The latest teaser for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is an effective one. The clip introduces General Zod via a grainy video transmission that makes Superman’s arch enemy look a lot creepier than he does in production stills. The voice clearly belongs to actor Michael Shannon , who plays Zod in this latest reboot of Warner’s Superman franchise, but the staticky image leaves the impression that the Kryptonian wack-job is wearing some sort of mask with weird eyes and an exceptionally elongated chin. Either that or Zod trimmed his goatee and got some sleep after sending this transmission. (See the photo above.) The calm way in which the baddie warns that the planet Earth will “suffer the consequences” if Kal-El (Superman’s Kryptonian name) doesn’t surrender is also a nice chilling touch. There may be more to look at in a couple of days or so. ComingSoon.net reports that another site IWillFindHim.com is counting down from 48 hours, possibly for a trailer. Since I can’t read Kryptonian, or whatever language that is on the screen, I’ll take their word for it. Why am I not excited about Pacific Rim ? I’m mostly a fan of Guillermo del Toro ‘s work, particularly the superb Pan’s Labyrinth , but the three teaser clips that have been released for the filmmaker’s hotly anticipated mechs-vs-monsters summer sci-fi film have all left me cold. Part of the problem is that they’re all virtually the same. The new international TV spot, for instance, is a condensed retread of the earlier trailers, and its brevity draws attention to what I think may be the film’s biggest weakness: a lame monster. Yes, the giant human-piloted Jaeger mechs are impressive — even if they defy science and physics — but their enemies, which are called Kaiju , Japanese for “strange beast,” don’t look the fearsome, formidable part they’re supposed to play in the picture. (If you’re okay with spoilers, this review of the Pacific Rim script indicates that the Kaiju overwhelm the Jaegers.) Clearly, del Toro is paying homage to the Japanese Toho Studios kaiju films of the 1950s, ’60s and beyond — the Godzilla franchise being the most well known of them. The problem is, the creature in the Pacific Rim looks like it came directly from the set of one of those hokey movies and didn’t stop by the visual effects department to get a rad new upgrade. Remember, Gamera , the amusing flying turtle (which was not a Toho creation)? If you took the body of that ’60s-era monster and grafted the head of Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Godzilla onto it — not a movie that any filmmaker should be referencing — then you’d get a creature similar to the one you see in the photo above and trailer below. Not-So-Scary Monster Perhaps del Toro is keeping more fearsome creatures under wraps. The Kaiju apparently hail from another universe — a kind of interstellar Monster Island — so conceptually there could be more than one species. I hope so. If the creature in the teasers is all we get, then Pacific Rim could suffer from a real tension deficit. One other thing: It’s time to give Idris Elba’s “Today, we are canceling the apocalypse!” speech a rest. It was rousing the first 10 times I heard it — in January. Three months later, it’s ripe to be satirized, and the movie isn’t out until July 12. What do you think? More on Pacific Rim : ‘Pacific Rim’ Vs. A handful of new Star Trek Into Darkness photos have hit the web, and they’re nothing to write home about, but the image of space-suited Spock ( Zachary Quinto ) did catch my attention. Judging from the steam rising up off the Vulcan’s protective gear, I’m guessing that this image could serve as an “After” shot to the “Before” image below of Spock hanging out in what’s been reported as a volcano. (Or is that vulcan-o? Ba-dum-bump!) The best part? Spock’s expression remains virtually the same no matter what temperature he’s at. Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

The parody Twitter account that bore Amour director Michael Haneke’s name actually got a few things right about the Austrian director. On Thursday, Benjamin Lee, the Shortlist.com Deputy Editor who, earlier this week, revealed himself to be the prankster behind the memorably loopy @Michael_Haneke parody Twitter feed, wrote about learning that the real Haneke is more of a “goofball” than he expected. And a cat lover, too. Benjamin Lee On The Real Vs. Fake Michael Haneke Twitter Account In a column for the British newspaper, The Guardian , Lee explained that he had started the Twitter account as a “purposely lowbrow” response to the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s “chilly, occasionally pretentious demeanour” and his contempt for the mainstream. Part of the fake Haneke’s shtick included repeated references to his “stinky cat,” which Lee explained, ” was a recurring joke made to distance the two Hanekes even more, not being able to imagine the director of The White Ribbon making so many references to his cat’s flatulence.” Lee has since learned that the two Hanekes are a bit closer than he imagined. While watching Yves Montmayeur’s documentary about Haneke, Michael H. – Profession: Director, he wrote that he was shocked to discover that Haneke actually is “the proud owner of more than one cat, a fact that few people know.” He also noted: “In the documentary, however, Haneke comes off as refreshingly candid. He has a charming sense of humour. Not that I had thought him humourless (there are darkly comic moments in The Piano Teacher and Funny Games ), but I hadn’t expected him to be a goofball. For example, when assembled with the Time of the Wolf cast, he pulls the classic bunny ears prank behind one of the child actors. Not what you might expect from the