‘I’m still clicking up the track,’ latest castoff says of his post-‘Idol’ career. By Gil Kaufman James Durbin is eliminated on Thursday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX James Durbin had a weird feeling when he got to the “American Idol” studios on Thursday. “Something was off with the kinetic energy,” he said Friday (May 13) during a call with reporters. “I felt it in people’s body language. … There was a real somber feeling.” Asked if he was blindsided, then, by the news that he would be going home in fourth place on the show later that night, Durbin paused and said, “I’m not going to lie, I definitely was.” He said he “freaked out” a bit just before the show went on air and had a feeling that his ride might be over. With less than an hour of sleep since his surprise ouster, Durbin said the hours since his elimination had been a “whirlwind” of emotion. “I’ve been really thinking about why I came on this show and why I even auditioned in the first place,” he said. “It’s for my family and to try and give a voice to a genre of music that seems like it’s slowly fading away. I really accomplished a lot on the show, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” While other fourth-place finishers, including rocker Chris Daughtry , have said not winning “Idol” was probably the best thing that ever happened to them, Durbin said he understood that sentiment, but “winning would have been just great too.” He said his first instinct when host Ryan Seacrest broke the news was to think about how badly he’d wanted to win and fight back the feeling that somehow he’d failed. But after some time to reflect, Durbin said he’d come around on that thought. “I haven’t failed at all,” he said, adding a refrain often heard from “Idol” finalists. “This is just the beginning.” The singer, who provided one of the most emotionally engaging moments of the season with his tearful farewell, compared the journey on “Idol” to a roller coaster, saying it has loops and corkscrews and that while some people think of elimination as the first step toward the crazy ride down the other side of the fame hill, he sees it differently. “I’m still clicking up the track,” he said of his wild ride yet to come. “I’m really, really stoked.” While some of his castmates have hooked up with movie starlets , Durbin said one of the biggest celebrity perks he enjoyed on “Idol” was becoming close to professional wrestler and “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Chris Jericho , whose show is filmed at the same studio as “Idol.” For the lifelong wrestling fan, who always idolized Jericho, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And given that Jericho fronts his own metal band, the boys bonded over body slams, life on the road and all things hard rock. Given the Hollywood-ready arc of his story — from his Asperger’s and Tourette’s syndrome to the death of his musician father from a drug overdose when James was 9 years old — someone asked who the singer might like to see portray him in a movie. At first, he was speechless and then said he might want to do the honors himself. But then he suggested Matt Damon, since some people have said he resembles the actor, and maybe Steven Seagal for his older incarnation, since he used to rock a Seagal-like ponytail back in the day. Durbin has lots of plans for his debut album. He’d like to work with Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, reunite with guitar legend Zakk Wylde and bring out his “secret weapon,” his best friend from home who is a shredding guitar player. As he’s said before, James wants to bring back the classic metal sound, starting with an iconic singer/guitarist pairing along the lines of Wylde and Ozzy Osbourne or Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. And given the chance, he’d like to re-create the sound of his favorite record, the 1983 debut from late Black Sabbath metal screamer and solo star Ronnie James Dio, Holy Diver. He wouldn’t give any details, but Durbin said he heard the song that might be his first single Thursday. “I really dig it,” he said of the unnamed tune. “It’s something I can really work.” He described it as having a heavy edge, but also being radio-friendly enough to get airplay. With no regrets, Durbin did point out his one potential misstep on the show when asked why his number might have been called Thursday. Referring again to his friendship with wrestler Jericho, he noted that the last song Jericho danced to on “Stars” was, yes, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” ” ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ eliminated James Durbin, Chris Jericho and Tony Soprano,” he said with a laugh. A week ago, Kirstie Alley fell to the floor, only to make a full recovery on Dancing With the Stars. Unfortunately, she suffered another mishap last