In the end, Lakers beat Celtics at their own grinding game

‘It was exactly the type of game we wanted,’ Boston Coach Doc Rivers says — except for the final score. Ugly, brutish basketball favored the boys from Boston.

Texas Legislators, Still Hustlin’: Houston To The Big 12?

Texan politicians of various stripes are legendary for their ability to shape the landscape of college football. (The most notorious example of this is then-governor Ann Richards’ lobbying for the inclusion of Baylor in the Big 12.) It should come as no real surprise, then, that a large-ish group of legislators isn’t through turning the conference this way and that, and their desires are fixed on Houston : State Reps. Garnet Coleman and Bill Callegari, both from the Houston area, co-wrote a letter Thursday asking Big 12 officials to consider adding the university to the conference. “UH is the third largest university in Texas, and is on track to rank among the top research universities in this state,” the letter says. “Despite UH’s local and statewide prominence, the university does not belong to a strong BCS conference such as the Big 12. The Cougars, the city of Houston, and the state of Texas deserve better.” It’s frankly not a bad idea. Houston’s a sizable TV market (though likely already saturated thanks to the sprawling reach of the Texas alumni base), and their football team, ranked first in the nation in total, passing, and scoring offense in 2009, would do the popular conception of defense-free Big 12 football proud. The move would also be a step towards healing a semantic rift. Texans are a pragmatic people, and the thought of them continuing to field a 10-team conference named “12” just doesn’t sit well. (Leave the imaginary numbers for those fancy lads up north.)

Lakers Rally Past Celtics for NBA Title

Filed under: NBA Finals Make it back-to-back for the Los Angeles Lakers . In a hotly-contested battle decided in the final frame, the Lakers edged the Celtics 83-79 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to win their 16th franchise championship. The Lakers became the first repeat champion since they won three straight from 2000-02. Kobe Bryant struggled from the field for much of the game, especially from 3-point range, but caught fire when it mattered most — the fourth quarter. Bryant hit two free throws in the fourth to give the Lakers their first lead of the second half, then drilled a jumper on the next possession to make it 68-64 Lakers with 5:21 left in the game. The NBA Finals MVP finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds as he took home his fifth career title. The Celtics took a 40-34 lead into halftime during the sloppy game, but Los Angeles closed the gap and stormed out to the lead behind Bryant’s rebound effort and the strong inside presence from Pau Gasol , who tallied 19 points and 18 rebounds. Boston was attempting to win an unprecedented 18th championship. This year’s NBA Finals earned the highest TV ratings for the finals since 2004.

Rasheed Wallace Starting Game 7 for Celtics

Filed under: Celtics , Lakers , NBA Injuries , NBA Playoffs , NBA Finals LOS ANGELES — To nobody’s surprise, Doc Rivers is going with the veteran. The Boston coach confirmed before Thursday night’s Game 7 of the NBA Finals that he will start Rasheed Wallace at center against the Lakers in place of injured Kendrick Perkins . Wallace, a 15-year veteran, is the only player on either team to have played in a Game 7 of the NBA Finals, taking the floor for Detroit in a 2005 loss at San Antonio. “He’s old,” Rivers said of Wallace, 35. “I figured I’d play the oldest guys. I just think it’s a good combination with Kevin because of the size, with (Lakers center Andrew) Bynum ‘s size. I just think it’s a better fit for us.” The 6-foot-11, 230-pound Wallace will take over for the 6-10, 265-pound Perkins, who was lost in Game 6 with torn ligaments in his right knee. The other candidate to go against the 7-foot, 285-pound Bynum was 6-9, 289-pound Glen Davis , who will come off the bench in the big game at the Staples Center.
