Watch: ‘Total Recall’ Director’s Exclusive Trailer Commentary

Len Wiseman walks MTV News through the first look at his remake. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Kara Warner Colin Farrell in “Total Recall” Photo: Sony Pictures Earlier this week, we saw Colin Farrell realize he may not be the man he thought he was, in the first trailer for “Total Recall.” The first look at the sci-fi remake had a ton of futuristic visuals, badass women and a bleach-blond John Cho, but we wanted a deeper take on what the movie has in store. So MTV News turned to director Len Wiseman for the answers. Wiseman went into the details of the trailer and how it will reflect the finished film, scene-by-scene, and even shared some secrets from the set. The first images from the trailer surprisingly give no sign of the remake’s futuristic setting. Colin Farrell, as Doug Quaid, wakes up next to his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and slowly looks out onto his world. “We actually open up very intimately with Quaid, and then we step out and realize what world he lives in,” Wiseman said. “I wanted to set the stage first for just his relationship and then get a sense of the world and what sort of environment he is in and oppressed by.” Once the plot begins to move forward, Quaid seeks meaning from Rekall, a company than can implant memories. Here, Wiseman saw an opportunity to pay homage to the original film. “Rekall, I wanted to set up some elements that were familiar — a bit of the chair, a bit of what I was excited about when I was a teenager, things that I had kept from that experience,” he said. At the same time, Wiseman wanted to add edgier elements to the familiar setting. “[We] set it up in a much more opium-den, slightly more sketchy version of this whole process,” he said. “I wanted to have a little bit more danger. At its core, it’s screwing with your brain chemistry. That cannot be a widely accepted thing.” The flashiest scene of the trailer comes after the police storm Rekall and attempt to arrest Quaid. In a brutally kinetic single shot, the camera literally flies around the room as Quaid dismantles the police force. Wiseman said he had always wanted to do a scene like that but only just found the opportunity with “Total Recall.” “I needed to have the audience feel what Quaid was feeling. I wanted to set up a moment where you aren’t given a chance to take a breath until it’s over, just like he would.” The setup to capture that shot involved computer-operated cameras moving quickly around the set as Farrell repeatedly performed the fight choreography. “It was a very complicated shoot where Colin had to do the fight 22 times, actually, to get the thing right with all of the cameras,” Wiseman said. “The cameras would move at 35 miles an hour that were on computer systems. It took two days. It was immensely fun, but it is 100 percent practical.” Though the trailer only shows a brief look at it, the fight scene between Beckinsale and Jessica Biel is one Wiseman felt was important to include. “I wanted to give a sense of how strong these female characters are,” he said. “I want it to be the actual payoff of Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale going at it; you’re not watching two stunt players that are carrying that name. It’s actually Jessica and Kate just kicking either other’s ass.” The trailer closes with a mind-bending shot of Quaid quickly shuffling through a series of faces in place of his own. Wiseman said he included the scene as a way of communicating the central idea of the movie. “I’ve always been attracted and intrigued by anything that brings into question, ‘Who am I’? It’s such an enticing story to me,” he said. “That line right there is the basis of the movie. That line right there is the core of the movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Total Recall.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Race Matters: New Study Finds Black Women Are Happier Being Chubby Lumpkins Than White Women