night. This time, it was a footwear malfunction. Kirstie and Maksim Chmerkovskiy had to fight through more adversity as Alley’s left shoe fell off in mid-waltz. Just like the previous week, they recovered well enough to earn a respectable score – 22 out of 30 – plus sympathy and respect from fans and judges. Kirstie Alley Loses Shoe on Dancing With the Stars “You didn’t miss a beat,” said Carrie Ann Inaba. Bruno Tonioli agreed, while Len Goodman was less impressed, pointing out the need for improvement. Still, we’d be surprised if Kirstie and Maks were in jeopardy after a second straight week of bouncing back strongly from a somewhat freakish setback. Another gal who should be safe? Watch it, and check out the full scoreboard, after the jump … Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas – DWTS Week 4 That put them just ahead of the Hines Ward and Kym Johnson and Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff. Both of those couples notched scores of 25. Len grumbled about Chelsea’s unorthodox choreography, but technically, the judges could not deny that Kane’s was the best dance of the night. At the bottom of the heap and definitely at risk of elimination tonight are Kendra Wilkinson and Louis van Amstel, who bombed with an 18. Monday’s Dancing With the Stars brought emotional routines and notable moments, such as Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kirstie Alley taking a spill, but rising again. As far as scoring was concerned, talk show host Wendy Williams earned the night’s lowest scores – just 15 points out of 30 – for a stiff fox trot with Tony Dovolani. She was well back of the field, but was there a chance voters could propel her past another low flier, like Chris Jericho, to survive another week on DWTS? Follow the jump to see who was eliminated on the results show … Wendy Williams was in fact was eliminated on the results show. While she dubiously (and probably jokingly) was later quoted as saying “we were robbed,” she exited the ballroom gracefully and with trademark humor. There was also an element of relief in this for her. “I’m probably the busiest person in terms of flying back and forth. In addition to that, I have a marriage and a child and a litany of other things,” she said. Silver lining found. Williams thanked the judges and her partner, Tony Dovolani, “for teaching me how to dance,” implying that he accomplished a lot. “Despite stereotypes, this is one black girl who can’t do the running man.” So far, the first two results show have gone according to plan as far as scoring is concerned. Nine remain. Who do you think will win this? [Photos: ABC]
The ‘Love Line’ co-host says he made a ‘lifelong friend’ in partner Lacey Schwimmer. By Kelley L. Carter Lacey Schwimmer and Mike Catherwood on “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday Photo: ABC For about a week now, much of the talk about “Dancing With the Stars” has focused on whether Chris Brown would (or should) perform on Tuesday night’s elimination episode. Fortunately for fans of dance, Brown’s pre-taped performance of “Yeah 3x” and a medley of “Forever” and “Beautiful” was relatively uneventful, so the R&B singer didn’t eclipse the show’s true focus: who would be the first person booted from the 12th season of the popular ABC show. It seemed to be not too much of a surprise when “Love Line” co-host Mike Catherwood’s name was called. The low-scoring dancer — who was partnered with Lacey Schwimmer — had improved from last week by four points, but it clearly wasn’t enough to spare him for another week. Top-scoring celebrities Ralph Macchio, Kirstie Alley, Chris Jericho, Hines Ward and Romeo were among the judges’ favorite dancers and easily were saved for next week. Last-place dancer Catherwood was in the bottom three with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard and talk-show hostess Wendy Williams. When the radio personality was told by host Tom Bergeron that he would be leaving, he talked up how valuable his short time on the show had been. “It’s been nothing but a pleasurable experience,” he said, thanking fans of his radio show and his “Dancing With the Stars” peers. “It sucks to be sent home first, but I’ve made a lot of good friends. America obviously knows that Lacey Schwimmer is a beautiful person on the outside, but everybody needs to know she’s equally, if not more, beautiful on the inside. I’ve made a lifelong friend.” Related Photos The 2011 ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Cast’s Movie Past ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 12 Cast Revealed
