Coldplay Rep Shoots Down Rumors Of October Album Release

Despite rumors of a delay, the band’s spokesperson says no release date was ever set. By James Montgomery Coldplay’s Chris Martin Photo: Mark Metcalfe/ Getty Images You may already have an idea about what Coldplay’s upcoming album is about — namely “love, addiction, OCD, escape and working for someone you don’t like” — but up until now, you probably had no idea when the still-untitled disc would be hitting stores. But when the band began lining up headlining dates on summer festivals (Glastonbury, T in the Park, etc.), fans interpreted that to mean that Coldplay were also readying their fifth full-length for release, meaning that a brand-new album should be only a few months away. Of course, that optimism was dashed when a well-informed member of Coldplay fansite Coldplaying.com posted that the album had been pushed back until October, writing, “I can confirm the change of plans in the Coldplay camp regarding the schedule[d] release of LP5, originally before summer. Hope people can wait until October.” Given that this particular member had, in the past, seemed to have been privy to some top-secret Coldplay information (he/she claimed to have heard “Violet Hill,” the first single off the band’s Viva la Vida album, two weeks before the song premiered, and wrote about it in shockingly accurate terms to prove it), word of the October release quickly began spreading as chapter and verse amongst Coldplay fans. The only problem? According to a spokesperson for the band, there is no release date for Coldplay’s new album, nor has there even been one. “A release date has not yet been set for Coldplay’s next studio album,” that spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. Coldplay are currently working on the new album with frequent collaborators Brian Eno and Markus Dravs. Last month, frontman Chris Martin told BBC’s Radio 1 is a “thinly veiled account of what happens within the group,” but added that it’s not entirely about interpersonal conflict. “[It] also has a lot of uplifting stuff,” he said. “It’s supposed to be about life, the good stuff and the bad stuff. Everything.” Related Artists Coldplay

Coldplay Working On A Concept Album

Follow-up to Viva la Vida doesn’t yet have a release date or title. By Gil Kaufman Coldplay Photo: Eamonn McCormack/ WireImage One of the endearing quirks of Coldplay is that, despite their slow march to worldwide rock stardom over the past decade, they’ve remained self-deprecating and firmly focused on writing expansive pop songs without falling into the trap of trying to become “important.” But in the sessions for their fifth album, the follow-up to the smash 2008 hit Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, singer Chris Martin and his band are finally taking the dreaded “CA” plunge — as in “concept album.” “It’s from the point of view of two people who are a bit lost,” Martin told BBC News about the Brian Eno-produced disc. “Two like-minded outsiders who meet in a very difficult environment and therefore have a journey together.” After exploring the high-minded issues of love and war on the Grammy-winning Viva la Vida, Martin promised that the new disc will be more intimate and more worldly. “It’s a concept album, but it’s supposed to be very personal within a big framework. Does that make sense?” he said. Working again with Eno (David Bowie, U2), Martin said the band is leaning on the producer and Roxy Music co-founder to once more push them to explode their sound. “Brian is the sower of seeds and ideas and experimenting, which is very liberating. Then [collaborator] Marcus [Dravs]’ job is to come in after all that’s been done and try and sculpt it into some kind of releasable format.” They’ve been working on the album for more than a year, during sessions that the BBC described as “chaotic,” which left Coldplay with a number of half-formed and half-completed tracks. Martin said the group spent a year “making a lot of noise” that now needs to be sorted out and formed into actual songs. There’s no release date scheduled for the yet-untitled disc, but fans will get a brief glimpse at Coldplay later this month when they play a pair of sold-out gigs for the U.K. homeless charity Crisis. “I think it will be good for us to get our gig feet on for a couple of days because sometimes you can get very institutionalized in the studio,” Martin said. “There’s a danger that you forget that you’re going to have to play this for people and that’s when music can become a little bit silly.” They’ve also released the Yuletide single “Christmas Lights” to tide their fans over. The plaintive piano ballad about a holiday lover’s spat is accompanied by a whimsical performance video set on a colorful stage in the middle of a twinkling sea of lights. Coldplay’s New Album Could Be Ready By Christmas

Producer Brian Eno calls fifth LP ‘different from anything they’ve done before.’ By James Montgomery Coldplay’s Chris Martin Photo: ChinaFotoPress/Getty Images Coldplay are aiming to have their new album in stores by Christmas, and once again, they’ve tapped Brian Eno to help them make that goal a reality. That’s according to Eno himself, who told BBC Radio’s 6 Music that he’s joined forces with the band again (he produced 2008’s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends ) for an album that should be available just in time for the holidays. “I think it could be. It’s quite different from anything they’ve done before … so far, anyway,” Eno said. “I don’t know how it will end up being, but it’s very fresh.” As was the case with the Viva la Vida sessions (which saw the band travel throughout much of Central and South America and record in a series of Barcelona churches) and the subsequent studio time that birthed the quickie Prospekt’s March EP, Eno is shaking things up once again. This time he’s forcing Martin to work separately from his Coldplay mates and pairing up the band members at random. “I think that if you have a group of four people, that’s lots of possible combinations,” he explained. “You can have any one of them on their own, and you can have lots of couples within that four. … I think every one of those is a unique musical entity that will produce something unique. It’s not rocket science, and it’s not Svengali-ism either. It’s not some attempt to subvert the band, but just to see what other possibilities are lurking within them that might not come out within their normal working situations.” Coldplay are currently on tour in South America, but they’ve already begun work on the new album, in a brand-new London studio (which is reportedly a converted church). They’ve been chronicling the experience in a series of blog posts written by the mysterious “Roadie #42,” and it sounds very much like the sessions are going quite well. Demos are being mixed, and there’s even a tentative track listing for the new album. “Work begins brisk and early each day with minds focused intently on the job in hand,” one blog entry reads. “If a song is deemed not to be working, the root of the pain is sought out and generally identified very quickly. New approaches, slight massages or even radical amputations are approached with urgency. Co-producers Rik Simpson and Dan Green have put together a bunch of rough mixes and sequenced them together according to the ‘possible running order’ that Chris recently wrote up. … There is now a file all locked up in the depths of the building that they can huddle round and listen to from start to finish. They can judge their progress now — and then again when they get home.” A spokesperson for Coldplay could not be reached for comment by press time. Related Artists Coldplay
