‘I think we go on right after Chris Brown or something, and I don’t want to dance after Chris Brown has been dancing,’ Dave Grohl says. By James Montgomery Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Nate Mendel Photo: Peter Wafzig/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — One of the oddest moments during Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards might have nothing to do with Adele not winning everything. It could very well end up being the recently announced tribute to electronic music, a performance that will bring together David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Deadmau5 and, uh … Foo Fighters . And though one of those things is most certainly not like the other, the combination just doesn’t seem all that bizarre to Foos frontman Dave Grohl. He’s learned firsthand that the gap between rock and electronica isn’t all that wide, as he told MTV News on the red carpet at Friday night’s pre-Grammy MusicCares concert. “Well, Deadmau5 is maybe the only EDM artist I know because we did a bunch of festivals over the summer, and for whatever reason, he would be headlining over there while we were headlining over here,” he said. “I guess people thought that our audiences would split, but our audiences are compatible in a way, because what he does … rocks. “The remix that he did for [Foos’ single] ‘Rope’ is really good, and it’s clever; it’s not just some bullsh– dance sh–,” he continued. “He actually did a rearrangement … so when we were asked to perform with him, we said OK.” And though Grohl wouldn’t divulge any details of what may happen during the Foos’ brief excursion into electro (“I think you have to call it ‘EDM’,” he pointed out), he did let us know what won’t : namely, dancing of any sort. “What do you think, I’m going to f—ing dance? ” he laughed. “When we got asked to do it, I said, ‘I can’t do it. I can’t dance.’ I think we go on right after Chris Brown or something, and I don’t want to dance after Chris Brown has been dancing. Nobody can dance like that guy.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. If you thought the Sarah Palin campaign-boosting documentary The Undefeated wouldn’t resort to such propaganda-y things as comparing the former half-term Alaskan governor to a Marine while video of a burning building plays onscreen, some bad news : it does. On the upside, however, is this hilarious juxtaposition: “On day one, Governor Palin made it absolutely clear that this was a different governor,” says someone in voiceover just as a dollar bill is being cut up with scissors. Different! (Alternate: That’s one way to slash the budget?) The trailer for The Undefeated is here.
The Ward , John Carpenter’s first directorial effort in 10 years, is not an ideal hiatus-buster. The premise itself — a psych ward for young women is the site of a killing spree — is somewhat pre-Carpenter, and the toe-dip into torture porn feels a little desperate. But his budget-blond lead, B-movie mistress Amber Heard, is well-chosen, and the combination of an excellent supporting cast and a pliable theme work to offset the sizable debits incurred by the often rote direction and seriously iffy ending.

This could be the greatest thing to happen to T-Mobile customers … or the worst thing to happen to the cell phone industry. AT&T Inc. has agreed to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion, but the deal isn’t set to close until a year from now, and it will likely face tough regulatory scrutiny. Here’s what a completed deal could mean for customers: – Bigger choice of phones for T-Mobile subscribers. T-Mobile, as a much smaller carrier than AT&T, doesn’t get as many exclusives on top-line phones, and it doesn’t have the iPhone. This won’t be a big benefit to T-Mobile subscribers who don’t have contracts – if they want the iPhone today, they can sign up with AT&T or Verizon Wireless. But subscribers under contract would find it easier to upgrade to an iPhone. – Fewer pricing plans to choose from. T-Mobile and AT&T have different offerings, some of which might disappear from the market. – No more unlimited data plans. AT&T has stopped offering unlimited data plans in favor of plans with monthly data usage caps and overage fees. T-Mobile USA still offers “unlimited” data for smartphones for $30 per month, but slows down downloads after 5 gigabytes of traffic in a month. If the deal closes, current “unlimited” subscribers would likely be grandfathered in, but AT&T would probably stop offering the plan to new subscribers. – Better network coverage. Combining the two networks will improve performance is some areas, because there will be more towers available. However, today’s AT&T phones can’t use T-Mobile’s 3G wireless data network, and vice versa, because they run on different frequencies. – Wider rural broadband coverage. AT&T is pledging to increase spending on the construction of a new ultrafast broadband network by $8 billion, to cover rural areas. – The big question is whether the combination would let AT&T, Verizon and Sprint raise prices on wireless service once competition from T-Mobile disappears. AT&T points out that prices have fallen through a decade of mergers in the industry, but public-interest groups are raising concerns. Source