Sheen showed up during Kimmel’s chat with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and handed out promotional items to the audience. By Gil Kaufman Charlie Sheen kisses Jimmy Kimmel on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Monday night Photo: ABC Troubled actor Charlie Sheen has been relatively quiet (for him) over the past week as he prepares for the April 2 launch of his 20-date “Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option Show,” but he took some time out from his busy webcasting schedule on Monday to drop in on ” Jimmy Kimmel Live! ” Kimmel was in the midst of interviewing outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban when the subject of Sheen came up. Cuban was praising the “Platoon” star and explaining that he has been in discussions with Sheen about a number of projects when Sheen burst onto the stage carrying a plastic shopping bag filled with swag and yelling, “How we doin?” to the studio audience. After planting a big, wet kiss on a surprised-looking Kimmel’s face, a very excited Sheen soaked up the screams of the crowd, then signed a copy of musical guest Brett Dennen’s album and handed it to an audience member before taking a seat to chat with Kimmel. “You should borrow the band for the talk show that you’re doing. It’s always better with a band,” Kimmel counseled Sheen. Sheen motioned toward Kimmel’s band and joked, “Pack it up right now, dammit!” “I can’t stay … sorry,” Sheen told the disappointed audience. “I have a show to write, dammit!” He then reached into his bag and reminded Cuban that the billionaire had forgotten his Sheen merchandise when he visited the house earlier in the day. Sheen pulled out a half-dozen promotional shirts and tossed them out to the studio audience, including one with an adorable kitten staring at the camera and the tag line, “I have tiger’s blood in me.” After complimenting Kimmel for his “very moist” lips, Sheen presented the host with a special gift, a used-looking white coffee mug with a sticker of an adorable baby fox on it. “I’ll let you figure it out, my man,” he said when Kimmel questioned the present. And just like that, Sheen was off the set like a rocket, leaving confusion and some “Duh, Winning!” shirts in his wake. After getting fired from “Two and a Half Men,” rumors surfaced this week that Sheen was considering launching a late-night show on the Fox network, though Radar Online countered that Sheen’s former bosses at CBS were possibly trying to lure him back to his old gig after this month’s messy breakup. Stars show Twitter love for actress Chelsea Kane and dance pro Tony Dovolani as the reality show kicks off a new season. By Jocelyn Vena The Jonas Brothers Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage On Monday night, the new season of “Dancing With the Stars” kicked off, and while the latest installment of the show is noticeably absent of MTV reality stars, it does have a Disney starlet. Disney stars tend to be a staple on the hit TV dance competition and this time around Chelsea Kane has been recruited. Under her given name, Chelsea Staub, the actress has appeared on such hit shows as “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “JONAS.” Kane’s co-stars of the latter program sent out their love and support to the 22-year-old, who is dancing with Mark Ballas. She ended up getting 21 out of possible 30, and the Jonas Brothers seemed proud of their one-time TV cohort. “Team Kanenball! Help support @ChelseaKane tonight on DWTS!” the brothers tweeted , while Nick Jonas added , “How awesome was @ChelseaKane on #DWTS!” Former contestant and “Hills” star Audrina Patridge also checked out the premiere episode, and showed her love and support for her former dance partner, pro Tony Dovolani. She tweeted , “Watching @Tonydovolani and Wendy Williams on dwts!!!! ….Good job guys:) I miss it!!!!!!” Patridge and Dovolani were frontrunners last season, but it seems that he’s not having as easy as a go of it with his new partner. He and Williams only clocked in with 14 points. The talk-show host, however, didn’t have the lowest score of the night. That distinction was bestowed on “Loveline” co-host Mike Catherwood, who managed to only scrounge up a 13. The highest score of the evening went to Ralph Macchio, who seemed to channel some of those “Karate Kid” moves as he notched a 24. As for the remaining celebrity dancers, Kristie Alley scored a 23, footballer Hines Ward rated a 21, singer Romeo and WWE wrestler Chris Jericho both tallied 19 points, model Petra Nemcova and Playboy Playmate Kendra Wilkinson each notched an 18, and Sugar Ray Leonard earned a 17. Downfall , ABC’ s new entry in the legacy of game shows with a “falling” conceit, debuts tonight. Could you answer general knowledge questions on a skyscraper that threatened to collapse beneath you? What if Chris Jericho was reading the questions with the ferocity of a middle-schooler who eats cane sugar for breakfast? What if the show turned into an upsetting WCW retread at a moment’s notice? With Jericho, that’s always a possibility. You can bow out now.