Black women in America may tend to be heavier than white women but they are far happier with their bodies, a study has found : A nationwide survey found that 66 per cent of overweight or obese black women had high self esteem compared to 41 per cent of average-sized or thin white women. The survey by the Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation interviewed more than 800 women across America to compile one of the most comprehensive studies in decades. However black women remain more likely to slip into obesity and suffer higher rates of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other weight-related health problems. The survey discovered that 90 per cent of black women thought living a healthful lifestyle is very important, outranking religion, career and marriage. Having ‘meat on your bones’ and ‘something to grab on to’ has always been considered healthy and larger black women celebrated and flaunted their bodies. “Big, black and beautiful” as the motto goes. But do you feel that because being big has become widely accepted in the Black Community as opposed to other races? Has that perception of beauty translated into our health taking a backseat, whereas in the White community being considered big is normally associated with being unhealthy? Source More On Bossip! WARNING: EXPLICIT CONTENT “Im high as fuck and don’t even know to start this so ima just say thank you to everyone who’s supported the TAYLOR GANG movement and showed love up to this point. We’ve all grown so much since i first came onto the scene and most of all inspired a whole new generation of muh fuggas who aren’t afraid to be themselves and unite. Before there were Taylors, the game was lacking fun, unity, positivity, and love for one another. Shit, your favorite rappers weren’t even getting paid well. You guys changed that, and the game shld forever be in debt to you. I remember getting 500 dollars for a show to fly out and see kids who had no idea what a wiz khalifa was, and you crazy muh fuggas showed up. Had a great time, and spread the word. Its ya’lls spirit who revived the rap game and brought back the true art to this shit. Your demand for live shows made it possible for a lot of rappers to come from nothing and feed their families. Promoters too, more kids are managers, dj’s videographers. Shit everyones eating. Thanx to you Taylors!!!! Take credit for that shit. Lol Moving forward we gotta take that positivity with us. Theres tons of different crews now which is so inspiring because people are finding their own voice and unique lane. As Taylor Gang WE FUCK WIT EVERYBODY. I remember when i made kush and orange juice, I listened to it and knew I had created a new genre that wld change music. The mistake i made on Rolling Papers was thinking it was time to move on from that genre not knowing that it had impacted people so much. The album did great numbers, but creatively wasn’t my best work. No regrets though. We live and we learn. So for my fans sake and own personal enjoyment, Ive gone further into the world we’ve created and elaborated on our genre with the mixtape Taylor Allderdice and of course my sophomore album ONIFC. The white bricklayer from Virginia defied stereotypes and centuries of racist laws when he married Mildred Jeter, who was black and Native American. Convicted of violating a law against interracial marriage, the Lovings fought for their rights and won a landmark 1967 Supreme Court case that struck down such bans nationwide. Read: Black Love Their lives are explored in a new documentary, “The Loving Story,” which premieres Tuesday on HBO. Today, there are more than 4 million “mixed marriages” in the United States, and roughly one in seven new marriages are between people of different ethnicities. But in 1958, when the Lovings’ marriage was ruled illegal and they were banished from their native Virginia, 21 states outlawed interracial unions. “The Loving Story” details the couple’s nine-year battle to live in Virginia as man and wife. Using evocative photographs, newly unearthed footage and interviews with the Lovings’ daughter and lawyers, the film reveals the power of love to overcome bigotry.

Live Chat of Obama’s Address to the Nation

President Obama will address the nation on live television at 8pm tonigh. He will seek to allay concerns that the federal government’s response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has been sorely lacking. In fact, a Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted earlier this month found that Americans believe the federal government’s response to the spill has been worse than its response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It is widely accepted that Obama will strike a very combative and populist tone in response to public demands that he take a more hardline stance towards BP. The most pressing question, it seems, is whether he will use the opportunity to tout cap and trade legislsation–and in what language he will tout that advocacy if he does. Join us below the jump for discussion and debate on the President’s address. Note: all NB content policies are in effect. Excessive ad hominem attacks and the use of vulgarity of offensive language will get you banned .

IPCC Chairman: Despite Attacks from Critics, Climate Science Will Prevail

Science thrives on debate. Only by challenging scientific findings do we expose weak arguments and substantiate strong ones. But the process relies on the debate being devoid of political taint and grounded in sound scientific knowledge. Sadly, that has not been the case in the recent barrage of criticism leveled against climate science. The readers of Yale Environment 360 are by now familiar with recent questioning by some of the validity of the widely accepted science of climate change. The release of emails stolen from the University of East Anglia was used just prior to the Copenhagen Climate Summit to project an unflattering portrayal of climate scientists in general and to voice allegations that climate science was deeply flawed. (It is significant that the U.K. House of Commons Science and Technology Committee last month issued a report essentially exonerating the researchers involved of any ill intent or wrongdoing, as did an independent panel established by the university.) This episode was followed by accusations that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which I chair, had exaggerated the severity of climate change. Though some of the criticism has been thoughtful and was welcomed by the IPCC, much of it relied on unsubstantiated conspiracy theories and gross mischaracterizations that would be laughable were they not intended to create a bias in public perceptions on this critical issue. Certainly, in any human endeavor there is always room for improvement, and that is particularly true of enhancing the level of thoroughness in searching for new knowledge. In this context, the IPCC has listened and learned from the more reasoned criticism voiced recently. As I will explain later in this article, the panel is also taking action to refine its procedures in response to fair and objective criticism. But to call climate science a “hoax,” as some fringe critics have done, amounts to a tremendous disservice to science and to humanity as a whole. much more at link… added by: WakeUpPeople
