Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Pimp Out The Golden Globes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are not only co-hosts of the 70th Golden Globes this year, they’re also competitors. Both were nominated for Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy, with Fey duking it out with her counterpart for 30 Rock , while Poehler is up for the award for Park and Recreation . [ Related: Golden Globes Unveil 70th Edition Nominees ] But while the co-hosts won’t conceivably know the results until the envelope opens at the ceremony on January 13th, the pair are busy working together in the lead-up to the big event, and no doubt re-calling those good ol’ Saturday Night Live days. In this promo for the Globes, the duo are dressed in matching golden sparkly dresses and they both dish out cheesy Brit(ish) accents (until they don’t). Maybe they’re commenting on the resurgence of British-speak in Hollywood films reminiscent of the very early “golden days” of Hollywood? Who knows, but here’s a funny look at what may bode well for the Globes telecast after the New Year. [ Source: Huffington Post ]

Benedict Cumberbatch Teases ‘Star Trek 2’ Role

Talk that Cumberbatch is playing the new ‘Trek’ villain is ‘just supposition,’ the actor said at the 2012 Golden Globes. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Benedict Cumberbatch Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Ever since British actor Benedict Cumberbatch was announced as part of the cast of “Star Trek 2,” fans have been arguing back and forth over who the “Sherlock” star might be playing in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel. Lots of speculation has centered on whether he’d be playing a familiar villain in “Trek” lore — like Khan Noonien Singh, the most popular theory to date — or an entirely new bad guy. But perhaps we’ve all been barking up the wrong tree (or beaming aboard the wrong ship, as it were) as Cumberbatch teased to MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet Sunday night (January 15) that he might not be playing an antagonist at all. “I don’t think we do know that, actually,” Cumberbatch told MTV’s Josh Horowitz when asked if his “Star Trek” role is a villainous one. “That’s just supposition. And that’s all I’m going to say about it.” Perhaps some clues can be found in the fact that Cumberbatch has been preparing for his role by consulting friends and family members better versed in the “Star Trek” universe than he is. “I started [becoming a ‘Star Trek’ fan] slowly, but quite genuinely, when he rebooted it with this last film,” the actor said of his own “Trek” familiarity. “I have lots of friends and family, all sorts of people who’ve loved all of the series and all of the films. I’ve been introduced to it through them and now I’m going back to them and asking them questions so I can get up to speed with true Trekkies.” Though the character’s identity remains concealed, whomever Cumberbatch is playing requires no small amount of physical preparation. The actor said he’s been “working out nonstop,” indicating that his part in “Star Trek 2” is a very physical one. But even if preparation has been somewhat grueling, the actor insists that he’s having a blast getting ready for the role. “[Abrams has] great ideas. It’s been great fun to prep,” Cumberbatch said. “I start [shooting] next week, which is really exciting, and I can’t say any more than that.” Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Golden Globes winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet ! ‘Bridesmaids’ Director ‘Pulling For’ Melissa McCarthy Oscar

‘I think we got a good shot with Melissa [for Best Supporting Actress],’ Paul Feig tells us on the Golden Globes red carpet. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Joshua Horowitz Paul Feig Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images “Bridesmaids” might have walked away from the Golden Globes empty-handed , but the raunchy comedy is still considered a dark horse for the upcoming Oscar race. Nominees won’t be announced until January 24, and many experts are guessing that the film might sneak into the pool of Best Picture nominees. Director Paul Feig is similarly optimistic. MTV News caught up with him on the red carpet before the Globes where he chatted about his predictions for “Bridesmaids'” Oscar chances. “I’m really pulling for Melissa [McCarthy]. I think we got a good shot with Melissa [for Best Supporting Actress],” he said. “I think the girls have a good shot for the screenplay.” But what about their Best Picture odds? Feig isn’t holding his breath. “Look, nothing would make me happier,” he said. “I think that’s a real tough one because the way the voting for the Academy is set up for Best Pictures this year is tough. We have to get a lot of, like, ‘best movie of the year’ votes, which, like, we’re good, but we’re not the best movie of the year. I’d like to say we were, but what an ass I would sound like if I did say that.” That lends itself to a different argument that says the Academy Awards should follow the Globes’ model and separate the drama and comedy categories. As a comedic director and producer for over a decade, Feig said he sees the upside in that split. His argument is that it’s easier to create a showy drama that appeals to critics than a showy comedy that does the same. In his experience, showy comedies typically distance the intended audience, though that isn’t always the case. “I thought ‘The Hangover’ was very showy in that way, filmmaking-wise. But it’s hard because most comedy needs to be very relatable. Like, if I were to do ‘Bridesmaids’ kind of very stylistic, I think I would alienate the audience, you know,” he said. “As a filmmaker, my theory is always, ‘Take the backseat. Don’t show off. Let the girls be the focus.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Bridesmaids.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Ricky Gervais’ Five Best Golden Globes Jokes