Band returns to festival with free show played to 20,000-plus fans. By Zachary Swickey The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas performs at SXSW on Thursday Photo: Daniel Boczarski/Getty Images AUSTIN, Texas — It’s been 10 years since the Strokes’ legendary South by Southwest showcase at the tiny Iron Cactus. On Thursday night the band returned to the festival bigger than ever, playing a free show at the Auditorium Shores venue with the skyline of Austin as their backdrop. Walking onstage to the stomping sounds of “We Will Rock You,” the Strokes started things off with Room on Fire ‘s opener, “What Ever Happened?” as Julian Casablancas — strangling the microphone with a death grip — wailed, “I want to be forgotten/ And I don’t want to be reminded.” There’s a sense of irony when he says this to 20,000-plus fans, some of whom broke through the fencing to get in. The large venue was a departure from the typical SXSW fare, but if anything, the Strokes’ performance was an example of what these indie bands can become (or at least aspire to). Only Casablancas can pull off the combination of black leather jacket (popped collar included), sunglasses worn at night and what looked to be a calculator wristwatch. There’s an undeniable rock-star swagger about him, evident in his nonchalant attitude when commanding the riotous crowd. “SXSW, let’s do this,” he ordered as the plucking guitar sounds of “You Only Live Once” began. He then mumbled, “New single y’all” with a Southern drawl before bringing out “Under Cover of Darkness,” the first taste of the forthcoming Angles for the night. Come March 22, the five-year wait for the new album will be over, and if the crowd’s positive reaction to the single is any indication, it will be topping the charts. Appropriately, they then played their second single-to-be, “You’re So Right,” a pleasantly different song that features an Egyptian-like guitar hook of all things. The Strokes again brought back the memories. The crowd seemed to know every word to “Someday.” “Juicebox” was an opportunity for Fabrizio Moretti to show that he doesn’t make mistakes when pounding the drums, no matter how hard he’s playing (or how much fun he’s having). It wasn’t strictly greatest hits as the band snuck in “I Can’t Win,” but this didn’t last long with “Reptilia” being the very next song. For the encore, the crowd got the two other classic singles from Is This It. “Ladies and gentlemen, from Los Angeles, California, Nick Valensi!” Casablancas stated midway through “Hard to Explain,” commending his guitarist as he ripped through his solo. The Strokes gave the fans exactly what they wanted by closing the set with the song that started it all, “Last Nite,” during which fireworks erupted in the sky. What better way to end a party? NFL star Brett Favre will be fined $50,000 for allegedly sending former New York Jets employee Jenn Sterger explicit text messages and photos. Favre was NOT suspended for his actions, but the fine basically implies that an NFL investigation verified the rumors going around for months. Basically, Jenn saw pics of Brett Favre’s small junk . Amazing. SHE’S SO FINE : Worth a $50,000 one? Debatable. Jenn Sterger, who has posed for Playboy and Maxim , worked as a sideline personality for the Jets in 2008, Favre’s one season with the team. In addition to firing off photos of his wang, Brett allegedly asked Jenn for a video of her masturbating. Dude is very forward, give him that. Favre admitted leaving her voicemails, but denies sending her explicit pics. The fine was issued because the star was ” deemed uncooperative .” We would deem him a host of other things, too. A suspension wouldn’t have mattered that much anyway, as the beleaguered shot-caller was unlikely to play the Sunday because of injuries. You can listen to Favre’s voicemails, which are only slightly less absurd than these remarks by Tucker Carlson about Michael Vick, right here: Brett Favre Messages to Jenn Sterger
