Read more:

Here are tips for parents to encourage reading for teenagers. Lately, I have had a host of parents complain to me about their  struggle with getting their  teens to read anything but Facebook. With the surge of electronic there is a new opportunity to make it relevant in their world.   As an adult, you know that reading is important and you obviously want to make sure that the teenagers in your life grow into adulthood with all the skills they need to succeed. 1-   Set an example. Let teens see you reading for pleasure. 2- Furnish your home with a variety of reading materials. Leave books, magazines, and newspapers around. Check to see what disappears for a clue to what interests your teenager. 3- Give teens an opportunity to choose their own books. When you and your teen are out together, browse in a bookstore or library. Go your separate ways and make your own selections. A bookstore gift certificate is a nice way of saying, “You choose.” 4- Build on your teen’s interests. Look for books and articles that feature their favorite sports teams, rock stars, hobbies, or television shows. Give a gift subscription to a special interest magazine. 5- View pleasure reading as a value in itself. Almost anything your youngsters read—including the Sunday comics—helps build reading skills. 6- Read some books written for teens. Young adult novels can give you valuable insights into the concerns and pressures felt by teenagers. You may find that these books provide a neutral ground on which to talk about sensitive subjects. 7- Acknowledge your teen’s mature interests. Look for ways to acknowledge the emerging adult in your teens by suggesting some adult reading you think they can handle. 8- Keep the big picture in mind. For all sorts of reasons, some teenagers go through periods without showing much interest in reading. Don’t panic! Time, and a few tips from this article, may help rekindle their interest. Adults know how important it is for their teenagers to read. Reading is not just important while teens are in school; good reading skills are essential to future success in the workplace. Oh, man. The only way the Funny or Die video “Staying Positive with Jesse Eisenberg” could be any better is if Eisenberg himself was actually the star. He’s not, of course, but comic Scott Gairdner does a fairly great impression of what the 30 Minutes or Less star would look like hosting an advice show for teen girls. “Should I like goth or hip-hop?” asks one of the youngsters hoping for some Eisenberg-y insight. Great question! And plenty more where that came from — even a music video starring “Eisenberg” at the end. Click through to watch.

Should 11-Year-Olds Be Allowed To Pick Up Condoms and Get It in?

Read the original:

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is giving out a million free condoms, and the recipients are between the ages of 11 and 19 years old! You may be asking yourself, why are they handing out condoms to children and where are their parents? Well, according to the latest statistics from the PDOH, Philadelphia has the highest rate of sexually active teens younger than 13 years old. The website home page of the Take Control Philly campaign asks the question, “Having sex? Protect yourself from chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis. Get free condoms!” The site tells 11 to 19 year olds where they can find free condoms near their homes. It also has a mail order free condom offer along with videos such as the one below that teaches the youngsters how to wear condoms. So the big question is, should condoms should be available to 11 year olds? Or should we teach our children that abstinence is the best choice at their age? Clearly health officials are trying to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. If these children are going to have sex, they have the RIGHT to know how to protect themselves. But some believe that handing out free condoms just do more damage to the situation, promoting a message to teens that it’s cool to have sex, as long as it’s protected. It’s rather disturbing to think that 11 year olds can stop by their nearest health center, pick up some free condoms, and then go have sex in a school yard or public bathroom. Why not just teach these children to value their bodies and avoid taking the risk in the first place? What do you think? The Hills Finale Recap: The End of an Error

After six seasons of drama, The Hills ended its run on MTV in appropriate fashion, with cameras panning back to expose just how manufactured that drama is. More on that in a little bit. Supposedly, Kristin Cavallari is moving to Europe, because she “needs a change.” Note: she never went to Europe, and she never pined for Brody Jenner. At all. Elsewhere, Lo and Scott move in together, Audrina decided to get a new house by the beach, and Stephanie is kinda dating that guy Josh now, if anyone cares. Nowhere to be found, except dressed like an old man outside the finale party? Spencer Pratt. Here’s THG’s recap of Tuesday’s series finale of The Hills … FINAL FOUR: The female stars of The Hills at the series finale party. Stephanie Pratt tells the girls she is happy with her life, while Audrina Patridge says she’s still trying to figure hers out. When is she NOT trying to do that? Minus 4 . Brody plays golf with the guys and says he didn’t realize things with Kristin would take the turn they did. Yeah, the scripts are sometimes pretty surprising. Plus 5 . Kristin tells Stacie about Brody’s girlfriend and admits she’s “bummed.” We are too. They won’t even mention Avril Lavigne by name, and he can do better. Minus 3 . Lo and Scott move in together. Cute. Plus 6 , despite the obvious fact they’re just looking to kill time with Stephanie and Lo, bit players for much of the series. “Bored” Kristin tells Brody she’s moving to Europe (LOL) for the summer or maybe longer (ROTFL). Naturally, she’s having a big goodbye bash with cameras! Plus 8 . Not even an acknowledgment of Spencer Pratt and/or Heidi Montag , Hills? Where did they even go? Did Adam DiVello have Heidi bumped off? We worry. Minus 20 . HAVE YOU SEEN THIS PERSON? If so, contact local authorities . Brody finally arrives and says he didn’t understand her feelings. Kristin is tearful as Brody says he’ll miss her. “Don’t leave,” he pleads. She wipes a tear away from his supposedly sad face and hugs him. Kristin even says this is a crock . Minus 34 . Audrina isn’t going to Kristin’s because she wants to move away from the “scene” and avoid bumping into Justin-Bobby. We’d steer clear of the stench too. Plus 7 . Scott to Lo, who he says he would marry right now: “It takes a while to find the right person and you are perfect.” Minus 11 . Just propose if you’re serious, dude. As Kristin speeds off, cameras focus on Brody with the Hollywood sign behind him … but it was only a painting, later revealed to show the camera crew and staff. Then the cameras stop rolling, Kristin gets out of the limo and hugs Brody, despite the bull$h!t regarding her leaving. What a giant Eff You to fans. Plus 100 . FINALE TOTAL: +54 . SEASON TOTAL: +13 .

Bristol Palin: Engaged to Levi Johnston!

Having recently rekindled their romance, Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are now engaged – and not just to bolster her mom’s poll numbers this time! “We got engaged two weeks ago,” the daughter of Sarah Palin tells Us Weekly . “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents.” Bristol Palin is 19 and Levi Johnston is 20. They famously called off their previous engagement weeks after welcoming son Tripp in December 2008. After an icy period of estrangement, nasty accusations and PR wars, they reconnected a few months ago while working out custody plans for Tripp. “I really thought we were over,” Levi said. “So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking, and then we took Tripp for a walk.” Bristol and Levi now and during their previous fake engagement . She says when Levi Johnston left that night, “we didn’t hug or kiss, but I was thinking how different it was. He texted me: ‘I miss you. I love you.'” “‘I want to be with you again’ … I was in shock.” Perhaps the most amazing part, if you don’t believe this is being embellished to sell magazines of course, is that the former Republican Vice Presidential nominee has been kept in the dark about the youngsters’ plans … until now! Says Bristol: “It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board.” But will she? Sarah and Todd Palin said in a statement: “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.” Sounds like a thumbs-up to us … or not? Either way, congratulations to the young couple. We’re happy for them … but still, we gotta ask … Will Bristol and Levi last this time?