He might have been a bit tamer than last year’s hosting gig, but he still had quite a few zingers. By Ryan J. Downey Ricky Gervais at the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: Getty Images In several interviews, Ricky Gervais made it clear that he felt a responsibility to skewer the rich and famous assembled at the Golden Globes this year. It’s not about the people in the room; it’s about the people watching at home. We are in a deep economic crisis, after all. Let’s get this in perspective: They’re the wealthiest, most privileged people in the world,” he told Esquire in a recent interview. Many of the promotional spots leading up to his return as host took this angle, as well. This year, the co-creator and co-star of the often fame-and-fortune skewering “Life’s Too Short,” “The Ricky Gervais Show,” “An Idiot Abroad,” “Extras” and both the U.K. and U.S. version of “The Office” saved most of his acerbic venom for several folks who weren’t in attendance: Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy. And a few of the jokes directed at larger targets seemed to have compliments thinly hidden in their premises: Clooney is handsome, Firth is well-loved, Portman puts family first. Hardly biting. But in fairness, Gervais promising to up the ante from his stellar performance last year is a bit like Paul McCartney promising to outdo The White Album. Some things in art and life come down to time, place, circumstance and the right convergence of events (Ricky would probably be upset if we suggested divine intervention). And while another comedic actor may have had the edgiest joke of the night (“Hello, I’m Seth Rogen, and I am currently trying to conceal a massive erection,” said while standing about a foot away from Kate Beckinsale), Gervais certainly still generated several laughs. “It’s so good having a job where you can get drunk and say what you want. And they pay you,” he said at one point during the telecast. In case you missed ’em, here are the five funniest things the massively talented Englishman had to say: 5. “Tonight you get Britain’s biggest comedian, hosting the world’s second biggest awards show on America’s third biggest network. Sorry, is it? Fourth. It’s fourth. For any of you who don’t know, the Golden Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem. The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing’s been proved.” 4. “What’s with all the divorces? What’s going on? Arnold and Maria, J.Lo and Marc Anthony, Ashton and Demi. Kim Kardashian and some guy no one will remember. He wasn’t around long. Seventy-two days. A marriage that lasted 72 days. I’ve sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches.” 3. “Who needs the Oscars? Not me. And not Eddie Murphy. He walked out on them, and good for him. But when the man who said yes to ‘Norbit’ says no to you, you know you’re in trouble. I love Eddie Murphy. He loves dressing up, doesn’t he? Versatile. He’s versatile. No, he is. Bit of trivia for you: Eddie Murphy and Adam Sandler between them played all the parts in the movie ‘The Help.’ Isn’t that brilliant. They were brilliant. I can’t believe they’re not here. Or maybe they are. They’re masters of disguise.” 2. “Justin Bieber nearly had to take a paternity test. What a waste of a test that would have been. No, he’s not the father. The only way that he could impregnate a girl was if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart’s old turkey basters.” 1. To Johnny Depp: “I want to ask you a question. And be honest. Are you on recreational drugs? I’m joking, that’s not the question. And we all know the answer. Have you seen ‘The Tourist’ yet?” Stick with MTV News for the 2012 Golden Globes winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet ! Golden Globes 2012: Best And Worst Moments