man who believes that all movies should assault the viewer.” Haneke’s Reaction To The Twitter Parody Lee also admitted that he was looking to get a rise out of the filmmaker: When I started tweeting as Haneke, I was intrigued by what his reaction would be. I was expecting apathy and possibly contempt but he expressed intrigue and, yes, a small amount of contempt. “I tried to read some of the posts but my English isn’t good enough to allow me that,” he said in an interview . “I’m really not interested in what he’s writing, but I’m fascinated by the fact that 25,000 people have subscribed to this feed of nonsense!” I fear that my affectionate spoofing has helped to prove his thoughts on the mainstream to be horribly accurate. But at least I’ve shone a light on those unsung cats of his LOL. I wonder what the real Haneke makes of this now. At the very least, he should let the world know whether his cats are flatulent. Back in October, I wrote about how Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige was spinning Iron Man 3 villain the Mandarin as international rather than Chinese, his ethnicity in the Marvel universe. “It’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end,” Feige told Entertainment Weekly at the time. The Mandarin’s topknot is supposed to evoke a Japanese samurai while EW called his beard “bin Laden-esque.” And now, Marvel has just released a new Iron Man 3 poster featuring the baddie, as portrayed by Ben Kingsley , wearing sunglasses, and my first thought upon seeing them was…”Oppan Gangnam Style !” I know the shades Kingsley’s wearing aren’t even close to the ones that Psy sports in the video, but that’s the vibe I get. And I think there’s an argument to be made for the Korean rapper to be a part of the pastiche. After all, his earlier work contained anti-American lyrics, and he still managed to conquer us. The Mandarin Flosses Some Gangnam Style In New ‘Iron Man 3’ Poster
I’ve noted this a few times now, but of all the jokes that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler told during their killer Golden Globes performance , the one that resonated most with me was their jab at Avatar director James Cameron : “I haven’t been following the controversy surrounding Zero Dark Thirty , ” Poehler said name-checking director Kathryn Bigelow . “But when it comes to torture, I trust the woman who spent three years married to James Cameron.” I loved the joke because it was daring — a tough one to pull off in an industry crowd that tends to protect its own even when they may despise that person behind his back. ( Jessica Chastain’s televised gasp said volumes.) Poehler pulled it off beautifully and, in an interview that was posted on Friday in The Huffington Post , she finally revealed the author of the joke. The Parks and Recreation actress and her series co-star and Adam Scott t alked to the site about the movie that they premiered at Sundance, A.C.O.D ., which stands for Adult Children of Divorce, and in the process, Poehler revealed that the Cameron line was the work of 30 Rock writer Sam Means . Here’s the excerpt that appears on HuffPo. You did a great job co-hosting the Golden Globes. Scott: Didn’t she? Poehler: Thank you. I do feel that you may have been taken off the short list for “Avatar 2.” Poehler: [Laughs.] Perhaps! Perhaps. Not just with the James Cameron joke, but anytime you do a joke like that, can there be repercussion? Or do people take that in stride? Poehler: I hope so. There was nothing in that moment that we walked away from feeling bad about. There was never a moment that we walked away going, “Was that too … ” You know, we vetted our own jokes with each other. Tina and I have had a lot of experience doing those kind of jokes, so we know when things feel too “something.” That room was a special kind of room, so we had to think about how to play to that room. So, we didn’t regret anything that we had said or felt like we were coming in a weird way. And if it’s funny, you can get away with a lot, hopefully. Scott: And I was saying before, James Cameron … even he has to appreciate what a beautifully crafted joke that was. Poehler: Written by a gentleman named Sam Means — a writer for “30 Rock.” He wrote that joke. I’m assuming there was no hesitation when you heard that joke. Poehler: Oh, no. It’s a great joke. Good work, Mr. Means. Now, if you happen to notice a non-descript black van following you, here’s a little advice: run. Amour director Michael Haneke is aware of the parody Twitter account that bears his name, and, as you might expect from a filmmaker who’s made an incredibly intense, Oscar-nominated film about love, life and death, he’s not too worked up about it. @Michael_Haneke has been live on the social media site since November and has amassed more than 15,000 followers by adopting a voice that couldn’t be more at odds with the 70-year-old Austrian filmmaker’s bleak, unsentimental perspective: The Twitter-verse version of Haneke sounds like a tequila-drinking, hip-hop-loving frat boy twink who’s as contemporary as the real director is old school. He also loves to zing Terrence Malick , to remind Ben Affleck that he was not nominated for a Best Director Oscar and to gloat over the five Oscar nominations that Amour got on Jan. 10. That means a lot of laughs, although Haneke doesn’t necessarily see the humor in it. At the Golden Globes on Sunday night, The Los Angeles Times asked the real Haneke about the Twitter parody, and the director told the paper that his students at the Vienna Film Academy where he teaches, “said there was a weird Twitter account.” Then he added: “But I’m not that interested in that kind of thing. It’s not for me.” He doesn’t sound all that incensed, and he shouldn’t be.
