Eli Roth’s Star Wars Comic Book is Kind of Adorable

Star Wars opened 35 years ago today, which prompted Movieline pal Mike Ryan to probe the memories of contemporary filmmakers for a collective glimpse at the film’s towering influence. It’s a pretty diverse sample, from Jon Favreau to Diablo Cody to Gary Ross to Simon Pegg, but for my money, nothing beats Eli Roth’s illustrated Star Wars comics… from age 8. On the one hand, the guy’s art hasn’t improved that much in 30 years. On the other, it was kind of adorable then! He explains: Star Wars was the movie that changed my life. I can honestly say there was life before Star Wars and after. I obsessively drew pictures of it and in school took it upon myself to write the next few chapters of the story since I couldn’t wait for the next films to come out. Star Wars became the center of my universe. It was all I wanted to talk about in school and on some level influenced everything I write. I wanted to be Han Solo, but deep down knew I was more of a C-3PO. Aww . Roth’s accompanying Exorcist illustration is equally if not more inspired; if nothing else, check out the piece for Joe Johnston’s incredible story of working with George Lucas. Lucky guy. Also: God, I am old. [ HuffPost Entertainment ]

‘Sweet Valley High’ To Be A Musical, Diablo Cody Confirms

‘It’s going to blow people’s minds,’ screenwriter tells MTV News about the in-the-works adaptation. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Diablo Cody Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Diablo Cody explored the life of one particular “Young Adult” author in her screenplay for the Charlize Theron film. Next up, she herself is taking on the challenge of adapting a beloved young-adult franchise, “Sweet Valley High,” for the big screen. And while she’s knee-deep in work for the project, when MTV News caught up with the screenwriter at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on Thursday night in Los Angeles, she revealed one very juicy detail about the adaptation. “Oh my gosh! OK, so I am so excited about ‘Sweet Valley High.’ There’s original songs being written for it right now, which is the most exciting development. They’re amazing. They’re being written by these Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning songwriters from Broadway who are the best,” she gushed, confirming that the film will be a musical version of the novels. “Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, who wrote [the Broadway show] ‘Next to Normal’; they’re amazing and I’m sorry, I could go on and on. But I’m very excited about ‘Sweet Valley High.’ It’s going to blow people’s minds. I haven’t really had the chance to talk about this yet, so it’s exciting.” The Francine Pascal novels (which debuted in 1983) follow the lives of twin teenagers, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, who live in Sweet Valley, California. The series is full of puppy love, teen angst and the kind of drama and comedy that keeps people tuning into the CW and ABC Family week after week. If you’ve never read the books before, Cody assures you that you can still love the movie. “It [has] a lot of familiar ’80s awesomeness for fans of the series, and if you’ve never heard of ‘Sweet Valley High’ you will want to,” she said, noting that casting plans are still to be determined. “Obviously I will be playing the twins. Old-fashioned ’60s-style split screen,” she joked. The Evil Dead Remake’s New Ash Is… Snow White

Sam Raimi ‘s Evil Dead reboot , which begins filming in New Zealand this spring, has found a new star to fill the shoes of original Ash Bruce Campbell , so to speak: 22-year-old British-born actress Lily Collins , who’ll next be seen playing Snow White to Julia Roberts’ evil queen in Tarsem’s fairytale adaptation Mirror Mirror . Let that sink in, Evil Deadites… deep breaths… now hit the jump for more details. According to Bloody Disgusting, Collins — last glimpsed, rather unfortunately, looking lovely on the lam with Taylor Lautner in Abduction — will lead a cast of five pretty young things who hole up in a cabin in the woods with a Book of the Dead. BD reports that Collins’ character Mia is a rebooted version of Ash; after a recent struggle with drugs, she and her pals head to the woods so she can detox but, of course, demonic possessions muck up the retreat. On board to direct is Fede Alvarez, discovered by Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures after his Uruguayan sci-fi short Panic Attack earned him notice, with a screenplay co-written by Rodo Sayagues and Diablo Cody . So while Raimi and Campbell are onboard as producers, this Evil Dead will be created by voices new to the franchise, clearly aimed at a new generation of fans. In which case, are you ready for a new lady Ash — one who’s as fair than them all? The Evil Dead reboot is set to hit theaters on April 12, 2013. • We’ve Discovered Who Plays The Lead In ‘The Evil Dead’ Remake — Meet The New Ash! [Bloody Disgusting]

Diablo Cody Shares Her 3 Most Anticipated Films of Fall with Movieline!

Diablo Cody has her own movie to anticipate with the release of her third feature Young Adult this December (featuring a thoroughly unamused Charlize Theron ), but the Academy Award winner took time out tell Movieline which three films she most looks forward to seeing. What will make the cut? The Iron Lady ? Carnage ? A Dangerous Method ? Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip Wrecked ? Click through for her adroit (and quite cheeky) observations.
