. The Christensen brothers claim that in 2005, they pitched a concierge doctor show called Housecall to the network, and a USA executive even admitted that he had never heard of the profession before their meeting. This whole situation smells (unfortunately, not like the Christsensen-endorsed Lacoste . [ NYP ]

Here’s the Movie that Beat Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald to Their ‘Historic’ User-Generated Doc

So everyone’s gotten over yesterday’s Inception hype and has apparently moved on to something smaller called Life in a Day — a collaboration between directors Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald that will comprise a bundle of user-generated clips shot and uploaded to YouTube on July 24. The finished product will premiere next January at the Sundance Film Festival. Today’s PR blitz calls Life the “first user-generated feature-length documentary film shot on a single day” and a “historic global film experiment.” Which wouldn’t be so off-base — if it were true.

REVIEW: Winnebago Man Explores Making and Breaking of a Viral Video Superstar

At 76, Jack Rebney speaks in rich, Orson Wellesian tones and has a gift for cursing that even the old master might have admired. Trained as a broadcaster but reduced, late in his career, to starring in in-house corporate videos, he’s developed a peculiar persona: That of a quintessential disappointment artist. Rebney’s extensive outtakes from a 1988 Winnebago marketing video suggest a man whose explosive reactions to the indignity of his predicament have taken on a performative zeal. Those outtakes, which became a hot commodity in the VHS underground before going viral on YouTube in 2005, inspired Winnebago Man, an earnest and occasionally poignant attempt to penetrate Rebney’s potent man-on-fire image and explore the impact of becoming an Internet sideshow.

Alan Ruck on Persons Unknown, the Death of Multicam Comedies, and Missing John Hughes

In his 30 years as a showbiz mainstay, Alan Ruck has starred in movies and TV shows that have come to exemplify their times. The John Hughes movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off , in which Ruck played hooky accomplice Cameron Frye, remains a hallmark for rambunctious ’80s teen comedies, while Spin City , where Ruck played the quipping Stuart Bondek, typifies the multicamera sitcom streak of the ’90s. Now, his new NBC miniseries Persons Unknown encapsulates the DVD -friendly serializaed appeal of television today, complete with a jigsaw mystery that can please fans of Veronica Mars , Lost , and The Twilight Zone alike. Ruck phoned Movieline last week to discuss the curious production of Persons Unknown , his disappointment with current TV, and the legacy of John Hughes.

Will Sir Ian McKellan Still Appear in The Hobbit?

Considering The Hobbit doesn’t really have a studio or a director at this point — though Brett Ratner is still available — it does seem a bit silly that there are actually actors still attached to this thing — a fact Sir Ian McKellan surely realized. Speaking with New Zealand’s Good Morning , the acclaimed thespian — who would appear as Gandolf the Grey in the Lord of the Rings two-part prequel — pretty much threw cold water onto the heads of OneRing.net message board posters throughout Middle Earth.