Peter Dinklage’s acceptance speech and Seth Rogen’s shocking one-liner rank among best Globes moments — but there were FAILs too. By Josh Wigler Peter Dinklage at the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: Getty Images In spite of some predictable results (“The Artist” wins everything! Again!) and a far tamer-than-expected performance from returning host Ricky Gervais , there were some moments at the 2012 Golden Globes worth standing up and saluting — from victories for a handful of small-screen underdogs to appearances from real-life dogs. Of course, there were other moments we would just as soon forget. Read on for our list of the best and worst of Sunday’s (January 15) Globes! Best Penis Joke: Seth Rogen On a night peppered with lewd, “members only” humor that included Madonna trying to steal a smooch from Gervais and George Clooney offering “Shame” star Michael Fassbender a few golf tips, it was “50/50” comedian Seth Rogen who came out swinging with the most shocking one-liner of the night. Rogen called attention to his “concealed erection” while standing next to Kate Beckinsale, and it’s a good thing she wasn’t in character as “Underworld” badass Selene, or else that joke may have ended very, very differently. Best Google Alert: Peter Dinklage This year’s Globes gave Dinklage yet another deserved win for playing Tyrion Lannister on “Game of Thrones.” But the actor didn’t simply accept his award, he sent every viewer with access to the Internet straight to the Web with instructions to Google Martin Henderson. No, he did not mean the “Torque” actor. Instead, Dinklage successfully called attention to a dwarf-tossing victim in England, using the Globes as a platform to highlight a greater issue. Least Prepared Winner: Meryl Streep When you hold the record for receiving the most Golden Globe nominations of any actor in history, one would think you’d be a bit more prepared when an award actually came your way. During Sunday night’s broadcast, however, Streep was genuinely stunned by her Best Actress victory for “The Iron Lady.” In a discombobulated acceptance speech, she thanked actors who weren’t even nominated for awards and dragged on for way too frakkin’ long. Meryl, we love you, but please: a little preparation goes a long way. At this point in your storied career, there’s really no excuse for getting played off the stage. Biggest Mistake: The “Boss” Wins Over Walter White No disrespect intended to the former Frasier Crane, who has ruled the small screen in many incarnations over the years. Grammar’s work on Starz’s freshman drama “Boss” is worth acclaim, no doubt, but is it worth more than “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston’s continued excellence as chemistry teacher-turned-meth cook? Not a chance. Four years into the AMC thriller and Cranston continues to top himself with every episode in his role as Walter White. He is the danger, and there’s no question that he should have won the Globe this year. Spot-On Award: “Homeland” On the flip side, voters got it right by awarding Showtime’s “Homeland” with two major awards: one for Best Drama and one to Claire Danes for Best Actress in a TV Drama. Danes’ mentally unstable counterterrorism agent Carrie Mathison is one of the most original and moving lead characters to hit the small screen in recent years, and the actress’ victory in this category is more than deserved. Likewise, the series itself was one of the brightest TV offerings of 2011, absolutely required viewing for anyone fascinated by the world of espionage and the War on Terror. Best Dog: Uggie, “The Artist” In a year dominated by awesome movie dogs, Jack from “The Artist” — played by Uggie the Jack Russell terrier — was the only one respectful enough to actually show up to the Golden Globes. By default, Uggie wins our inaugural Best Dog award. To the other canines: shame on you for staying home. Ricky Gervais At Golden Globes: Who Will He Chide?

‘I don’t care if you’re offended,’ show’s host says about his jokes. By Kara Warner Ricky Gervais Photo: Getty Images One of the many joys in watching live awards shows is the anything-can-happen factor. We can predict winners and losers and attendees and such, but we really never know for sure who will say what and when, or whether there will be any technical difficulties, wardrobe malfunctions or other unexpected excitement. With regard to the Golden Globes — which typically seem to allow room for more surprises than say the Oscars or the Grammys — the most unpredictable and interesting factor going into the show this year is host Ricky Gervais . Who will he poke fun at this year? Our hope: everyone. We love our celebrities and all the movies and television shows they make, but so much of the Hollywood machine is so exaggerated and ridiculous, it’s great to watch someone who is as intelligent as he is funny take the industry to task for its most-outlandish offenses. Gervais has said that just like last year, he will be pulling no punches tonight. “[Am I] nervous? No. What’s the worst that can happen?” he told reporters at a Television Critics Association press event for his HBO show “Life’s Too Short.” “I end my career once a week if you read the press. I do things that could end my career now. That’s my extreme sport. If you get fun with it, which I do and I demand, and you get your own way and are happy with what you’ve done, then nothing can happen to you. You’re bulletproof. Everything I say, I can justify it, I can stand by it, as I do every joke I did last year, then I don’t care. I don’t care if you’re offended.” This is exactly what we want to hear from Gervais. He doesn’t single out anyone maliciously; he does it all in the name of entertainment. “I’m going to do a monologue about what happened during the year, and then introduce six or seven people as I did last year. I’ve got nothing against any of those people in the room,” he said. “I’ve worked with many of them. I like many of them. I admire them. They’re just gags. I’m not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings or give them a bad night or undermine the moral fabric of America. I’m a comedian.” Given what we know about Gervais and those we expect to be present at the Globes, here are a few things we think he might address: Movies : A controversial statement of some kind about “The Help,” something cheeky about “The Artist” having no color or sound, poking fun at the heavy hitters in the Best Actor category, the old guard (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio) vs. the young upstarts and their multiple films nominated (Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender). We hope he loved “Bridesmaids” as much as we did and gives it extra attention. TV : The new “Two and a Half Men,” Charlie Sheen’s new career, Steve Carell leaving “The Office,” the nudity and sex featured in HBO shows, the oddities of “American Horror Story,” lack of enthusiasm for “Glee.” We have no idea what shows Gervais might love; maybe “30 Rock” and “Breaking Bad”? Here’s hoping we find out via his quips. Other pop-culture topics : Kim Kardashian’s marriage is long over, but Gervais likely has a fresh take; the royal wedding; British things vs. American things; the presidential election; Beyonc
