1 in 10 Americans Own an e-Reader, and Read More Than The Rest of Us

Photo via Johan Larsson According to a new poll by Harris Interactive , Americans are latching on to e-readers in a big way. Nearly 1 in 10 of us (8%) use an e-reader device, and 12% of us plan to buy one in the next year. Considering how new e-readers are, that’s a significant number. But we come back to the ever-present question: Is this better for the environment than buying printed books?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

EPA Nixes External Adaptors from Energy Star Program

Photo via alistairas The Environmental Protection Agency decided that external power adapters aren’t eligible for inclusion in the Energy Star Label program, the reason being that they’re doing too good a job meeting qualifications anyway. Since most external adapters meet qualifications, there’s no point in wasting resources putting them through the labeling process. Humidifier and Air Purifier Powered by… Your Cat?

Robotic Plants Serve an Altruistic Purpose (Video)

Photo via Designboom Japanese artist Akira Nakayasu’s specialty is robotic plants. He creates things like sunflowers that react to human movement, making the flower seem to communicate with the people around it. His latest work is called “Plant,” an interactive piece that was inspired by grass blowing in the wind. With 169 artificial leaves that react independently to the presence of a human’s body, such as a hand waving over it, the unarguably interesting and relatively cool piece begs the question, “What’s the point?”… Read the full story on TreeHugger

It’s a tool that we really love around here because it can be used for so many green purposes. Already becoming widely useful for navigating p… Read the full story on TreeHugger

High-Tech Trash Bins Rat Out Residents Who Refuse to Recycle

Photo via orphanjones Cleveland residents are about to get an extra incentive to recycle — if they don’t, their trash bins will tattletale and they’ll be slapped with a $100 fine. The city is starting a new program that features trash bins embedded with microchips. If the recycling cart isn’t rolled out to the curb on a regular basis, trash collectors are prompted to go through the bins to make sure recyclables are being sorted correctly. If they’re not, the residents will pay for their laziness. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
